Chapter Seven: 金の上に影がある

Gold glimmers brightest in the deepest dark,

where quiet shadows weave their intricate lies;

Though venomous words may seek to strike a spark,

true hearts remain unswayed by painted eyes.

When fragile masks crash down upon the stone,

and hollow promises dissolve to dust,

two souls shall find their strength in truth alone,

bound by the quiet armor of their trust.

The gentle Saturday morning breeze carried the faint scent of blossoming trees and warm concrete across the train station platform.

Miyuki stood near the yellow tactile paving, her hand lightly gripping the strap of her shoulder bag as she checked the digital clock resting above the platform tracks.

It was barely 9:45 AM.

She let out a small relieved breath while she stepping back into the shade of the glass pavilion. But before even three full minutes could tick by, a familiar, slightly out-of-breath voice called out from right behind her.

"Miyuki-chan!"

She turned around instantly, her face brightening at the sight of Takumi jogging down the stairs toward her. He was wearing a casual olive-green jacket over a crisp white shirt, his dark hair slightly ruffled by his quick pace.

Truth be told, Miyuki’s punctual arrival at the station was nothing short of a miracle. Her Saturday morning had started in total chaos.

At 9:00 AM sharp, Miyuki’s eyes had snapped open to the blinding morning sunlight pouring through her bedroom curtains direct to her face. A sudden, terrifying realization slammed into her brain; She had completely overslept her alarm. What followed was a frantic, panic-fueled whirlwind of throwing off her duvet, dashing to the bathroom to brush her teeth, and wildly pulling clothes out of her closet.

In her rush to not keep Takumi waiting, she had shoved her arms into a plain denim jacket, pulled on a pair of basic jeans, and was practically sprinting toward the front door to tie her shoes.

She hadn't even reached the front entryway before a voice cut through the air.

"And just where do you think you're going dressed like you're about to clean out the garden shed?"

Miyuki had frozen in her tracks, turning slowly to see her mother, Koharu, standing near the kitchen doorway with a laundry basket resting against her hip. Koharu’s sharp eyes swept up and down Miyuki’s rushed outfit, a playful, knowing smirk slowly curling her lips.

"M-Mom!" Miyuki stammered, her face turning red. "I'm in a hurry—"

"Takumi-kun." Koharu finished smoothly, setting the laundry basket down with an exaggerated sigh.

"I could guess that much from the desperate look on your face. But as your mother, I simply cannot allow you to walk out of this house looking like you put zero effort into your appearance. You've been looking forward to this day off all week."

"But I'm going to be late!" Miyuki protested weakly.

"You have ten minutes, and you are going to wear something better." Koharu commanded gently, taking Miyuki by the shoulders and forcefully turning her right back toward the staircase. "A young lady going on a real date deserves to look and feel special. Now go change into that soft cardigan I bought you last month."

Trapped under her mother's unyielding gaze, Miyuki had scrambled back up to her room, swapping her hasty outfit for a lovely cream-colored knit cardigan layered over a soft pastel blouse, paired with a high-waisted pleated skirt that fell gracefully just above her knees. She had quickly styled her dark hair with a delicate silver hairpin, leaving her looking effortlessly put-together.

...

Back on the train platform, Takumi finally reached her, taking a moment to catch his breath.

"Ah... sorry! Did you wait long?"

"No, not at all," Miyuki replied, offering him a sweet, reassuring smile. "I actually arrived not really that long."

As she spoke, Miyuki noticed Takumi’s eyes tracking over her.

His gaze drifted from the subtle sheen of her styled hair down to the cream cardigan and the soft drape of her skirt. He froze for a fraction of a second, his dark eyes widening slightly before a genuine, flush of pink dusted across his cheeks.

The silence stretched between them for a heartbeat too long.

Miyuki felt her own face flare up in an instant, a hot, uncontrollable blush rushing straight to the tips of her ears. She reflexively pulled the edge of her cardigan a little closer around her chest, trying desperately to play it cool.

"W-What?" Miyuki stammered, coughing softly into her hand to mask her fluttering heart. "Is... is there something weird on me? Did I-"

"No! No, not at all!" Takumi blushes furiously, rubbing the back of his neck as he quickly looked away, though a happy, helpless smile remained on his face. "You just... you look really, really pretty today, Miyuki-chan. Like... fantastic."

