手袋 The Glove 〜ロンサールに寄せて PETER RONSARD loquitur.〜
PETER RONSARD：ピエール・ド・ロンサール（Pierre de Ronsard, 1524 - 1585）プレイヤード派の筆頭とされるフランスの詩人。王太子フランソワ（ブルターニュ公フランソワ3世、1518 - 1536）の小姓を務めた。
本作は、この大先達に擬して作られている。
「ハイホー！」とある日吠えたフランソワ王、
「物事すべて遠ざかるほどに貴し！」
"Heigho!" yawned one day King Francis,
"Distance all value enhances!
「忙しく働く人が、お休み取るなら
たちまち有頂天にもなろう。」
"When a man's busy, why, leisure
"Strikes him as wonderful pleasure:
「それがお祈りばかり、お休みばかりとなれば？
ひたすら多忙を望むであろう。」
" 'Faith, and at leisure once is he?
"Straightway he wants to be busy.
「ここに我等は平和を獲たり。我ながら驚かされたは
戦争こそ真の娯楽との考えに囚われてな。」
"Here we've got peace; and aghast I'm
"Caught thinking war the true pastime.
「これで韻律は合っておるかの？
話し明かしたまえ、ペテロ師よ！」
"Is there a reason in metre?
"Give us your speech, master Peter!"
死すべき者があえてそう言うことなら、
オウィディウスにかけて迷うこと無し、

「主上よ」と答え「喜びは叢雲に証され。
「人とは卑劣極まりないイクシオンにて」---
之に王様、思わず高々口笛吹かれ。
「……ハイホー ……見に行くか我等のライオンを！」

"---Heigho---go look at our lions!"
悼ましくとも思い出す切欠にはなろう
フランソワ王と親しく話したことがあるなら。
Such are the sorrowful chances
If you talk fine to King Francis.

And so, to the courtyard proceeding,

中でもデ・ロルジュ卿の突進すること
伴うは女爵、最も崇拝すると公言した人を。
And Sir De Lorge pressed 'mid the foremost
With the dame he professed to adore most.

彼女、次いで恐るべき奈落の側。
Oh, what a face! One by fits eyed
Her, and the horrible pitside;
濠に囲まれた檻に向け
導かれたのは、誰も目を向けまいとした方へ、
For the penfold surrounded a hollow
Which led where the eye scarce dared follow,
棚上げされたは人目につかない部屋に
そこに巨大なライオン『青ひげ』蹲り。
And shelved to the chamber secluded
Where Bluebeard, the great lion, brooded.
王は護りのアラブ人の用を解く
これ艶々とスカラベのように黒く、
The King bailed his keeper, an Arab
As glossy and black as a scarab,
そして少々からかい弄るや
巣穴を這い出る古い怪物。
And bade him make sport and at once stir
Up and out of his den the old monster.
金網の穴を並んで開ける

They opened a hole in the wire-work
Across it, and dropped there a firework,

The tail in the air stiff and straining,
The wide eyes, nor waxing nor waning,
障壁の向こうから、区切るところは
獅子の巣から、取り巻く私たちを
As over the barrier which bounded
His platform, and us who surrounded
皆そこまで詰め掛け、押し合い圧し合い
人を押し退けてでも良い場所を取り。
The barrier, they reached and they rested
On space that might stand him in best stead:
誰とは言わず、こんな見世物またとなし、
ガタガタボウボウ言う大噴火並み、
For who knew, he thought, what the amazement,
The eruption of clatter and blaze meant,
もしも、この不思議な瞬間に、
捌け口もなく、 電と雷の只中、
And if, in this minute of wonder,
No outlet, 'mid lightning and thunder,
長々と横たえたなら、手枷足枷の悉く粉砕されん、
彼の獅子の遂には来らん？
Lay broad, and, his shackles all shivered,
The lion at last was delivered?

その日暮らしの黒人女を待ち伏せる、
ゆえ獅子から入口出口が防がれる。
To waylay the date-gathering negress:
So guarded he entrance or egress.
「おいでなすった」王は曰く、「誓ってもよいか、
「初心でもなし、何処ぞで手柄分かち合った仲ではないか、
"How he stands!" quoth the King: "we may well swear,
"No novice, we've won our spurs elsewhere

