First Day, First Impressions

Welcome to The Apartment Next Door

Thank you for picking up this story and giving these characters a home in your imagination. Every reader breathes life into the story in a way that no writer can do alone

Aiko woke up to the sound of her alarm blaring. The city outside was already alive. Cars honking, footsteps on the street, trains rumbling somewhere in the distance.

She sat up and rubbed her eyes. Today was her first day at her new school. Her stomach fluttered with nerves.

After a quick shower, she changed into her uniform. The white blouse and plaid skirt felt strange after years in her small-town school. She checked herself in the mirror. “I can do this,” she whispered.

Breakfast was simple. She made a small bowl of cereal, thinking of her grandparents. A small pang of homesickness hit her. But then she remembered Asahi’s smile from the day before. It made her heart beat a little faster.

She left the apartment and locked the door. The hallway smelled faintly of polished wood and detergent. She waved to Mei Tonoko in passing.

“Morning, Aiko!” Mei chirped. “Good luck today. Don’t get lost in Tokyo.”

Aiko laughed. “Thanks, Mei. I’ll try not to.”

The walk to school was longer than she expected. Tokyo streets were busy and confusing. Tall buildings loomed overhead, and crowds pressed past her on every side.

Finally, she found the school gates. A modern building, bustling with students in neat uniforms. She felt a nervous excitement and hesitation.

Inside, she was greeted by a friendly teacher. “You must be Aiko Hayashi. Welcome. I’ll show you to your class.”

Aiko followed, clutching her bag tightly. She noticed other students glancing at her. Some curious, some polite smiles, some indifferent.

Her classroom was lively. A few students whispered, others doodled, but most were already talking in small groups. She found an empty desk near the window.

“Hey, are you new?” a cheerful voice asked. A girl with short brown hair leaned over. “I’m Yumi. Don’t worry, everyone was new once. You’ll be fine.”

Aiko smiled. “I’m Aiko. Nice to meet you.”

The teacher began calling names, taking attendance. Aiko’s heart pounded each time. Then came lunch break.

She unpacked her bento quietly and looked out the window. The city seemed endless, stretching beyond her sight.

A soft voice interrupted her thoughts. “Is this seat taken?”

Aiko looked up. A boy with dark hair and a calm expression stood there. Her breath hitched.

“Uh, no,” she stammered.

He smiled and sat down. Her mind suddenly went blank. It was him. Asahi Watanabe.

“I didn’t know you went to this school,” she said quietly.

“Yeah, just a year ahead,” he replied. “Looks like we are neighbors and classmates.”

Her heart skipped. Tokyo was huge. And yet, the first familiar face she saw was right next door.

Lunch passed quickly with small talk. Asahi was easy to talk to, friendly without being overbearing. He told her about the best places to eat around the school and how to navigate the crowded streets.

After school, Aiko headed to her part-time job. She had applied to a small café nearby, wanting some independence and spending money.

The café was cozy. Wooden tables, warm lighting, and the rich smell of coffee. The manager, a kind middle-aged woman, introduced her to the team.

“You’ll start by helping with orders and serving tables,” the manager said. “Don’t worry, we’ll show you everything.”

Aiko nodded. She felt nervous but determined. As she worked, she realized that even small tasks could be satisfying. She liked seeing customers smile when she handed them their drinks.

After her shift, she walked back to the apartment. Tokyo’s streets were glowing under the evening lights. She felt tired but fulfilled.

She stepped into her apartment and saw Asahi’s door across the hall. He was there, looking out the window at the city lights.

“Hey,” she called softly.

He turned and smiled. “Hey. How was your first day?”

“Busy,” she said. “But good. I think I can manage it.”

“Glad to hear that,” he said, his eyes kind. “If you ever need help, just ask. Seriously. I live right next door.

Aiko felt her chest warm. It was strange, feeling connected to someone so quickly.

She waved goodnight and stepped inside. Sitting on her bed, she thought about the day. School had been overwhelming, work had been tiring, but she had survived. More than that, she had met Asahi again.

A small smile spread across her face. The apartment next door was starting to feel less like a temporary place.

Maybe it was the start of something new. Something she did not yet understand.

And just like that, Tokyo no longer felt quite so big.

Writing this story has been a journey full of laughter, late-night inspiration, and occasional hair-pulling over plot twists. I am deeply grateful to everyone who has supported me along the way. Your comments, encouragement, and patience mean the world

To the readers thank you for joining me in this little corner of fiction. You have made every chapter worthwhile, and I hope the story has given you a few moments of joy, suspense, or reflection

To those who have followed from the beginning and those who have just discovered the apartment's secrets your presence has mattered more than words can capture

Stay curious, stay kind, and remember sometimes the most interesting stories are happening right next door

With heartfelt gratitude
