第五章 黯葬
「そんな……」
——ありえない。言葉は声にならなかった。
日本海溝の深度は八千メートル。しかし、計器が示す値は八千を超えていた。
数値と現実の境界が崩れる。
もはや何が真実なのか判然としない。
——私たちが海底だと信じていたものは、の場には存在しなかった。
雲のような何かを突き抜け無へと突き進んでいく。
操縦系統は完全に沈黙し、警報音も間延びしていく。
深度計の数値は八千二百を超え、やがて停止した。
それでも全身が感じていた。
なおも世界の中心へ進み続けている、と。
床下からの圧力だけが増し続け、骨の髄まで圧し潰されそうだった。
浮上の衝撃はついに訪れなかった。
コンソールには「NIERNU」——意味をなさない文字列が無機質に点滅している。
「なんなんだ……この表示……」
高槻の手が操縦桿から滑り落ちる。もはや成す術はないと、その背中が物語っていた。
外部カメラの映像は淡く揺れながら、ゆっくりと焦点を下げていく。
そこに在ったのは——
底知れぬ闇。
まるで宇宙の星雲が、海底に一滴の墨となって沈んでいるかのような、不定形の口。
それはブラックホールのような、
私たちの理屈も、時間も、光も、全てを呑み込む絶対的な口だった。
音も熱も、艦内の気圧さえも吸い取られていく。

金属の断末魔が船内に鈍く遅れて響く。
高槻が息を呑み、三田はロザリオを強く握り、額を伏せる。私は目を逸らすこともできない。
文明が死んでいく音。
人間の限界など遥かに超えた深度。
その全てを呑み込もうとする闇が静かに、確実に、私たちを見つめ返していた。

目が合った、と思った。
私たちは、黯に觸れたのだと。
視界がゆっくりと暗く沈んでいく。
その時——
なにかがふるりと身を捩り、世界を震わせた。
それは名もなき振動。
その余波だけが時の層を超えて広がっていく。
やがて、波の音。
そして、静寂。
それは一分後のことだった。
本土と母船YOKOHAMAとの通信は、何度試みてもついに回復しなかった。
母船の端末は断続的にログを送り続けていたが、その全ては届かないままだった。
——巨大なうねりが、私たちの外部を呑み込む音。
——地殻そのものが、悲鳴を上げる音。
——太古から眠る何かが、再び目を覚ます音。
その日は——
日本海溝大震災が発生した日だった。
しかし「日本海溝地震」という言葉がこれほどまでに、小さく感じられたことはなかった。
そしてYOKOHAMAが沈没する直前——
本土に向けて送信できたのは、SHINKAI-6501の最後のログただ一つだけ。
