Chapter Five: 警告
Shadows linger where false promises tread,
A gilded blade that guards a sacred vow;
Lest careless footsteps walk the path of dread,
The awakened heart must shape its future now.
The warm, honeyed glow of the hanging lamps inside Hanamichi Cafe felt suddenly suffocating.
Miyuki sat frozen in hear seated chair, her fingers gripping the edge of her skirt so tightly her knuckles turned chalk-white.
Standing right beside their table, framed against the dark glass window of the tearoom, was Katsuragi Rin. She held the neatly folded navy blue sweater in both hands, her long golden hair catching the amber light of the cafe like literal sunlight.
Miyuki’s breath hitched. Looking at Rin standing inside this exact tearoom shattered the thin boundary between her waking reality and the nightmarish visions that had haunted her sleep.
*This cafe...*
The terrifying memory flashed before her eyes with sickening clarity:
The dim evening in her dream, standing outside on the cold concrete sidewalk, staring through this exact glass window to see Takumi sitting at a table with this very golden-haired girl, smiling peacefully while Miyuki drowned in a sea of self-loathing. And then, in an instant, the vision shifted to the howling wind of the school rooftop, Rin’s piercing blue eyes staring down at her with sharp, righteous disdain, her voice ringing out like a judgment bell:
*“Stop making Takumi suffer more than you already have.”*
A cold sweat broke out across Miyuki’s back. The room seemed to tilt beneath her.
"Asahina-senpai?"
A clear, refined voice shattered her paralysis.
Miyuki snapped her head up, her heart slamming violently against her ribs.
Rin was looking down at her, those intense, icy-blue eyes fixed directly on Miyuki’s trembling form. There was no hostility in her face. Only a calm, polite curiosity.
" Y-Yes?" Miyuki managed to whisper, her voice tight.
Rin offered a small, elegant smile, her posture perfectly poised. "Tendou-senpai mentioned during our group assignment earlier day that he had a girlfriend. When he spoke about how dedicated and brilliant you were, I realized you must be Asahina Miyuki-san, one of the honor students in the second-year class."
Rin extended a slender, immaculate hand toward Miyuki across the small distance between their seats. "It is an honor to meet you properly."
Miyuki stared at the offered hand for a fleeting second. Her mind raced, a quiet panic fluttering in her chest. But looking at Takumi, who was watching her with innocent and bright expectation, she swallowed the lump in her throat. Forcing a smooth, polite smile onto her lips, Miyuki reached out and took Rin’s hand, giving it a gentle, respectful shake.
"The honor is mine, Katsuragi-san," Miyuki said, keeping her voice steady. "I've heard a lot about your accomplishments."
"Please, just Rin is fine," the golden-haired girl replied smoothly, retracting her hand.
Takumi looked up at Rin, gesturing toward the spacious round booth where he and his mother were sitting. "Since you're already here, Katsuragi-san, why don't you join us for meal?"
"Oh, yes! Do sit down, dear!" Tendou Aoi chimed in warmly from the side, beaming at the striking first-year student. "It's the least we can do to thank you for helping Takumi with his trip notes!"
Rin placed a gentle hand over her chest, bowing her head slightly in sincere appreciation. "Thank you so much for the kind offer, Tendou-san, Senpai. But I am afraid I must politely decline for tonight. My family is expecting me home for dinner shortly, and I only stopped by Hanamichi Cafe to return senpai's sweater. "
She turned back to Takumi, offering him one final, graceful bow. "Thank you again for lending me your sweater, Senpai. It saved me from a terrible cold. Please enjoy your evening with your family."
With seamless grace, Rin turned on her heel and glided out of the cafe, the small brass bell above the heavy wooden entrance door letting out a soft, cheerful chime as she vanished into the cool twilight outside.
"My. What a lovely, well-mannered young lady." Aoi murmured, looking toward the door with an admiring sigh. "And so stunningly beautiful, too. She really does look like a painting you see at museum."
"Yeah, she's really responsible." Takumi agreed, reaching for his tea cup. "She took the lead on organizing our class historical summary at the museum yesterday."
So then, Takumi and his mother resumed their lively conversation, chatting happily about the upcoming school festival and neighbor updates.
Miyuki taking small, silent bites of her meal. She nodded along to Aoi’s jokes and offered sweet smiles whenever Takumi looked her way, but inside, her mind was a tempest. No matter how hard she tried to focus on the warm food or the cozy atmosphere of the cafe, she could not purge the image of Katsuragi Rin from her thoughts.
