Rainy Day

This novel is being written in English, as I am American. I hope this doesn't deter anyone from reading it, but I understand if that's the case. I hope one day it can be properly translated so that everyone can enjoy it and fall in love with the characters as I have while writing it. ありがとうございます

It was raining; early-morning Tokyo sped by the train windows. Which, was packed with salary-men and women.

Yuki, being the height she was, couldn’t even see the windows beyond the sea of people. She held her umbrella and briefcase close as not to poke any of the passengers. Not being one for confrontation, she did her best to avoid it altogether.

A recorded voice rung out, alerting of the stop coming up. The doors slid open with a hush and the crowd being filing out onto the platform. Not that Yuki bothered looking around, she couldn’t help but wonder how many of them were her coworkers. She was never good with first days, or introductions, or friends. A trend that had followed her all the way from high school.

She opened her umbrella and began her walk to the company’s building. The front doors slid open, and she caught her breath. Standing near the elevators, there was woman with long light-brown hair, that was worn down and fell in long waves. She was staring down at her phone, but for a moment looked up and her and Yuki’s eyes met. Yuki quickly looked away and her face went flush. The woman’s eyes were bright Blue.

She looked back to the elevators, but the woman and other people that had been congregating had already entered the elevator.

“Ah! I’m going to be late!”

Yuki ran to the elevator, but the doors were already closing.

“No, no, no, no! Not on my first day!”

Suddenly, a hand stuck out from the elevator and stopped the doors. They slid open to reveal the woman from before, smiling.

Yuki walked into the elevator meekly, embarrassedly. The doors slid close.

“What floor are you going to?”

“Oh. Uh, 7.”

“Really? It looks like we work together.”

She blushed and stared at the floor, still holding her bag tightly.

“Um. That’s really cool.”

The woman continued the conversation, despite Yuki’s painfully obvious shyness.

“Is this your first day?”

“Yes. How did you guess?”

“I've never seen you before. Also, you were yelling as you ran towards the elevator.” She said with a smile.

“Oh, lol, thank you for holding the elevator.” She turned and bowed.

The woman was a little surprised at the gesture, reeling a bit.

“It’s no big deal, Newbie.”

At the same time, Yuki was biting her lip in frustration.

I actually just said “LOL” out loud!!!

“Lol”

She looked up, the woman had actually just said lol. However, she did so nonchalantly without looking away from her phones screen, but wore a knowing smirk. Yuki blushed again, she was actually pretty nice.

“Here’s our floor.”

The elevator doors opened, to a run-of-the-mill office.

“Oh! Before you go. Where is the conference room.”

“Back of the office on the left.”

“Thank you. Oh, and my name is Futaba Yuki. Please call me Yuki though.” She bowed again.

“No problem, Yuki.” She said with a smile. “I’m Rika Harrison. Please call me Rika.” She bowed as well. “If you’ll excuse me, I have to get started on some stuff.”

“Oh! Not at all.”

“See you around.” Rika turned and strode off.

Yuki smiled as she walked to the conference. Her first day had been going better than she had expected, she had her first work-friend. She pumped her fist, then quickly looked around to make sure no one was watching.

She entered the empty conference room and took a seat; set her bag and umbrella on the floor and tapped on the table, looking around.

Footsteps began approaching the door, and it opened. She took a deep breath, time to meet her supervisor, hopefully they were nice.

“Hello again.”

Yuki turned around to look at the door situated behind her.