"And so can afford the confession,

この宣告発せられたそのとき
獅子の柵越え、手袋の1つはためき、
The sentence no sooner was uttered,
Than over the rails a glove flattered,
かの獅子のごく近く、ふわり着地し落ち着いた
かの貴婦人だった、ふざけてそれを投げたのは
Fell close to the lion, and rested:
The dame 'twas, who flung it and jested
生命を賭けろと、何ヶ月にも渡り口説いてきた
デ・ロルジュに。言い募ったその男と来たら
With life so, De Lorge had been wooing
For months past; he sat there pursuing
服装からしてその体重が見て取れる
黄金のような名演説と釣り合いを取る。
His suit, weighing out with nonchalance
Fine speeches like gold from a balance.
吹け喇叭、騎士のウダウダ迷うことなし！
デ・ロルジュの見事柵越え、ひとっ飛び。
Sound the trumpet, no true knight's a tarrier!
De Lorge made one leap at the barrier,
手袋までまっすぐ歩いた、…傍らに獅子
動くことなく、遠目に目を据えたままに
Walked straight to the glove,---while the lion
Ne'er moved, kept his far-reaching eye on
椰子の木に縁取られた砂漠の春のサファイア、
麝香の油を塗った肌はカフィルの人、……
The palm-tree-edged desert-spring's sapphire,
And the musky oiled skin of the Kaffir,---
物を手に取り、物音立てずに後退り、
かの女座して傍観するに跳ね戻り、
Picked it up, and as calmly retreated,
Leaped back where the lady was seated,
持ち主の目の前いっぱいに迫るや
手袋投げつけ。…
And full in the face of its owner
Flung the glove.…

「ならば朕こそ！」王は叫んだ、「虚栄心に過ぎなかったと、
「愛ではない、帰せらるべきは慈悲だったと！」
…"Your heart's queen, you dethrone her?
"So should I!"---cried the King---"'twas mere vanity,
"Not love, set that task to humanity!"
紳士淑女は皆目を逸らす、恐れ賢み
羊の皮を被った狼の正体から。
Lords and ladies alike turned with loathing
From such a proved wolf in sheep's clothing.
違うだろう。女の顔色窺えば
眉ひとつ動かさない自制の半ば
Not so, I; for I caught an expression
In her brow's undisturbed self-possession
宮廷の嘲笑とざわめきの中に、……
辛いテストが終わったように
Amid the Court's scoffing and merriment,---
As if from no pleasing experiment
立ち上がる、さして痛みも気にせずに
こんな目に遭ったのも止むを得ずと、……
She rose, yet of pain not much heedful
So long as the process was needful,---
まるでるつぼで試してきたよう、
「黄金の演説」をも還元できよう、
As if she had tried in a crucible,
To what "speeches like gold" were reducible,
して見出すは最高級の銅という次第、
煙草の煙に顔を隠すも無理はない。
And, finding the finest prove copper,
Felt the smoke in her face was but proper;
信じてい「なかった」ものを理解するには、
捨てるところも無かった、灰も埃も。
To know what she had _not_ to trust to,
Was worth all the ashes and dust too.
野次と笑い声浴びつつ、女は出ていき。
クレマン・マロは硬直、私はついて行き。
She went out 'mid hooting and laughter;
Clement Marot stayed; I followed after,
謹んで尋ねた、どういうつもりであったのかと。
もしやその暴走行為を思い出したくなかったと？
And asked, as a grace, what it all meant?
If she wished not the rash deed's recalment?
「私は」……かくて話しかけた……「詩人である以上。
「解っているとも、…人間の本性を！」
"For I"---so I spoke---"am a poet:
"Human nature,---behoves that I know it!"
女曰く「語れば長くなりましょう。
言葉だけで、あの行いを解き明かそうとは。
She told me, "Too long had I heard
"Of the deed proved alone by the word:
「愛をかけて……デ・ロルジュがあえてしないこと！
侮蔑を以て……デ・ロルジュと比べられること！
"For my love---what De Lorge would not dare!
"With my scorn---what De Lorge could compare!
「尽きることない死の表象

"And the endless descriptions of death
"He would brave when my lip formed a breath,

「落とし罠掘り、砂上に仕掛け、

「王からも宮廷からもお褒めどころか、

「だから、やり方としては賢明でなかったかしら
「『私の為に死んで』という試練を課すのは
"So, wiser I judged it to make
"One trial what `death for my sake'
「実の所は、まだ勢いがありましたから、
「やがて時が定めるまで待つくらいなら
"Really meant, while the power was yet mine,
"Than to wait until time should define
「あの言い方の意味は、それほど単純には、
ただ『死ね』という意味に取る私ほどには。」
"Such a phrase not so simply as I,

