A Day, A Company
Welcome to The Apartment Next Door
Thank you for picking up this story and giving these characters a home in your imagination. Every reader breathes life into the story in a way that no writer can do alone
The next morning, Aiko woke to the faint hum of the city outside. Sunlight slipped through her window, lighting up the small apartment.
She stretched and yawned. Her first week in Tokyo was only beginning, but she was slowly finding her rhythm. School felt easier now, and the café job, though tiring, was starting to feel familiar.
As she packed her bag, there was a soft knock at the door.
“Who could that be so early?” she wondered aloud.
When she opened it, there he was. Asahi Watanabe, standing in the hallway with a small smile.
“Morning,” he said casually. “I thought I’d say hi before you leave.”
Aiko blinked. “Good morning… You live next door, remember?"
He grinned. “I know. I just wanted to make sure my new neighbor doesn’t disappear into the city without a proper greeting.”
Her cheeks warmed. “Thanks… I guess.”
Asahi leaned slightly on his doorframe, looking relaxed. “So, café work today?”
“Yeah,” she said. “And then school stuff later. You?”
“Part-time at the bookstore,” he replied. “But I’m free for a bit this morning. You want company on your walk?”
Aiko hesitated, then nodded. “Sure. It’s better than getting lost again.”
The streets were busy, but walking with Asahi made everything feel lighter. He pointed out shortcuts and local shops, chatting casually. Aiko found herself laughing more easily than she had since arriving in Tokyo.
“You really know your way around,” she said.
“I’ve been here a few years,” he said with a shrug." “Tokyo grows on you. Slowly, but it does.”
A comfortable silence followed as they walked side by side. Aiko felt a strange sense of ease. She had only known him for a day, yet it felt like a little piece of home had followed her to this huge city.
At the café, Aiko waved to the manager and headed in. She worked efficiently, taking orders, carrying drinks, and learning the ropes of the café life. Asahi lingered outside, watching briefly, then left when a customer called him back.
After her shift, Aiko returned to the apartment building. The hallway smelled faintly of detergent, like it always did, but today it felt more welcoming.
As she reached her door, she realized her keys weren’t in her bag. Panic fluttered in her chest.
“I must have left them inside…” she muttered.
Before she could think further, Asahi appeared at the end of the hall.
“Problem?” he asked, raising an eyebrow.
“My keys,” she admitted, fidgeting. “I think I left them inside.”
He smiled. “Step aside.”
Aiko stepped back, and Asahi unlocked the door with a spare key he always kept. She felt a little embarrassed.
“Thanks,” she said softly.
“No problem,” he said lightly. “Next time, just call me instead of panicking.”
She rolled her eyes but smiled. “Noted.”
Later that evening, Mei Tonoko knocked on her door. “Hey, Aiko! Asahi told me you were new to the building. Thought you might want some company tonight. We could hang out.”
Aiko hesitated. “Uh… sure.”
The three of them spent the evening chatting and laughing. Mei told stories about other residents, the little quirks of the apartment, and the best places to eat around the neighborhood. Aiko realized that Tokyo, which had seemed intimidating before, could feel like a small community.
As the night ended, Asahi walked Aiko to her door.
“See you tomorrow,” he said casually, but there was a gentle warmth in his voice.
“Yeah,” she replied, her stomach fluttering. “See you tomorrow.”
She closed the door and leaned against it. Her heart was racing, but not from fear. Something about Asahi made her feel… at home. Even in this huge, overwhelming city.
For the first time since arriving, she looked around her apartment and felt a sense of belonging. Maybe the apartment next door wasn’t just a place to stay. Maybe it was the start of something she hadn’t expected.
And for the first time, she felt excited for what tomorrow might bring.
