聖木曜日 Holy Thursday
Songs of Innocence （未訳）の Holy Thursday と対を成す。聖木曜日とは、復活祭直前の木曜日にあたり、『最後の晩餐』を記念する日。その席でイエスが弟子たちの足を洗ったという記述が福音書に見られるため、「洗足木曜日」ともいい、聖公会では洗足式が行われる。
これが聖なる事に見えようか
富み栄える国にありながら、
苦難に陥る幼子たちは
冷たく法外な手で養われ？
Is this a holy thing to see
In a rich and fruitful land,
Babes reduced to misery
Fed with cold and usurous hand?
歌を叫ぶあれは震えているのか？
あれが愉しみの歌で有り得るか？
あまりに多くの幼子貧しく？
これでは貧困の国としか！
Is that trembling cry a song?
Can it be a song of joy?
And so many children poor?
It is a land of poverty!
その上太陽輝くことなく。
その地ときたら素寒貧。
その道程は棘だらけ。
そこには冬が永遠に。
And their sun does never shine.
And their fields are bleak & bare.
And their ways are fill'd with thorns.
It is eternal winter there.
太陽輝く地はいずこ、
雨の注ぐ地はいずこ。
幼子飢えることもなく、
心曇らす貧困もない処は。
For where’er the sun does shine,
And where’er the rain does fall:
Babe can never hunger there,
Nor poverty the mind appall.
usurous：「高利貸し的な」usurious の誤記？
thorns：「いばら」とすると十字架上のイエスなイメージに近づくのだが、他にそういう描写は見当たらない。