「手袋の打撃などたかが知れているわ。
「まだ頬に腫れた跡があるかしら？
"The blow a glove gives is but weak:
"Does the mark yet discolour my cheek?
「しかし、心が傷つけられるくらいなら、
「頬の痛みなど直ぐ治まるもの、解るかしら？」
"But when the heart suffers a blow,
"Will the pain pass so soon, do you know?"
思わず見つめた、辺りを払って女が去っていく所を
目に入ったのは、ある若者がついて行こうとする所を
I looked, as away she was sweeping,
And saw a youth eagerly keeping
どうしてもと戸口まで惹かれるようにして。
貴族たるものが、絞るべき体重を引き摺って。
As close as he dared to the doorway.
No doubt that a noble should more weigh
彼の気迫たるや、平民には有り得ないほど。
しかし猶、我らの野蛮人がネメアの人だったならと……
His life than befits a plebeian;
And yet, had our brute been Nemean---
(判ずるに、穏やかな熱意を持って為すものと
さる若者は歩み寄った、彼女に仕えようと)
(I judge by a certain calm fervour
The youth stepped with, forward to serve her)
……最悪の事態が齎された等とは思ってもみなかったか、
「友よ、くれる物なら貰っておこう！」とでも囁かれたか
---He'd have scarce thought you did him the worst turn
If you whispered "Friend, what you'd get, first earn!"
そして後に女が、恥を宮廷から
雪いだとき、彼等2人は結婚した、
And when, shortly after, she carried
Her shame from the Court, and they married,
よくあるささやかな幸せ、とはいえ
さがない宮廷の声には、敢えて言おう
To that marriage some happiness, maugre
The voice of the Court, I dared augur.
デ・ロルジュにしてみれば、競わせた女達に男達、
驚嘆と称賛にある者達、はたまた妬みに駆られた者達。
For De Lorge, he made women with men vie,
Those in wonder and praise, these in envy;
して結局、どんぐりの背比べの中で頭1つ分抜きん出た
彼が口説いて勝ち得たこと...彼女を何と呼んだやら？
And in short stood so plain a head taller
That he wooed and won ... how do you call her?
あのような騒ぎの後で、かの美人は
王の愛を受け、一週間ほど寵愛されたか。
The beauty, that rose in the sequel
To the King's love, who loved her a week well.
王が決して栄誉を授けようとはしないと
気付いたデ・ロルジュ(彼女を見ること剣呑と)、
And 'twas noticed he never would honour
De Lorge (who looked daggers upon her)
勤務の最中、足を伸ばせとの
簡単な指示が有り、連れてきたのは
With the easy commission of stretching
His legs in the service, and fetching
彼の妻、彷徨く者共、部屋から出てきて
その粗末な手袋ときたらいつも間違えられて
His wife, from her chamber, those straying
Sad gloves she was always mislaying,
小部屋に隠れた王様が話し込むというのに、……
この冒険はごくあっさりと済む、当然のように。
While the King took the closet to chat in,---
But of course this adventure came pat in.
王は決して話をしようとしなかった、
手袋1つ持ってきたのが、どうしてあんな栄誉を齎したのか、
And never the King told the story,
How bringing a glove brought such glory,
件の奥様は微笑んで……「夫はようよう根性据えた。
「今では彼が稼いでくるし、私としては文句なし。」
But the wife smiled---"His nerves are grown firmer:
"Mine he brings now and utters no murmur."
よく試すがいい、手遅れになる前に。
我がテオルボより垂れる訓にて。