Miyuki’s chest swelled with a warm, fluttering sensation. Her mother’s meddling had been felt like demanding, but seeing Takumi’s breathless reaction made every single second of morning panic entirely worth it.

Clearing her throat again, Miyuki tried to smoothly change the subject before her face melted from the heat. "Anyway! How long has it been since the last time we actually spent time together like this? Just the two of us, without school stuff over our heads?"

Takumi nodded his head in agreement, his expression softening into a deep, comfortable relief. " I dunno. Things at school have been getting increasingly busy for both of us lately... feels like we haven't had a chance to just breathe."

"Then let's make sure today is about having us moment." Miyuki said softly, looking up into his eyes.

Right on cue, the low rumble of the approaching subway train echoed down the subterranean tunnel. The silver doors slid open with a smooth hiss, releasing a gentle rush of cool air onto the platform. Takumi naturally stepped aside, holding his hand out to shield her as she boarded first, before sliding into the seat right beside her.

As the train glided away from the platform, the heavy lingering shadow of school drama. Mio’s cold eyes, Ren’s toxic, manipulative mind games, and the suffocating pressure of upcoming exams was all left entirely behind in the dust.

---

Meanwhile, across town, the weekend rush was reaching its absolute peak at the city’s grandest commercial shopping complex.

Today marked the highly anticipated, nationwide premiering of the latest massive superhero blockbuster movie, Superman. Because it was a Saturday morning, the multi-story mall was completely swarming with people, mostly the high school students out in groups, young couples on dates, and eager movie fans dressed in graphic tees. The energetic chatter of the crowds echoed off the high glass ceilings of the atrium.

Navigating through the bustling concourse near the top-floor cinema complex was Masato Ren.

Dressed in an effortlessly expensive designer jacket and dark jeans, Ren walked with his usual relaxed, arrogant stride. His head was tilted down, his thumb rapidly typing away on his phone screen as he exchanged messages, completely ignoring the flowing crowd around him. A smug, faint smirk lingered on his lips likely chatting with someone.

However, completely unbeknownst to Ren, he was not walking alone.

Filing through the dense crowd just a few paces behind him was another high school student around his age. The boy had short black hair framing his face and wore a heavy, dark grey hooded sweatshirt.

His dark eyes were locked dead onto the back of Ren’s neck. There was no casualness in the boy's posture; his hands were shoved deep into his hoodie pockets, his shoulders rigid, and his gaze carrying a quiet, intense glare that burned straight through the surrounding crowd. Every step Ren took, the hooded boy matched with chilling, silent precision.

---

Farther down the same brightly lit cinema concourse, Miyuki and Takumi stepped off the vast escalator.

The moment they reached the main theater lobby, Miyuki’s eyes widened.

The line for the ticket counter stretched out like a colossal serpent, curling around the velvet ropes and extending nearly halfway back toward the game arcade across the hall.

" Crap!" Miyuki gasped, catching Takumi by the sleeve of his jacket in a sudden spike of panic.

"Takumi-kun, look at that queue! It’s huge! We need to hurry and get in line right now, or the tickets are going to completely run!"

Takumi didn't move an inch. Instead, he stood there looking down at her frantic expression, a proud, hopelessly smug smile spreading across his face.

He calmly reached into his jacket pocket, pulled out his smartphone, and tapped the screen before turning it toward Miyuki. Displayed on the screen was a digital confirmation receipt featuring a bold QR code, clearly marked: Superman.

Miyuki froze. She stared at the screen, then looked up at Takumi’s beaming face in utter disbelief.

"Wait... how?"

"I booked the tickets online yesterday afternoon while Tachibana-senpai was organizing the manuscript files." Takumi announced proudly, slipping his phone back into his pocket with a triumphant little shoulder toss. "I knew the premiere was going to be completely packed today. I wasn't about to risk us standing in a two-hour line or getting stuck sitting in the very front row."

Miyuki stared at him for three full seconds, her mind processing his unbelievable foresight. Then, her lips naturally curled into an adorable, exaggerated pout as she crossed her arms over her cardigan.

"Hey! That's totally not fair!" Miyuki complained, though her eyes were sparkling with affection. "You should have told me earlier! You let me panic all the way up the escalator just so you could show off!"

