Chapter 46: The Creation that Surpassed its Design.

The battle began.

Melanorus's six eyes remained fixed on the armored doll. The creature's massive form shifted, muscles coiling beneath its ancient hide. The twisted branches of its tail swayed slowly, reaching toward the doll like grasping fingers.

The doll stood with the kendama in its newly formed hand, the string hanging between the handle and the ball, swinging gently.

Kaede, Adelgund, Averhilda, Albruna, and I watched. Cautiously. Hoping.

Melanorus lunged.

The doll reacted.

It narrowly dodged the first claw, twisting to the side, the kendama swinging wildly. Then another attack. Then another. Its movements were fast, faster than I had seen before. The armor moved with it, plates shifting, ink flowing.

But the doll was not attacking.

It was learning.

The doll swung the kendama.

The tama, flew in completely the wrong direction. The string wrapped around the doll's arm, tangling. The doll stumbled, trying to free itself.

It tried again. The tama arced too high, missing Melanorus by several feet. The string twisted awkwardly.

Adelgund's voice was incredulous. "Is it... playing?"

Kaede's eyes narrowed. "No. It's learning."

I realized she was right.

The doll was not simply following predetermined movements. It was figuring out how the weapon worked. Experimenting. Adjusting.

Melanorus attacked again.

The doll dodged while continuing to experiment, its body moving on instinct while its attention remained on the weapon.

Several failed attempts later, the doll finally understood the rhythm.

It swung the tama above its head. The string stretched outward, the ball spinning at the end of its arc.

Then the doll released it.

THOOM!

The tama flew toward Melanorus, a blur of ink and starlight. It struck the creature's flank with a sound like thunder.

Melanorus recoiled. Its body shuddered, and for the first time, it seemed genuinely affected, not wounded, but struck. The six eyes widened, then narrowed.

The creature recovered almost immediately.

The doll caught the tama as it returned, the string wrapping around its hand. It stood ready.

But I saw the truth.

The damage was insufficient. The kendama had struck true, but Melanorus was still standing, still advancing.

The weapon alone was not enough.

I looked at the doll, at the kendama, at the creature before us. The doll had learned to use what I had drawn.

The doll swung the tama again.

It released.

This time…

It missed.

The tama flew past Melanorus, the string trailing behind it. The creature's six eyes followed the ball, tracking its arc. Its massive head turned, almost lazily, toward the flying object.

Then its eyes returned to the doll.

Almost as if it was mocking it.

The doll simply stood there.

Then…

Its wrist twisted.

KRAK.

The kendama rotated. The ink string, not ordinary string, I realized, but ink, living and responsive, suddenly pulled the tama sideways. The ball changed direction in midair, curving back toward Melanorus at an angle the creature had not anticipated.

Melanorus did not react quickly enough.

BOOM!

The tama slammed into the back of its head.

Melanorus staggered. Not much, but enough. The creature's attention snapped back to the doll, its six eyes narrowing with something that might have been surprise.

The doll caught the tama as it returned.

The string wasn't ordinary string. It was ink. And the doll could manipulate its trajectory.

***

Now the doll began experimenting.

Swing. Release. Redirect. Strike. Retrieve.

The tama repeatedly crashed into Melanorus, its flank, its legs, its neck. Each strike was small, almost insignificant on its own. But together, they added up.

Then the doll discovered another use for the kendama.

It began using the kozara, the smaller cup end, as a striking surface. It would swing the tama, then, instead of allowing it to travel directly toward Melanorus, it would strike the tama with the kozara. The angle would change. The tama would ricochet toward Melanorus from an unexpected direction.

Sometimes the tama hit.

Sometimes the kozara hit directly.

Sometimes the doll used the kozara to redirect the tama in midair.

Its movements gradually became less clumsy. More fluid. More confident.

The doll was learning through combat.

I watched it fight, my creation, my companion, the small figure I had drawn from memory and loneliness. It had become something more. Something fierce. Something clever.

Adelgund whispered, "It's... playing with it."

Kaede shook her head. "No. It's fighting."

Albruna's voice was barely audible. "It's learning as it goes."

I did not speak. I simply watched.

The doll had taken a simple toy, a kendama, of all things, and turned it into a weapon. It had discovered tricks I had never imagined. It had adapted.

Melanorus was still standing. Still advancing. Still dangerous.

But the doll was fighting.

And for the first time, I began to hope.

I watched the doll fight.

It was creating openings, not through overwhelming power, but through precision. Each strike with the kendama forced Melanorus to adjust, to react, to shift its attention. The creature was ancient and powerful, but it was also predictable. The doll was learning its patterns.

I tightened my grip on the G-Pen.

I could help.

I drew.