The way Rin spoke, the way she carried herself, the quiet, formidable strength behind those icy blue eyes... everything about that girl felt impossibly vast, pure, and utterly terrifying.
---
An hour later, the dinner ended, and Miyuki bade farewell to Takumi and his mother.
Refusing Takumi's persistent offer to walk her all the way to her doorstep so he could rest after his long trip from Saitama, Miyuki began her quiet walk home alone through her residential neighborhood.
The night air was crisp and dark, the streetlamps casting long, flickering shadows across the silent stone walls and garden fences.
Miyuki walked with her hands tucked deep into her cardigan pockets, the silver-and-blue wristband Takumi had given her chiming softly with every step she took.
As the quiet streets stretched out before her, another dark fragment of her recurring nightmares resurfaced, haunting her thoughts with terrifying detail.
It was the dream she had tried so desperately to forget:
The dream where she had allowed herself to be seduced by Masato Ren's poisonous sweet talk. She remembered the blinding neon signs of a cheap, seediness-drenched love hotel district on the outskirts of the city. She remembered the sudden, deafening crash of a door being kicked off its hinges, the harsh, flashing red lights of police cruisers illuminating the rain-slicked alleyway outside, and the humiliating, icy metal of handcuffs snapping around her wrists. She remembered the interrogation, the whispers of her neighbors, and the utter, absolute destruction of her reputation as she was pulled away alongside Ren, who had merely laughed carelessly at the entire ordeal.
*Why...?*
Miyuki thought, her chest tightening as a shudder ran down her spine.
*Why are those dreams getting clearer and clearer every single day? It feels less like dram and more like... a living memory from a life I haven't lived... yet.*
Lost in her dark reflections, Miyuki turned a corner into a quiet, tree-lined residential alleyway several blocks from her home.
Suddenly, a sound of low, hushed laughter echoed down the street.
Miyuki stopped dead in her tracks.
Just twenty yards ahead, under the dim, flickering light of a high streetlamp, a metal garden gate swung open. Stepping out onto the pavement was a familiar, tall boy with disheveled blonde hair and an unbuttoned uniform shirt who is none other than Masato Ren.
Walking right beside him, leaning heavily against his arm, was the girl with the chestnut-brown bob haircut who is the very girl she saw at school which is Kyouichiro Yumiko.
Miyuki’s breath caught in her throat. The vivid warnings Yuri had given her under the tree earlier that afternoon rushed back into her mind with startling force:
*“She threw away her old friends, and her reputation just to fit into whatever twisted mold Ren wanted her to be in... To him, she's just a trophy.”*
Acting purely on instinct, Miyuki pressed her back flat against the tall stone wall of a nearby residence, hiding herself deep within the dark shadow cast by an overhanging ivy bush. She held her breath, peering cautiously around the edge of the stone structure.
Under the flickering yellow light of the lamp, Ren pulled Yumiko close by her waist. Yumiko looked up at him with wide, desperate eyes, her heavily made-up face filled with an unhealthy, suffocating devotion. Ren leaned down, pressing his lips against hers in a long, lingering kiss.
Yet, even as he kissed her, Miyuki’s sharp eyes caught the horrifying truth.
Ren’s eyes were not closed. He was staring over Yumiko's shoulder into the dark street, his expression completely detached, cold, and utterly bored. There was zero drop of genuine affection or warmth in his posture.
He was simply going through the motions, manipulating a girl who had completely surrendered her dignity for him.
A deep wave of disgust washed over Miyuki that it's making her stomach turn.
*He doesn't care about her!*
Miyuki realized, her heart pounding against her ribs in horror.
*He doesn't care about the girl she stole from other guy. To a monster like that, girls are just targets to be conquered, broken, and discarded when the novelty wears off.*
She squeezed her eyes shut, pressing her hand over her mouth to suppress her shaky breathing.
A fierce, unshakeable vow ignited deep within her soul.
*I will never ruin my entire life for a man like that. I will never throw away Takumi's love, my mother's hope, or my own future for someone who wouldn't even look at me as a human being.*
Waiting until Ren and Yumiko turned down the opposite street, their footsteps fading into the quiet night, Miyuki carefully stepped out from behind the stone wall. She took a long, stabilizing breath, turned on her heel, and quickly navigated the back alleys, sneaking her way out of the area as fast as her legs could carry her.
---
Ten minutes later, Miyuki reached the familiar street leading to her house. Her heart was still beating rapidly from the unsettling encounter, but the sight of her home's warm porch light in the distance offered a comforting beacon of safety.