With which moral I drop my theorbo.
Heigho：用例が見当たらない。ワーグナー『ワルキューレ』第2幕冒頭でブリュンヒルデが、第3幕冒頭でブリュンヒルデ以外のワルキューレが登場時に叫ぶ掛け声と同じもののようで、そちらは「ハイ-ヤ-ホウ！ハイヨー！ハイオオオ！」と聞こえる。
yawn：「大きく口を開ける」転じて「欠伸する」と訳されるが、そんなノンビリした空気ではない。
King Francis：フランス王フランソワ一世は、王太子フランソワの父。ロンサールに師事した王太子フランソワは、王位に就くことなく夭折した。本作では両者が混同されている。
この混同は、Leigh Hunt "The Glove and the Lions" の詩句そのままで、ブローニングは単純にこれを踏襲したものと思われる。何れも元ネタはブラントーム（abbe de Brantome，Pierre de Bourdeille，1540年ころ―1614年7月5日）『艶婦伝 les Dames galantes』から。
Naso:プーブリウス・オウィディウス・ナーソー（Publius Ovidius Naso, 紀元前43年 - 紀元後17年または18年）『変身物語』で知られるローマ帝国の詩人
Sir De Lorge：おそらく元ネタはモンゴメリ伯ガブリエル（ガブリエル・ド・ロルジュ、Gabriel de Lorges, Comte de Montgommery、1526年または1530年－1574年）。フランス国王アンリ2世との槍試合で、致命傷を与えてしまった。この1件はノストラダムスの『予言』例とされたが、こじつけを指摘されている。アンリ2世は、フランソワ王太子の弟。
our lions：フランソワ一世にしろ王太子フランソワにしろ、獅子を飼っていたという話はこのエピソード以外に見当たらない。
但しフランソワ一世は1515年、レオナルド・ダ・ヴィンチ製作になる絡繰り獅子を得た。これはミラノとの和議に当たった教皇レオ10世からの贈り物であった。絡繰り獅子は自動で王の前へ進み、ユリの花を咲かせたという。
Bluebeard：獅子の名を、ペローの童話『青髭公の城』から付けたのであろう。
scarab：フンコロガシの1種。球体を動かすため、エジプトでは太陽神として神聖視された。
make sport：sport は disport （気晴らし）に由来し、make sport は「冗談を言う」「戯れを為す」に当たる。
They opened a hole：最初から物の出し入れ用に、開口部が設けてあったのだろう。
Clement Marot：クレマン・マロ（Clément Marot, 1496年か1497年 - 1544年）作品の多くがシャンソンになっている。フランソワ1世の保護を受けた。ロンサールの先達に当たるが、その支持者はロンサールに反目した。
Illim Juda Leonem de Tribu：“Lion of Judah’s tribe”
創世記49章9節 ユダは、ししの子。
the flocks：「群れ」一般をいい、何の「群れ」であるかは省略されている
couched - by :により表現される
the fountain：「噴出」をいい、多くは「噴水」を意味する。ここでは mountain と押韻するため、「ガウガウ」などといった吼え声をこのように言う
won our spurs：spur は乗馬靴に付ける拍車。両足1組で使うため、1人分でも複数形。
（戦で）馬を駆けるとき拍車で腹を叩くので、 win one 's spurs （手柄を立てる；名声を得る；騎士に叙せられる）という表現がある。
brisket：胸肉
surloin：サーロイン。って、人を何だと思って…
Marignan：イタリア中部シエナ州のマリニャーノ村 Marignano。フランソワ一世がスイス傭兵軍を滅ぼした。
pardie：「神よ」といった呼びかけに当たるが、どちらかというと罵りに近く、ここではhardyと押韻するのに付け足した感じ。
the rash deed's recalment：the rash deed to be recalled, undone(W & K)
crucible：坩堝は錬金術に使われた道具の1つ。ボードレールにも錬金術をネタにした詩句があるくらい、当時はまだポピュラーな話題だった。
the smoke in her face：フランス宮廷に於ける煙草は、アンリ2世の治世に駐ポルトガル大使ジャン・ニコが初めて齎し、これをメディシス王妃が頭痛薬として廷臣に配って以来。つまり時代が下るから、この時の描写としては時代錯誤。
---To the page ：本の頁と同じ綴、同じ発音ではあるが、此方の page はおそらくイタリア語 paggio (=paid boy)に由来する別の単語。
なお、冒頭の To は数行前の "From the poor slave" に掛かっている。
a youth：次の対句でロルジュ卿を"a noble"として対比しているから、別人の筈だが、それにしては名前も何も出てこない。
Nemean：アルゴス人一般をいうが、「野蛮人」とはギリシア神話の英雄ヘーラクレースを指す。彼の為した12の偉業最初の冒険が、（後に獅子座となった）『ネメアーの獅子』退治であった。
maugre: despite; only occurrence in Browning. (Woolfoad & Karlin)
the King took the closet：古来 closet は「小部屋」を意味し、「隠れ場所」を含意した。そのため "a skeleton in the closet" という慣用句があり、「他人に知られたくない恥ずかしい秘密」を意味する。
come in pat：思う壺に嵌る
_Venienti occurrite morbo!_："Make your test before it's too late." ローマ帝国の詩人にして風刺家、ペルシウスの箴言。
theorbo：キタローネとも呼ぶ巨大なリュート。指板が付くストップ弦に加えて、拡張バス弦（通奏低音用の開放長弦）を張るため、ツインネックを1つに繋げたような長大な構造を持つ。16世紀末、聴衆及び会場の大規模化に伴い開発された。
ロンサールにとって、リュートは詩の伴奏手段にして発想の源であったが、時期的にテオルボを手にしたのは晩年だったであろう。ブローニングは押韻のため、リュートに代えてテオルボとしたまでで、時代考証は期待できない。