Takumi chuckled softly, his eyes crinkling at the corners as he reached out and lightly tapped the tip of her nose. " Sometimes we need some surprise in our life, honor student."

Miyuki huffed playfully, her cheeks dusting pink again at his words. She looked over toward the concession stands, which, while busy, had a significantly shorter queue than the main ticket line.

"Alright! Since you showed off with the tickets..." Miyuki declared happily, taking his hand and pulling him gently toward the snack counter, "...the popcorn and drinks are entirely on me! No but!"

Takumi smiled warmly, yielding to her bright enthusiasm.

" Nothing better in this world then a free treat."

A short while later, armed with a massive, warm bucket of popcorn and two iced sodas, Takumi and Miyuki showed their digital ticket pass to the usher and walked down the dimly lit, carpeted hallway into Auditorium 1.

The cool air of the theater washed over them as they stepped into the vast dark hall. Soft ambient blue lighting illuminated the aisles as the soft hum of chatter filled the room. Hand in hand, Miyuki and Takumi stepped up the carpeted stairs, finding their center-row seats.

They sank into the plush velvet chairs side-by-side, setting their shared popcorn tub between them as the main house lights began to slowly dim, signaling the start of the show.

---

The air inside the dark auditorium vibrated with the thunderous bass of the theater’s sound system. On the massive, silver screen towering over the audience, the film was reaching its dramatic climax.

Miyuki leaned forward slightly in her seat, her eyes reflecting the dazzling blue and golden hues radiating from the screen. She was completely captivated.

On screen, the main hero, a figure clad in bright, iconic colors blue and red stood alone against impossible odds. The narrative had reached a crushing low point: global news broadcasts slammed the hero with harsh criticism, public faith had crumbled, and even the very humans he fought so tirelessly to protect had turned their backs on him in fear and anger. Some had even actively tried to destroy him. Yet, despite the staggering weight of rejection, the hero refused to let his spirit break. He didn't fight out of a desire for praise, nor did he harbor bitterness toward those who misunderstood him. He fought simply because he believed in the innate goodness of humanity, holding onto hope when no one else would.

As the orchestral score swelled to a breathtaking crescendo, the story escalated. The hero's unyielding resolve sparked a chain reaction across the globe. Inspired by his refusal to give up, a group of superheroes stepped forward voluntarily despite the political pressure onto them to defend a small nation on the verge of a brutal invasion, holding the front line while Superman flew to a emptied city to tackle the world-ending threat directly.

Miyuki felt a strange, lump form in her throat. A wave of profound emotion washed over her, making the hairs on her arms stand up.

It was just a movie, a fictional superhero spectacle meant for weekend entertainment. Yet, sitting there in the dark beside Takumi, the core theme hit a raw, tender nerve deep within her soul.

She thought back to two days ago, the sudden terror she felt when she stepped into the Literature Club room only to find Ren waiting for her in the shadows, subtle traps laid to compromise her. She remembered how close she had come to letting self-doubt paralyze her, and how her heart had nearly given out under the weight of her own insecurities. But then she remembered yesterday afternoon at Gong Cha. She had stared straight into Ren's manipulative eyes, listened to his polished, poison-dripping words designed to tear her relationship apart, and she had chosen to stand her ground.

She had refused to give up on Takumi. She had refused to let a snake like Ren dictate her happiness.

And just like the hero on screen who inspired others, Miyuki realized she wasn't standing alone in her world, either. She had Yuri’s sharp tough-love warnings keeping her grounded. She had Rin’s noble, unshakeable dignity reminding her to protect what mattered. And above all, she had Takumi.

Without turning her head, Miyuki slowly slid her fingers down into the plush space between their seats. She reached out and wrapped her hand tightly around Takumi’s warm, steady palm, lacing her fingers with his.

Beside her, Takumi stirred slightly. He looked over in the dim lighting, noticing how tightly she was holding onto him.

Miyuki turned her head, meeting his soft, brown eyes in the dark. A warm breathtaking smile spread across her face, a smile filled with complete, unshakeable trust and pure affection. Takumi’s eyes widened slightly in surprise, but his expression softened instantly, squeezing her hand right back with a tender, reassuring pressure.

---

Meanwhile, several rows higher up in the very same auditorium, the mood was entirely different.