However, as she approached her front iron gate, she noticed a slender figure standing quietly on the sidewalk under the soft glow of her streetlamp.
Miyuki slowed her pace, her eyes widening.
Standing right outside her house, holding a sleek leather school bag, was Katsuragi Rin.
The moment Rin noticed Miyuki approaching down the sidewalk, her sharp, icy-blue eyes softened. A bright, cheerful smile broke across her flawless face, and she raised a slender hand, waving happily at Miyuki as if she's greeting an old friend.
"Asahina-senpai!" Rin called out softly, stepping forward to meet her.
Miyuki stopped a few paces away, completely caught off guard. "Katsuragi-san...? What are you doing here? Is something wrong?"
Rin stopped in front of her, placing her hands behind her back, her long golden hair swaying gently over her shoulders in the cool night breeze. A look of genuine, apologetic sheepishness crossed her features.
"I am so sorry for showing up at your house like this all of sudden." Rin said, bowing her head slightly. "After I left Hanamichi Cafe earlier, I realized that my sudden appearance might have been insensitive. Seeing Tendou-senpai's girlfriend sitting right there... I worried I might have caused an awkward misunderstanding between you two by returning his sweater in person."
Miyuki blinked, surprised by the girl's thoughtful consideration. She quickly shook her head, offering an earnest reply. " No, no! Please don't worry about that at all, Katsuragi-san! You didn't do anything wrong. Takumi-kun told me how helpful you were during the trip, so I completely understand."
Rin let out a soft, relieved breath, her smile returning. " Thanks goodness."
She looked up at the quiet facade of Miyuki’s house, her blue eyes shining with a touch of quiet admiration.
"You know, Asahina-san... you really are lucky. Tendou-senpai is such a rare wonderful person. During our research project in Saitama, whenever the rest of the group got tired or stressed, he was always the first one to step up, encourage everyone, and make sure no one was left behind. He speaks about you with such pure warmth. A guy like that is truly equivilant to diamond on how hard to find."
"Thank you..." Miyuki murmured, her heart swelling with quiet pride, her fingers touching the braided silver wristband on her arm. "He really is."
Suddenly, the cheerful, warm smile on Rin’s face completely dropped.
The atmosphere around the golden-haired girl shifted in a fraction of a second. The bright, accessible first-year student vanished which replaced by an intense, formidable presence. Her icy-blue eyes narrowed slightly, fixing onto Miyuki with a piercing analytical focus that made the air between them feel instantly heavier.
"Which is why..." Rin spoke, her voice dropping into a calm, serious register that cut through the quiet night, "...I was quite surprised when I saw you in the Literature Club room at school earlier today."
Miyuki froze.
A sharp bolt of electric shock shot straight up her spine. Her eyes widened in absolute, sheer disbelief.
"W-What...?" Miyuki stammered, her voice trembling. "The... the Literature Club room? But... weren't you on the official study trip to Saitama today?!"
" I was returned earlier than everybody else." Rin explained calmly, her tone devoid of any malice, carrying only flat, objective truth. "I had an urgent matter that required me to return to the school early. I was walking down the third-floor corridor when I saw you enter the club room."
Miyuki’s blood turned to liquid ice. A wave of frantic, overwhelming panic surged through her chest.
If Rin had seen her in that room... if Rin thought she was meeting Masato Ren behind Takumi’s back...
"Katsuragi-san, please!" Miyuki pleaded frantically, taking an urgent step forward, her hands shaking as she tried desperately to explain. "It's not what you think, I swear! I only went to that room because Tachibana-senpai sent me a text asking me for help! I had absolutely no idea that Masato was going to be inside! I wasn't trying to—"
"Relax, Asahina-san."
Rin’s soft, clear command cut off Miyuki’s panicked rambling instantly.
Rin tilted her head slightly, her cool blue eyes watching Miyuki’s distressed state without a single hint of judgment or suspicion.
" I know you didn't." Rin said quietly, her expression relaxing into a calm, reassuring posture. "I did not assume anything improper happened. In fact, I stood near the corridor window and watched the entire interaction. I saw the moment you realized he was there, I saw you back away, and I saw you run out of the room as fast as you could."
Miyuki gasped softly, her heaving chest slowly settling as the wave of panic began to subside. "You... you saw me run away?"
"I did." Rin nodded firmly. " And also, I know very well what kind of person Masato Ren is."
Rin let out a small, quiet sigh, her gaze drifting toward the dark sky for a fleeting moment before returning to Miyuki.
