『さまよえるオランダ人』伝説の初出と見られる印刷物(1790)の抄訳をお目にかけよう。この本は電子書籍を無料で読める有難いことになっている。しかしオランダ人伝説は276ページの一部に、これだけしかないようだ。

legends of Aarne-Thompson-Uther type 777" に拠り、その原文を萩原が探して写したものである。氏の研究なくして本項は成らなかった。

天候は非常に荒れており、船員たちはさまよえるオランダ人を見たと言う程であった。よく聞かれる話では、このオランダ人は悪天候に苦しみケープにやって来て、港に入ろうとしたのだが、船を誘導できる水先案内人を得ることができず、道に迷った。以来、大時化に遭ったとき、その船の幻が現れるという。しくじり者共が空想するに、その船に呼びかけたならば、彼女は他人のように答えるであろうと。
The weather was so stormy, that the sailors said they saw the flying Dutchman. The common story is, that this Dutchman came to the Cape in distress of weather, and wanted to get into harbour, but could not get a pilot to conduct her, and was lost ; and that ever since, in very bad weather, her vision appears. The failurs fancy that if you would hail her, she would answer like another vessel.
