Beautiful Dreams
Yuki sat on her lap, her arms around her, telling her about her youth on the farm, her yearning for the city, and her failure as a daughter.
Rika listened to every word just as she said she would.
Yuki finished her story, shame spread across her face. She threatened to break the eye contact they had had for the whole while.
As her eyes drifted Rika moved so she was always in front.
“There’s no need to look away.”
Sadness still spelled itself in Yuki’s expression.
“In that whole story you did nothing wrong.”
“Weren’t you listening though? I should be ashamed.”
Rika shook her head.
“You were a kid.”
Yuki began tearing up, and her voice began cracking.
“I tried so hard to fit in, but they called me a bumpkin and bullied me.”
Rika tucked her hair behind an ears.
“To make themselves feel better, by making you feel worse.”
“Some pretended to be my friends, just to leave.”
Tears began falling and Rika wipes them away.
“Their loss.”
Yuki was now talking through tears, her nose running.
“It was awful.”
She hugged Rika tightly. Rika could feel her tears soaking her T-shirt. She began stroking Yuki’s pitch black locks.
Through her sobs, Yuki could hear Rika’s heartbeat.
“I was so alone.”
Rika’s eyes grew brighter from the sunlight, her golden hair glowing like a halo.
“Not anymore.”
“I let everyone down, and now they all hate me.”
Rika’s locks fell along her shoulder and then over Yuki. She kissed the top of her head.
“Never.”
“I’m weak, and now I’m crying like a baby in front of you.”
“You’re the strongest person I know, it’s what allows you to cry.”
Yuki lifted her head up, her face stained by tears, she pushed away from Rika’s embrace. Her expression turned to anger.
“This is me. Why don’t you hate me now!?”
Rika’s expression didn’t change.
“Because, I love you.”
Yuki cried and yelled louder.
“How!? I’m a loser. Just a stupid bumpkin from the sticks who should be alone for the rest of my life.”
Tears began peaking from the corners of Rika’s eyes.
“And I’m an immature, gaijin, workaholic ****, who’s doomed to die alone because she can’t show her emotions.”
Tears began welling, blurring her blue eyes.
“And...”
Her voice began cracking.
“You’re the only person who accepts these things. The only person I can share my feelings with.”
She tried to hold back a sob, so her words made almost no sound.
“I love you, more than I’ve loved anyone. You’re **** perfect.”
Yuki’s anger quickly turned to guilt.
Rika slowly took her hands and interlocked their fingers.
“I was so **** scared when you called. I caused all of this, I should’ve told you, I knew I would lose you if I didn’t, but I was scared that you didn’t feel the same. And-“
Yuki reached out and held her hands Rika’s cheeks, she lead in close and their lips met.
Yuki spoke softly.
“I love you.”
“I’m sorry. I’m so sorry.”
“You didn’t cause anything.”
“If only-”
Yuki kissed her again.
“I won’t go anywhere.”
“You’re dreams...”
Their lips never parted.
“When you’re here, they’re beautiful.”
Words could only be spoken in short.
“Please don’t ever leave.”
As they kissed Yuki ran her fingers through Rika’s long curls.
“I only want beautiful dreams.”
Rika’s words were stuck on the tip of her tongue.
“I only want you.”
Rika’s voice was breathy and soft.
“I’ll always be here.”
They could both feel each other’s hearts beat in sync.
“Every time I go to sleep.”
Rika ran her fingers through Yuki’s velvet hair, darker than a moonless night.
“And every time you wake.”
Yuki kissed her again.
“What if you have to go.”
“Then I’ll come back.”
“What if you can’t.”
“Then I’ll bring you with me.”
“What if I can’t.”
“Then I won’t go.”
“Never.”
“Not once.
The sat, lips never apart, hearts as one. They did not move, did not separate. The world could have ended, and it would have been of no consequence.
