VII.—岩の中 Among the Rocks
I.
茶色く古びた大地の巨大な笑顔よ、
この秋の朝！その骨をどう晒し置いて
日光浴としたか、膝と足を突き出し
波打ち過ぎるは浮かれ騒ぎに
暫し耳傾けること、山積みの石の上
海雲雀の白い胸が囀ること甘やかに。
OH, good gigantic smile o’ the brown old earth,
This autumn morning! How he sets his bones
To bask i’ the sun, and thrusts out knees and feet
For the ripple to run over in its mirth;
Listening the while, where on the heap of stones
The white breast of the sea-lark twitters sweet.
II.
それは教訓、単純で、昔からの、真実の。
これは人生の試練、歳経た大地も微笑み知る通り。
愛するに足るものだけを愛したというのなら、
愛は利益で、好都合だったのでしょうけれど、
ダメな所は苦しんででも直さないと！
その身を大地に投げ出し、高みを目指して行きましょう。
That is the doctrine, simple, ancient, true;
Such is life’s trial, as old earth smiles and knows.
If you loved only what were worth your love,
Love were clear gain, and wholly well for you
Make the low nature better by your throes!
Give earth yourself, go up for gain above.
Among the Rocks：「いしのなかにいる」と訳せなくもない。
sea-lark:タヒバリ rock pipit と呼ばれるスズメ目セキレイ科の小鳥。欧州の海岸で繁殖し、日本には来ず、見た目はヒバリというよりスズメに似る。ブローニングは今で言うバードウォッチャーだったのか、作中にしばしば小鳥の描写を持ち込んでいる。
the low nature:人間の性質を高次と低次に分け、二項対立として論ずることが古くから行われてきたが、ここではそれほど哲学的な重み付けはされていない。
