Cracks
Chapter 6
Just as Kaito started worrying about being found out, Cinna stormed into the room, furious.
"How could you do this, Chase? I can't believe you. I thought you were better than this." She helped Kaito to his feet. "I'm sorry. You must be starving." She waited for a response. He said nothing, just glanced toward Chase, hoping he'd step in. He didn't.
"Are you not able to speak?" Cinna asked, worried — she couldn't believe someone would be treated this harshly under the circumstances.
"He's not—" Chase started, as the other men quietly slipped out of the room. This was about to go nuclear.
"I only asked him to keep quiet. For our safety."
"What do you mean?" she snapped. "Look at him, he can barely stand." She held him upright, his arm slung across her shoulder.
"His background's unknown. We don't know where he came from. Who knows what he might do."
"So what — you starve him?"
"If he leaves, he could tell people about this place. People with bad intentions."
"We all know what we've been through these past few weeks. I'm just trying to look out for everyone. All I wanted was to question him, see what he's up to, and—"
"And what?" she cut in, locking eyes with him.
She stormed out into the hallway. Kaito limped after her, his body finally catching up with him from the blast the day before, though it didn't stop him from playing the harmless pawn. It was an advantage, given everything.
Worried, Cinna took him to the medical room, got him cleaned up, and found him a fresh set of clothes. "Sorry, this is all we've got right now," she said. Kaito gave a small bow of gratitude. She smiled and stepped out to let him change.
"Are you still mad at me?" Chase asked her afterward. She said nothing, just a flicker of anger crossing her face. Finally she spoke, asking him to let Kaito talk. He thought it over before agreeing — right as Kaito stepped through the door into the hallway.
Jake, one of Chase's men, rushed in. "Chase — we've got an emergency."
"What is it?" Chase asked, tension creeping into his voice.
"It's the dead. Like the ones before. We found one three blocks down the street. It's not looking good, man." Jake rubbed his head, and it was clear this wasn't something to shrug off.
Torn, Chase stormed out with his men, while Kaito and the rest of the residents stayed inside, bracing for whatever came next.
