第1話 : 学校に遅刻したら、犬の獣人と出会った？

この物語は、人間のミントの寝室から始まります。彼女が眠っている様子が見える中、ナイトスタンドの上で振動している目覚まし時計越しに、ニュースの声が聞こえてきます。
女性ニュースキャスター：さて、先ほどもお話しした通り、今日はグレートパインでこれまでで最も暑い日の一つになるでしょう――
男性ニュースキャスター：その通りだね、トリシャ！
女性ニュースキャスター： 今、チャンネルを合わせたばかりの方へ。トムが、私のレポート中に最も多く割り込んだという記録を更新しました。
ニュースキャスター（男性）：皆さん、ぜひ大自然を満喫して、この太陽を楽しんでくださいね！
ニュースキャスター（女性）：……ええ、彼の言う通りです。
ニュースが流れる間、ミントが起き上がり、遅刻に気づいてハッと息を呑み、髪を梳かす様子が見て取れる。ニュースの最後が突然途切れる中、彼女は部屋から飛び出し、階段を駆け下りながら両親に「行ってきます！」と叫ぶ。家のドアを開けると、最終バスがとっくに地平線の向こうへと消えていくのが見えた。
ミント（ため息）：やれやれ、走らないと遅刻しちゃう！
「行ってらっしゃい、ミント！」母親が、先ほど彼女に叫ばれた挨拶に返事をする。ミントは私道を歩きながら微笑んだ。
母親がドアを閉めると、新聞が彼女の頭上を飛び越え、芝生に落ちるのが見えた。
ミントは驚いて背筋を伸ばした。一人の少女が自転車のハンドルを切り、足を地面につけて急ブレーキをかけた。彼女は心配そうにミントを見つめた。
新聞配達少女：{ハッと息をのむ} ミント！ 君がいるのに気づかなかった！ いつもならもう学校に行ってる時間じゃないの？
ミント（顔を赤らめて）：うん、寝坊しちゃったの。遅れての参加だけど、みんな気にしないといいな。
新聞配達少女：大丈夫よ。みんなあなたのこと大好きだし。今朝、私の配達ルートで、ニュースであなたの「自然体験旅行」の話を聞いたばかりよ。
ミント（目を輝かせて）：えっ？ まさか！
新聞配達少女：うん、あなたがどうのこうのって話してたの――
ミント（叫びながらすでに走り去る）：待って、アシャ！放課後に全部詳しく教えてね！でも今は急いでるから！
新聞配達少女（ニヤリと笑う）：もちろん！良い一日を！
やがて、ミントは疲れ果てて走り止まる。グレートパインの多くの森の小道の一つを近道しようと試みるが、すぐに道に迷ってしまう。
ミント：この町、こんなに広かったなんて知らなかった。
背後の茂みからざわめきが聞こえる。ハッと息を呑んで振り返り、ミントは攻撃態勢をとる。
ミント：誰だ？ 私、空手2年習ったんだぞ！
ざわめきは茂みの頂上へと移り、毛むくじゃらの手が伸びて茂みを分け開いた。
顔を上げると、ミントは子猫と目と目を合わせた。
ミント：おっと、ごめん！
ミントはびくっとして後ずさり、顔を上げると、猫を抱いているのは大きな犬のような哺乳類だった。
トレント：おっ、やあ、どうした？
ミント：わあ！ 君、犬みたいな哺乳類だ！ こんなの見たことない！
トレント：ああ、えっと……もう弟を撫でるのはやめてくれない？
ミント：えっと、おい……これ、猫だよ。
トレント：ああ、兄貴が呪われて猫になっちゃったんだ。俺はトレント、こっちはイオだ。
トレントはそう言いながら、猫を掲げた。猫は「ニャー」と鳴き、間抜けな顔をした。
ミント（不気味なほどにニヤリと笑って）：ミント！ えっと、僕はミント。
トレント：いいね。で、その……
不気味な雰囲気に戸惑ったトレントは歩き出し、ミントは会話を続けながら後をついていく。
ミント：待って、じゃあ誰が彼に呪いを……
ちょうどその時、闇の化け物が森の空き地に入り込み、襲いかかってきた。トレントは魔法を使って、ミントと猫の両方を木の上の安全な場所へ運び上げた。
ミント：魔法が使えるの？！
トレント：ああ、ほら、ここにいて。ここは安全だ。
ミントがうなずくと、トレントと怪物は戦い始める。トレントはいくつかの魔法攻撃を繰り出すが、怪物は爪を使うだけのように見える。戦いを眺めていたミントの目を、一筋の光が眩ませる。光が消えると、トレントの髪と服が変わっていた。怪物は彼の突然の魔力に目をくらませられ、退却したようだ。トレントは微笑んでミントに近づく。
ミント：これ、何？
トレント：ある種の魔法の変身だよ。
その瞬間、モンスターがトレントの背後に現れ、彼を倒した。ミントは恐怖に震えながらその様子を見守っていた。
ミント：トレント！
ミントが叫ぶと、一筋の光が彼女を包み込み、やがて森全体を包み込んだ。魔法少女のような変身が起き、トレントを変身させたのと同じ魔法がミントにも宿ると、彼女は戸惑った様子を見せた。怒りに目を輝かせたミントは戦いの場へ駆け寄り、モンスターを押し返した。トレントは畏敬と驚きに満ちた眼差しで彼女を見つめ、声援を送った。
トレント：それ……すごかった！
ミント（元の姿に戻りながら）：あれも、何か変身魔法みたいなものだったの？
トレント：ああ、そう言えるかもね。でも、人間がそんなことするのを目にしたのは初めてだよ。
ミント：うーん…私は普通の人間とは違うから、たぶんそれが理由ね。
トレント（くすくす笑う）：ああ、そうかもな……
{気まずい沈黙}
ミント：で、君たち、泊まる場所はあるの？ うちに来ない？
トレント：どうかな、イオはどう思う？
イオは無邪気な表情で、トレントの頭からビーニーをポンと叩き落とす。
「それってイエスってことだね！」トレントは笑いながら言う。二人は一緒にその場を去り、彼らの今後がどうなるかはまた別の話だ。
Our story begins in Mint's room. As we see her sleeping, the news can be heard over her alarm clock, which vibrates on the nightstand.
