Chapter 9 wastelanders guild

After a full day we made it to our destination. What Josephine saw was amazing in her eyes.

The ruins of a once great modern marvel. A city once named orlando, now just called the rust yard.

The buildings were mostly rubble. A few buildings had survived but were horribly damaged.

But there were signs of civilization. Walls were put up and makeshift houses were made. The city had was in the process of rebuilding.

My gosh. What a mess.

Ain't that the truth. We moved here only 5 years ago, and we're still trying to fix the place up.

Moved here?

The guild. It was sent here from Japan.

What is the wastelanders guild anyway?

The guild was created by the Japanese government after the war with China nearly destroyed the country.

When the Second American civil war started, America pulled all troops on foreign soil back home to deal with it. Leaving Japan with The USA nuclear umbrella to protect us.

A few months after the civil war started, china declared war on us and it lasted for 20 years. We lost 70% of our population but thanks to some new allies ad many brave soldiers who gave their lives, we managed to win.

But Japan was in ruins. The economy was destroyed, the debt soared to new heights. It seemed like we were done for.

As if that wasn't bad enough at the negotiations for peace all the other nations that fought with us wanted to take parts of chinese territory for themselves along with enormous sums of money.

Nobody could agree and it seemed like another war was about to break out. But one politician had an idea.

America was already nuked for 20 years now and nobody goes there anymore. This politician named shinichi toshi realized that there was lots of old american technology that could be scavenged as well as whatever natural resources remained.

So he suggested that Japan stay out of the brewing conflict in China and simply take money instead. He also managed to convince the other nations to stay out of America, making them believe that it wasn't worth anything.

They all agreed, wanting us to stay out of the new war for chinese territory. After that Shinichi created the wastelanders guild.

Many otaku, wanting to live a life of adventure, suddenly left their homes and signed up in droves.

And the plan worked. Resources were found, technology that was thought lost was recovered, reverse engineered and reintroduced into society.

The guild saved our country and made our economy great again. It was like the bubble era but this time the economy wasn't going to crash.

But of course there are still people alive in America. They are trying to rebuild and the Japanese government decided to annex the country and make it our territory.

Many of the American people now live under our rules.

Wow, sounds like Japan is doing pretty well for itself. The people here must be real grateful that you came along.

Don't be mistaken, we didn't come here to save America. Only scavenge it. The wastelanders guild's primary mission is to find resources and look for lost technology. Saving lives isn't part of the job.

Though it's not forbidden either so it's up to guild members whether they want to be heroes.

I see. Kinda a bit selfish don't you think.

Hey, We're not selfish. We're helping Japan. America gets to enjoy the privilege of being part of us. And they also get rule of law.

Most are just grateful to not have to struggle to survive.

Sure they do, she says sarcastically.

We are here.

Before us were a big wall with beautiful Japanese style gates. It was so big nobody could see over the wall.

The gates were guarded by samurai, complete with swords.

I though samurai died out a long time ago.

I'm surpirsed you know that. Most people here don't have an education. How is it you know about something that happened 200 years ago.

Oh dang, think fast.

I found some old books. It's a hobby of mine, Josephine stutters.

Oh, well it's impressive nonetheless.

Saved.

Well they came back, though not the way you'd expect.

Upon closer inspection it seemed liked the samurai were robotic.

What the heck. They're made of metal.

They aren't machines. Not entirely. Cybernetic technology has come through a lot since the war. One good thing about war is that it advances technology years ahead of it's time.

Cybernetics were funded to make better soldiers in order to fight the Chinese. And thanks to their new "parts" they cut down many Chinese troops.

What the heck are cyborgs?

Guess your not as educated as I thought.

Hey!

Cyborgs are people with machines surgically put in their body. Process is pretty painless but not cheap.

The world really has changed a lot. Back then all sort of crazy inventions were coming out of the industrial age I grew up in.

Now people have reached the point where they can modify their bodies.

Anyway, welcome to the wastelanders guild.
