ウィリアム・ボンド William Bond
最初と最後に語り手が現れるバラッドの典型を踏襲する点でも、男女の交流を謳いながら聖書をモチーフにする点でも、本作は Mental Traveller の姉妹編と言えよう。逆説的ながらもハッピーエンドなのは、読者への思い遣りであろうか。

ウィリアム・ボンドが間近に見えて

William Bond：月面にあるウィリアム・ボンド クレーターの名となった William Cranch Bond(1789/9/9 - 1859/1/29)はアメリカ合衆国の天文学者で、天体写真の創始者であった。本作とは名前以外に関わりない。最初の業績である大彗星発見が1811年なので、ブレイクはその存在を知らずに本作を書いた可能性が高い。
Fairies：「妖精」と訳される存在概念は地域年代により異なり、おそらくブレイクは Shakespeare の舞台を下敷にしている。
Mary Green：Mary は聖母の名に因む。
Sister Jane：Mary Green と韻を踏む。Sister とあるのみ、姉か妹か修道女なのか不明。作中では一言もなく、Mary Green の影のよう。
Angels of Providence：こんな天使は聞いたことがない。Providence は「神の摂理（Divine Providence)」だったり、また Providence eye というと啓蒙主義の象徴ともなった「神の全能なる目」だったりするのだが。本作では死神のように描写される。死を司る大天使サリエルのことだろうか？それにしては複数だし…
what have I to do with thee：ヨハネによる福音書2章4節「イエスは母に言われた、『婦人よ、あなたは、わたしと、なんの係わりがありますか。わたしの時は、まだきていません』。」
男女の仲を描いたと見るなら、何とも意地っ張りの2人ではある。メアリー・グリーンはウィリアムを愛しながら、届かないと見るや浮気相手とでも幸せになれという。ウィリアム・ボンドは真意を知りつつ、自分は治らないと見て聖書を引き、メアリーに出て行くように言う。
進退窮まるメアリーが倒れる様は、鴎外の『舞姫』さながら。しかし卑怯者の鴎外にはない神を背負ったブレイクが、同じ結末を選ぶ筈もない。
遠慮というものを知らない種族に、これは意味が判らなかったか、本作は難解とされる。しかし
女房が妬くほど亭主もてもせず
などという川柳がウケる国では、それ程でもあるまい。キリスト教徒特有の儼しい記号と押し付けがましさは別にして。
