煙突掃除夫。THE CHIMNEY-SWEEPER.
僕がごく幼くして母を亡くした時、
父は僕を売った、まだ僕は舌足らずに
泣き声上げるが精一杯、「…すぁん、すあん、…す…す！」
煤の中に眠る僕、それで貴方の煙突掃くはススっと。
WHEN my mother died I was very young,
And my father sold me while yet my tongue
Could scarcely cry "'weep, 'weep, 'weep, 'weep!"
So your chimneys I sweep and in soot I sleep.
そこに居るちびトム・デイカー、頭埋めて泣いていた、
羊の毛みたく、天然パーマを剃り落とされた。
「しーっ！トムよ気を落とすな、いがぐり坊主も
おまえの白髪、煤も隠せずと知らしむ機会よ。」
There's little Tom Dacre, who cried when his head,
That curl'd like lamb's back, was shaved: so I said:
"Hush, Tom, never mind it, for when your head's bare
You know that the soot cannot spoil your white hair."
そしたら黙った。ちょうどその夜、
トムも眠った、まさにその頃、
掃除夫幾千、ディックにジョー、ネッドにジャック、
みな閉じ込められた黒い棺桶。
And so he was quiet; and that very night,
As Tom was a-sleeping, he had such a sight;
That thousands of sweepers, Dick, Joe, Ned, and Jack,
Were all of them lock'd up in coffins of black.
御成りの使徒持つピカピカの鍵、
棺桶開けて、みな揃って解放し。
緑の野に散り、笑って走って、
川で水浴び、日を浴びて。
And by came an angel who had a bright key,
And he open'd the coffins and set them all free;
Then down a green plain, leaping, laughing they run,
And wash in a river and shine in the sun.
裸は白く、荷物は後ろに、
雲に乗り、身を風に任せ。
天使は告げる、いい子にしてれば、
神が父となる、喜び尽きせじ。
Then naked and white, all their bags left behind,
They rise upon clouds and sport in the wind;
And the angel told Tom if he'd be a good boy,
He'd have God for his father and never want joy.
そして東雲、トム目覚め。僕等も起きて、
荷物を取って、仕事に行くべくブラシを掛けて。
その朝が寒かろうと、トムは幸せ、暖かく。
だったら皆も、義務を果たそう、何も恐れず。
And so Tom awoke; and we rose in the dark,
And got with our bags and our brushes to work.
Though the morning was cold Tom was happy and warm:
So if all do their duty they need not fear harm.
煙突というものがイギリスに登場した1200年頃は、サンタクロースが入って来れるほど大きかった。それが産業革命の頃には効率を求めて細く複雑になり、子供でないと入れなくなり、煙突掃除の親方が見習いの子供を集めるようになり、児童虐待の場と化した。1803年には機械式掃除機が発明されたのに、イギリスで煙突掃除人見習いが禁止されたのは1875年になる。イギリスの大人たちは、子供の仕事をなくすより、子供に仕事を与える方を好んだのであった。
