Stick and Meditation

I once heard an instructive story about conducting meditation in some theological schools (not specified in which). Allegedly, a mentor walked between the rows of meditating students and beat those who were distracted with a bamboo stick.

This story has been telling, as it seemed to me, with some note of understanding and approval.

Imagine my surprise when I found out how meditations really go with a mentor.

Everything seems to be the right story. But there is one detail that changes everything.

The mentor beats not the student who, in his opinion, is distracted, but the one who raises his hand, indicating that he is distracted.

Well then, the manual may contain inaccurate data, working on which I am more diligently seeking the truth.