Sitting near the back aisle, tucked into the dark shadow of the upper pavilion, was the boy in the oversized grey hoodie. His dark hair hung low over his eyes as he sat completely still, his arms crossed tightly against his chest.

While his face was pointed toward the glowing screen, his gaze wasn't fixed solely on the superhero flying across the sky. Instead, his dark eyes sometimes shifted downward at a sharp diagonal angle, repeatedly locking onto a specific seat located four rows below him.

His target was Masato Ren.

From his elevated angle, the boy had an unobstructed view of the blonde student. Ren was slouching lazily in his velvet chair, one arm casually draped over the back of the seat next to him. A girl was occupying that seat, leaning close into Ren’s shoulder, her hand resting comfortably on his knee. They were clearly on a date, behaving with an easy, familiar intimacy that suggested they had been seeing each other for a while.

The boy in the hoodie ground his back molars together so tightly that his jaw ached. His posture remained rigid, a silent reservoir of burning resentment simmering just beneath his pale skin.

Down below, Ren let out an audibly dismissive scoff, completely unbothered by the quiet atmosphere of the theater. He tilted his head toward the girl beside him, his voice easily carrying through the surrounding seats during a quieter dialogue scene.

"God, this is so damn cringe." Ren sneered, rolling his eyes at the screen. "Look at him preaching about 'hope' and 'virtue' like some colorful boy scout in late 80's cartoon. It’s totally ridiculous."

The girl beside him let out a soft, giggly chime of agreement, snuggling closer into his designer jacket.

Ren ran a hand through his styled hair, continuing his aloud critique. "Honestly, the version from twelve years ago was miles better. That guy was dark, brooded properly, didn't waste time talking, and actually looks cool. That version had way more aura than this brightly colored clown."

Right next to the hooded boy, an adult man wearing a graphic movie shirt let out a loud, deeply annoyed sigh.

The film fan rubbed his temples, muttering under his breath just loud enough for the upper row to hear.

"Ugh... why does there always have to be some idiot who thinks a superhero movie is only good if the main character is a depressed emo who levels three city blocks of innocent civilians? The gloomy version completely missed the point of the character! Go watch a gritty crime drama if you hate hope so much..."

The boy in the hoodie didn't say anything at all. He didn't care about the cinematic debate, nor did he care about Superman's ideals. His entire world had narrowed down to the back of Masato Ren’s head.

---

Half an hour later, the grand orchestral finale echoed through the speakers as the massive screen faded to black. The credit roll began, illuminated by glowing silver typography sliding up against a starry background.

In most movies, audiences would immediately flood the aisles to exit, but because it was a major superhero blockbuster, virtually no one moved. The theater remained packed, everyone eagerly waiting for the inevitable post-credits scene.

To help people navigate, the low aisle safety lamps along the carpeted floor clicked on, casting a soft, golden ambiance across the auditorium rows.

Down in row H, Miyuki stretched her arms slightly, letting out a satisfied breath. "That was incredible." she whispered to Takumi, her eyes still sparkling.

"Yeah." Takumi agreed with a warm smile. "The writing was surprisingly deep."

As Miyuki shifted in her seat to set her empty soda cup into the armrest holder, her eyes casually scanned the rows around them. The dim yellow floor lights illuminated the faces of the waiting crowd.

Her gaze drifted up toward the northeast section of the seating grid, two rows above them.

Miyuki paused. Sitting near the end of row J was a boy with short black hair, his dark hoodie pulled slightly back. He wasn't looking at the screen; his face was turned downward toward the middle section, his eyes dark, intense, and completely unblinking.

Miyuki’s brows furrowed in immediate recognition.

Takumi noticed her sudden stillness. He leaned over, following her line of sight up toward the northeast diagonal. "Miyuki? Do you know that guy?"

Miyuki took a quiet breath, leaning in close to Takumi's ear so her voice wouldn't travel. "That's... Arisawa Arata."

Takumi’s eyes widened slightly in surprise. "Arisawa? As in... Kyouichiro's ex-boyfriend? The one you'd mentioned to me before?"

" Right" Miyuki whispered back, her face growing serious. "That's him."

Before Takumi could ask anything further, the silver text on the screen faded out, and the short, highly anticipated post-credits teaser sequence began playing. The entire auditorium went dead silent for sixty seconds as the audience soaked in the final surprise clip.

