経験の歌 Songs of Experience

愛の庭。THE GARDEN OF LOVE.

私は行った、「愛」の庭へと、

今まで見たことのないものを見た。

芝生の真ん中、「礼拝堂」

よく遊んでいた場所だった。

I WENT to the garden of Love,

And saw what I never had seen:

A Chapel was built in the midst,

Where I used to play on the green.

この礼拝堂の門は閉ざされて、

そして「立入禁止」と扉に書く。

されば向かうは、かの愛の庭へ

それはたくさんの甘い花が咲く。

And the gates of this chapel were shut,

And "Thou shalt not" writ over the door;

So I turn'd to the garden of Love

That so many sweet flowers bore;

そして見た、そこが墓で埋め尽くされて、

花のあるべき場所に墓石があるのを。

黒いガウンを着た僧侶たちが巡回して、

茨で縛っていた、わが喜びと願いを。

And I saw it was filled with graves

And tombstones where flowers should be:

And priests in black gowns were walking their rounds,

And binding with briars my joys and desires.