"On my very first day as a transfer student at our school." Rin revealed casually, her voice carrying a subtle edge of cold disdain, "Ren cornered me and attempted to asked me out. He assumed that because he has a reputation, every girl would naturally swoon over him. I rejected him on the spot, but I have kept a close eye on his behavior ever since. He have obsession to breaks the relationship by seduce the woman to betray their partner."
Rin paused, stepping a fraction closer to Miyuki.
"I was also nearby just twenty minutes ago," Rin added smoothly. "I saw you hiding behind the wall when Ren was with that Kyouichiro girl. I saw the look of disgust on your face."
" I'll tell you what. Kyouichiro Yumiko is not only girl that Masato Ren stole, she's already successful stole another girl from a guy not long ago, which what could make it worse is that girl is exactly like you... honor student that have a nice guy as boyfriend.
Miyuki stood completely speechless. The realization that this golden-haired girl had been quietly observing everything, not with malice, but with a sharp, vigilant clarity which it left Miyuki utterly awestruck, that she's completely doesn't care about the revelation just now.
"Thank you..." Miyuki whispered from the very bottom of her heart, tears of sheer relief pricking the corners of her eyes. "Thank you so much for not misjudging me, Katsuragi-san..."
" No need to thank me for that." Rin replied smoothly.
However, before Miyuki could take a breath of relief, Rin’s expression hardened once more. Her icy blue eyes locked onto Miyuki with an unyielding, intense seriousness that commanded total attention.
"But do not drop your guard so easily, Asahina-senpai." Rin warned, her tone sharp and uncompromising.
Miyuki blinked, startled by the sudden shift. "Eh...?"
"You are Tendou-senpai’s girlfriend." Rin stated firmly, her voice carrying a weight that felt almost like a solemn decree. "He trusts you completely with his entire heart. But people like Masato Ren with breaking the relationship as hobby prey on small cracks, hesitation, and carelessness. The fact that you even allowed yourself to be drawn into a situation where you were alone in an empty room even by accident shows a dangerous vulnerability."
Rin took a half-step back, adjusting the strap of her leather bag over her shoulder.
"If you truly love Senpai, you must be far more careful from now on,." Rin said quietly, her eyes burning with an intense, noble fire.
"Be stronger. Do not give the shadows of this school a single inch of room to hurt him, or to tear your relationship apart. That is your duty as his partner."
Without waiting for a response, Rin offered Miyuki a final, crisp nod, turned around, and began walking down the moonlit street, her long golden hair shimmering under the ambient lamps.
Miyuki stood rooted to the spot, watching the golden-haired girl’s back recede slowly into the quiet night.
A profound, breathtaking realization bloomed deep within Miyuki’s soul.
Katsuragi Rin was not a villain. She was not a schemer or a homewrecker waiting for the chance to tear people apart.
She was a girl with a flawless noble heart. A person of absolute integrity who held herself and those around her to the highest possible standards. She didn't seek to destroy; she sought to protect what was genuine and good.
Miyuki closed her eyes, the vivid wind of her rooftop nightmare echoing in her ears once more.
*I understand now...*
Miyuki thought, a cold, solemn clarity washing over her whole being.
If Miyuki ever stumbled... if she ever succumbed to weakness, allowed her insecurities to blind her, or let a monster like Ren ruin her life... Rin would not stand idle and do nothing. Rin would be the very first person to step forward to save Takumi from the devastating heartbreak, and to pick up the shattered pieces of his life.
And if that happened... Rin would become the woman standing by Takumi’s side at Hanamichi Cafe. Rin would become the person who walked through life with him, holding his hand, sharing his dreams, and building the bright, beautiful future that was *supposed* to belong to her, Asahina Miyuki.
Not out of malice, of course, but because Miyuki would have proven herself unworthy of the precious gift she had been given.
Miyuki opened her eyes, turning her gaze toward the warm, welcoming light glowing above her front door.
She raised her left arm, looking at the braided silver-and-blue wristband resting against her skin. The tiny brass cherry blossom bell let out a soft, clear, resonant *chime* in the quiet night air, a sound that warded off evil, a sound that called her back to the truth.
Those dreams had never been nightmares, or the curse waiting to break her apart.
They were a mercy. A loud warning from the universe, screaming at her to wake up, to cherish the quiet warmth of the present, and to protect the boy who had offered to walk beside her through the rain for ten years.
Miyuki took a long, deep breath, gripped her house key firmly in her hand, and stepped through her front gate with absolute resolve.