Then, the screen went completely black, and the bright, main overhead house lights flared on, signaling the absolute end of the show.

Up in row J, Arisawa Arata blinked against the sudden, blinding glare of the ceiling lights. He slowly stood up, shoving his hands into his hoodie pockets, preparing to blend into the exiting crowd.

Suddenly, a loud, loud voice boomed out from four rows ahead of him, cutting right through the chatter of the unseating crowd.

" Dude, what a complete waste of two hours!"

Arata stopped dead in his tracks.

Down in row F, Masato Ren stood up, tossing his empty popcorn bag carelessly onto his velvet chair. He stretched his arms lazily over his head, a disdainful smirk plastered across his face.

"Absolute trash. Cheap emotional bait for idiots with no taste. I can't believe people actually hype this junk up."

"I know, right?!" A sharp, bubbly girl's voice chimed in instantly from right beside him. "It was so boring! I almost fell asleep like three times, Ren-kun~!"

Arata’s eyes locked onto the couple down below. But the moment his gaze landed on the girl standing beside Ren, his entire body went completely stiff. His jaw dropped slightly, an expression of profound, paralyzing shock sweeping over his pale face.

*What...?*

Arata thought, his mind racing into a dead-end wall.

*Who... who is that?!*

The girl hanging possessively off Ren’s arm, wearing a short pink miniskirt and giggling at his every word, had a bright, bleach-blonde short hair with heavy silver earrings.

She was not Kyouichiro Yumiko.

Arata stood completely frozen in the aisle, his brain struggling to process the reality presented before him. He had spent the last two hours harboring a toxic, painful weight in his chest, believing that the girl sitting next to Ren was Yumiko, the girl who had dumped him, called him a hopeless nerd, and replaced him with the school's rich star athlete. He had assumed Yumiko was down there, happily acting like Ren's devoted princess.

But Yumiko wasn't even present. Ren was on an intimate, romantic weekend movie date with a completely different girl.

At the exact same time, down in row H, Takumi and Miyuki had both turned around toward the commotion with the exact same wave of utter bewilderment slammed into them.

Miyuki’s jaw parted in complete soundless shock. Beside her, Takumi’s eyes were practically wide enough to pop out of his head.

"Is that... Masato Ren?" Takumi stammered under his breath, leaning closer to Miyuki as if he couldn't believe his own vision. "And... who is that girl with him?!"

"I... I want to know that too." Miyuki whispered back, her voice laced with intense disgust and sheer disbelief. "She has short blonde hair... it's definitely not Kyouichiro Yumiko."

The realization hit all three witnesses like a ton of bricks.

Just yesterday afternoon at Gong Cha, Yumiko had been sitting at that booth table, arrogantly boasting to the entire Literature Club about how incredible Ren was, how he was a man of high status who could give her everything, and how superior he was to her 'loser' ex. She had looked like a proud trophy wife, utterly convinced that she was the center of Ren's universe.

And yet, less than twenty-four hours later, here was Masato Ren openly taking another girl out on a romantic date to a premiering blockbuster at a high-end mall, slinging his arm around her waist without a single shred of guilt or hesitation.

Yumiko was being played like a fool. Ren wasn't loyal to her at all; she was merely another trophy in his collection, entirely disposable the moment he got bored.

Up in row J, Arata’s hands trembled violently inside his dark hoodie pockets. A chaotic storm of conflicting emotions of shock, bitter irony, lingering pain, and a dark, twisted realization burned through his veins as he stared at the blonde girl leaning into Ren’s side.

Down in row F, Masato Ren and his new blonde companion were completely oblivious to the three pairs of eyes locked onto them from the crowd.

"Come on, babe." Ren said smoothly, slinging his arm around the blonde girl’s waist and pulling her close as they stepped out into the exit aisle. "Let's go grab some high-end sushi on the top floor."

"Yay! You're the absolute best, Ren-kun!" the blonde girl squealed, pressing her cheek against his shoulder as they casually walked down the carpeted steps toward the main lobby doors, their loud, superficial laughter fading into the bustling crowd.

Miyuki, Takumi, and Arata remained standing in the dimly lit theater, the heavy, silence stretching long between them as the reality of Ren's true nature laid entirely exposed in the daylight.
