It will be okay
/Ouch./
Mary stared at the blank screen of her phone, waiting for... something. She felt lost, unable to identify her own emotions.
/That hurts./
It felt like the ground had crumbled beneath her, leaving her to fall into a dark and lonely place.
/I feel so empty./
The worst part was she felt relieved. A tear fell on her cheek.
/This is part of growing up, why am I crying? I knew this would happen./
They quickly turned into tears of anger.
/I didn’t even start all this. She messaged me first!/
Their “breakup”, the faux-kiss, the dinner party.
She tossed her phone away from her, receding into her arms; shrinking into the rejection.
/Why me?/
Her emotions had gotten the better of her. There had been a chance to undo the rejection, but she ended back at square one. Rejected yet again.
/I was being stupid, I thought we’d get back together. When we didn’t I just pretended it was all cool./
Her old habit of hiding her feelings got her, yet again.
Then, self consciousness arrived.
/Maybe I’m just unlovable./
She shrank further, beginning to identify all of her own faults, trying to find which one had ruined it for her.
“Hello.”
Mary felt the warmth of Kaede’s arms around her. She raised her head to see her deep brown eyes twinkling in earnest.
“I’m here.”
Mary began crying again, realizing she’d forgotten her.
“I- I’m sorry.”
Kaede wiped the tears from her cheeks with the sleeve of her Kimono
“It’s okay.”
“I’m just feeling sorry for myself, and not thinking of you. I shouldn’t be crying like this.”
“It’s normal to cry, and feel sad about things.”
“It’s just stuff that cannot be helped.”
For a while Kaede stroked her hair and they sat in silence. She only had an idea of what had happened, it really couldn’t be helped. Sometimes bridges were meant to be burnt.
“I know they’re your friends. I hope that isn’t ruined now.”
Kaede smiled.
“It will be okay.”
Mary was frowning despite her assurance.
“I don’t know how to even act. Rika and I aren’t even talking, so I can’t really just hang out with them.”
Kaede closed her eyes, finally aware what actually was happening.
“I’m not sure either to be honest. We might just have to feel it out.”
Kaede poked her cheek.
“Don’t worry about me though, I’m dating you. Not them.”