Ice magic. An icicle formed in the air before me, sharp and cold. It launched toward Melanorus, striking its flank. The damage was limited, barely a scratch. The creature did not even flinch.

I thought for a moment.

Then I drew another icicle.

I launched the icicle.

The doll noticed it.

It suddenly jumped.

CLANG!

The doll struck the flying icicle with the kozara, the smaller cup end of the kendama. The force of the strike dramatically changed the icicle's trajectory and speed. It shot forward like a projectile, faster than before, harder than before.

CRASH!

It pierced Melanorus with considerably greater force. The creature recoiled, a genuine wound appearing on its hide, larger than anything we had managed before.

Everyone stared.

Adelgund's voice was stunned. "What just…"

Albruna whispered, "It hit the icicle. It used the icicle."

I looked at the doll.

"You basically turned my magic into projectile."

The doll simply looked at me.

No response.

Then it turned back toward Melanorus.

I understood.

The doll could not fight Melanorus alone. Its kendama was powerful, but not enough. My magic could hurt the creature, but not enough. Together, we could do more.

I drew another icicle. Then another.

The doll positioned itself, its kozara ready.

I launched the first icicle. The doll struck it midair, sending it rocketing into Melanorus with doubled force.

I launched the second. The doll redirected it, sending it toward a joint in the creature's leg.

CRASH. CRASH.

Melanorus staggered. Its six eyes widened, then narrowed. It was beginning to understand that we were not simply a nuisance anymore.

Kaede shouted, "Keep doing that!"

Adelgund and Averhilda moved, using the openings we created to strike. Albruna, still magicless, threw stones, providing distraction.

The battle was turning.

Not winning. Not yet.

But turning.

I drew another icicle, the G-Pen warm in my hand.

The doll waited, its golden eyes fixed on me.

We were fighting together now. Creator and creation.

And for the first time since Melanorus had appeared, I believed we could win.

The battle became something else.

The doll moved with a fluidity I had not seen before, combining everything it had learned. Kendama attacks. Kozara strikes. Ricochet angles. The ink-string manipulation that sent the tama curving through the air in impossible arcs. Its armor absorbed blows that would have shattered it before, the ink hardening and softening in perfect rhythm.

And I was part of it now.

***

The doll launched the tama again.

It struck Melanorus, rebounded, and returned. But this time, something strange happened. The ball did not simply return to the doll's hand.

It landed perfectly on the kensaki of the kendama.

Click.

Everything stopped.

The doll froze. I froze. Even Melanorus paused, its six eyes fixed on the weapon.

Something appeared on the kendama.

Numbers.

2 — 3 — 4

They glowed faintly, appearing one after another, hovering above the weapon like stars.

No one understood what they meant.

The numbers remained glowing on the kendama.

The weapon began vibrating. The ink composing it shifted, swirling, recalibrating. Slowly, almost imperceptibly, the kendama became slightly larger. Not dramatically. Just enough for everyone to notice.

I stared. "What... was that?"

The doll did not answer.

Instead, it moved.

The doll gripped the enlarged kendama.

Melanorus charged.

The doll stepped forward rather than retreating.

At the exact moment Melanorus reached it,

WHAM!

The doll struck Melanorus directly with the Ozara.

This was not like the previous attacks. The impact was enormous, a thunderclap that shook the ground, that sent birds scattering from trees a mile away. Melanorus was thrown backward, its massive body crashing into the earth. A visible wound tore across its side, dark and deep.

I stared.

The numbers were not meaningless.

Something about the kendama had evolved.

Dust hung in the air.

Melanorus slowly rose. Its massive form shifted, legs finding purchase on the torn earth. The wound on its side was visible, dark, deep, significant. But the creature was not defeated. Not yet.

The doll stood between it and me.

The Kendama was now the same size as before.

I stared at the weapon.

I did not know what the numbers meant. Not yet. They had appeared when the tama landed on the kensaki, when the doll had achieved something I had not designed. They had grown the kendama, strengthened it, changed it.

But I understood one thing.

The doll was not simply using the weapon anymore.

It was beginning to understand it.

And perhaps, the weapon was beginning to understand the doll.

Melanorus watched us. Its six eyes moved from the doll to me to the others, calculating, assessing. The ancient creature had been wounded. It had been surprised. But it was not afraid.

It was interested.

The doll shifted its stance. The kendama swung gently, the string swaying between the handle and the ball.

I raised the G-Pen. The ink around my shoulders stirred. Kaede stood ready. Adelgund, Averhilda, and Albruna had regrouped, their weapons and eyes fixed on the creature.

No one moved.

The forest held its breath.

Melanorus lowered its head. The branches of its tail twisted slowly. Its six eyes fixed on the doll.

The doll looked back.

The golden eyes burned.

The battle was not over.

But something had changed.

What will happen next...