News Reporter (female): So, as I was saying, today will surely be one of Great Pine's hottest yet-
News Reporter (male): You could say that again, Trisha!
News Reporter (female): And for those of you just tuning in, Tom just broke his record for most interruptions during my report.
News reporter (male): So folks, be sure to take in the great outdoors, and try to enjoy that sun!
News reporter (female): ...Yeah, what he said.
Over the course of the news, Mint can be seen getting up, gasping as she realized she was late, and combing her hair. The last of the news abruptly cuts out as she bursts out of her room, running down the stairs and yelling goodbye to her parents. As she opens the door to her house, she can see the final bus has long since passed the horizon's crest.
Mint (sighing): Great, I've gotta run or I'll be late!
"Goodbye, Mint!" Her mother calls, returning the greeting yelled at her earlier. Mint smiles while walking down her driveway.
As her mother closes the door, a newspaper can be seen flying past her head, landing on her lawn.
Mint straightens herself, shocked. A girl swerves her bicycle and lowers her feet as it grinds to a stop. She looks as Mint, concerned.
Papergirl: {Gasp} Mint! I didn't even see you! Aren't you usually at school by now?
Mint (blushing): Yeah, I overslept. I hope everyone doesn't mind a late entrance.
Papergirl: I'm sure they're fine. Everyone there loves you, just this morning on my route, I heard the news mention YOUR Wilderness Trip.
Mint (With stars in her eyes): WHAT? No way!
Papergirl: Yep, they were talking about how you-
Mint (already running away as she yells): Wait, Asha, you've gotta tell me all the details afterschool but for now I've gotta run!
Papergirl (grinning): Course! Have a nice day!
Eventually, Mint stops running as she gets tired. She tries to take a shortcut through one of Great Pine’s many forest trails, quickly finding herself lost.
Mint: I never realized how big this town actually was.
A rustling can be heard from the bushes behind her. Gasping and turning around, Mint assumes an offensive pose.
Mint: Who’s there? I took 2 whole years of karate!
The rustling travels to the top of the bushes, as a furry hand reaches out and parts them.
Beginning to look up, Mint comes face to face with a kitten.
Mint: Whoops, sorry!
Mint flinches, moving backwards and looking up, to see the person holding the cat is a large, dog mammalian.
Trent: Oh hey, what’s up?
Mint: Woah! You’re a dog mammalian! I’ve never seen one like you before!
Trent: Yeah, um… Can you stop petting my brother now?
Mint: Uh, dude… This is a cat.
Trent: Yep, my brother was cursed and turned into one. I’m Trent, and this is Io.
Trent held up the cat as he said that last part. It meows, making a derpy face.
Mint (smiling creepily wide): Mint! Uh, I’m Mint.
Trent: Cool. Any way...
Trent, weirded out, begins to walk away, Mint continuing the conversation and trailing behind.
Mint: Wait, so who cursed hi-
Just then, a dark creature enters the forest clearing and begins attacking. Trent uses his magic to carry both Mint and the cat to safety in a tree.
Mint: You can USE MAGIC?!
Trent: Yes, now stay here, it’s safe.
Mint nods as Trent and the creature begin fighting. Trent uses several magical attacks while the creature seems to merely use its claws. A ray of light blinds Mint, who was watching the battle. Emerging from it, Trent’s hair and clothes have changed. The creature is blinded by his sudden magical energy, seemingly retreating. He smiles and approaches Mint.
Mint: What’s this?
Trent: It’s a sort of magical transformation.
Just then, the monster appears behind Trent, knocking him down while Mint looks on, horrified.
Mint: Trent!
Mint cries out as a ray of light engulfs her and then the entire forest. Mint appears confused as a sort of magical girl style transformation occurs, imbuing her with the same magic that just transformed Trent. Mint’s eyes form glow with anger as she rushes to the fight, pushing the monster back. Trent stares in awe and amazement, cheering her on.
Trent: That… was awesome!
Mint (transforming back to normal): So was that some kind of transformation magic as well?
Trent: Yeah, I guess you could say so. Although I’ve never seen a human do something like that.
Mint: Yeah well… I’m not like most humans, so that’s probably why.
Trent (chuckling): yeah maybe…
{awkward silence}
Mint: So like, do you guys have a place to stay? Do you wanna like, come over?
Trent: I dunno, what do you think, Io?
Io knocks the beanie off his head with an innocent look.
“I guess that's a yes!” Trent says laughing. The two depart together, and that is the end of chapter 1.
