A figure begins to walk down the high school corridors. He has his hands in the pockets of his school uniform. As he walks down the hallway, he glares his eyes up and sees a younger student surrounded by three older students. The three older students are clearly and obviously picking on the younger student as everybody walks by. The figure begins to walk towards them.
‘My name is Shuji. I’m a high school student who someday dreams of becoming a police detective. I want to uphold order, justice and society.’
Shuji walks up to the bullies and taps the ringleader on the shoulder.
“Huh?”
Shuji looks at the ringleader.
“Leave that kid alone.”
The ringleader turns to his two friends, who both find Shuji amusing and begin to snicker. The ringleader grabs Shuji’s collar.
“And what if I don’t? What are you going to do, huh?”
Shuji quickly glances both left and right. The ringleader begins to lower his guard but before he can release Shuji from his grasp, Shuji swings at the ringleader and knocks him backwards.
“Bastard!”
The ringleader clenches his fist and swings back at Shuji, which causes him to lose his balance and fall back. The bully proceeds to fight with Shuji but their altercation is quickly broken up as a teacher sees the fight.
“Hey! What are you two doing?”
The teacher runs towards Shuji and separates him from the bully.
“There will be no fighting at this school. Both of you are in a lot of trouble.”
The bully looks towards Shuji with a hateful gaze.
“You’re going to regret that.”
Shuji got into trouble for the events that occurred. After the school day ended, Shuji began to walk home. Unknown to Shuji, he was being followed.
Shuji ended up walking down an empty road whilst looking towards the floor. Shuji looks upwards and notices that his path is blocked. The three bullies from earlier stand in front of him. The ringleader smiles and looks at Shuji.
“You know how this is gonna go.”
Shuji puts up a valiant fight but stands no chance against the three of them. Shuji is beaten pretty badly but the bullies leave soon after.
After resting on the ground for a little while, Shuji gets up off of the ground and continues to walk home.
“Justice, Order, I did the right thing.”
Shuji looks down and notices that someone is following close behind him. Shuji prepares to be attacked again as he is certain that the bullies have come back.
Before Shuji could prepare, a cloth is placed over Shuji’s face. Shuji tries to struggle but he quickly begins to pass out.
Shuji wakes up. As he slowly opens his eyes, he looks around and notices lots of commotion around him.
“What’s going on?”
Shuji realises what has happened and quickly attempts to stand up but nearly loses his balance. He looks around and tries to analyse the situation. He looks to the sky and notices that he appears to be underground. He is in a city but the only people around are all in uniforms from different schools and they all appear to be panicking. Shuji looks to the sky again and notices a stadium-style giant television screen in the centre, protruding from the top of the dome. He notices that small screens appear to be placed around the city also.
Shuji tries to walk around and enters a building. As Shuji enters the building, he begins to feel fearful. He notices a gun with a camera style lens attached, hanging from the corner of the room. The weapon points towards Shuji as he quickly leaves the building.
Suddenly the giant screen as well as all of the smaller screens turn on. A voice begins to come from the screens as all of the panicking suddenly stops and the students around the city turn their attention to the screens.
“Hello. I’m sure that everybody is incredibly confused right now. I will explain this situation to you clearly. 600 random students have been selected to remain here for a while.”
One student begins to panic.
“I gotta get out of here.”
He begins to look around frantically as another student berates him.
“Shut up and listen.”
The voice continues to speak.
“Each day, we will kill one student.”
People begin to panic and get noisy. One student begins to shout.
“You can’t do this; people will know we’re missing!”
Another student agrees with this.
“Yeah, the police are going to come for us!”
The screen continues to speak as everyone begins to quieten.
“We have faked medical reports for each student here. All of your friends and family believe that you are currently in a coma. The rest of the details are not important. Your only chance of survival is to partake in this game.”
The students nervously begin to look at each other. The voice begins to announce the rules.
“The rules are as follows:
Each day, one person from amongst you will be executed.
The one who shall be executed is the person who the system deems to be the unhappiest.
Intentional murder as well as tampering with the security guns is forbidden.
After one year, all remaining participants shall be freed.
That is all.”
The screen suddenly turns off. Everybody is silent for a brief second. A female student screams and everybody around her turns to look at her.
“I don’t wanna die!”
Mass panic begins to break out and a riot-style eruption begins. The streets begin to get filled with chaos as Shuji quickly goes into the building that he previously left. When he enters the building, he looks at the gun in the corner. Shuji turns to lock the door but stops before deciding against it. Shuji then looks around the building that he is in.
“Huh. It looks like a small hardware store.”
Shuji debates going back outside but realises that it would be smart to avoid the chaos.
“I can’t do much by myself. When the situation quietens down, I will bring order to this new society and find us all a way out of here.”
Shuji waits for a moment but nobody seems to enter the building. Shuji then finds a secure spot in the room and falls asleep.
