タイムエイジマシンって？
“The Time so and so Machine. So what?”
で、タイム何とかマシンって一体何？
Then I looked at the big box again carefully.
それからぼくは、その箱をじっと見た
There was a curtain covering nearly three quarters of the front side
箱の前の四分の三はカーテンがあり
and it seemed I could get in.
そこから中には入れそうだった
On the remaining quarter of the front side was an instruments panel
残りの四分の一は計器盤で
with a lot of meters and switches.
たくさんのメーターやスイッチがあった
I understood immediately that it had to be an elaborate machine.
それを見て、ぼくはすぐに、それが手の込んだすごい機械だと分かった
Then, Doc said,
すると先生は
“This really is a fantastic machine
こいつは素晴らしい機械 なんだ
and it took many years to complete.
完成までに長い時間がかかった
Well, why don’t you get in?”
どうだ、中に入ってみるか？
So I opened the curtain and gingerly went into the box.
それでぼくはカーテンを開け、おそるおそる中に入った
“There is only a mirror and a chair, Doc.”
先生、中は鏡と椅子だけじゃん
Then I sat on the chair and closed the curtain.
それからぼくは椅子に座りカーテンを締めた
“I guess we can take passport ID photos or something like that.”
どうせパスポートか何かの証明写真だろ
“Keep on watching the mirror.
いいか、鏡を見ていろ！
You will really be astonished!”
まさにぶったまげるからな
“Really?”
本当？
“By the way, how old are you?”
で、お前さんはいくつだ？
“I’m seventeen. I’m a high school sophomore.”
１７歳だよ。高校二年生
“Then, tell me any number from zero to sixteen.”
それでは、ゼロから１７までの任意の数字を言え
“Zero to sixteen, why?”
ゼロから１７？ で？
”Just tell me!”
いいからいいから
“Ahh, fifteen.”
じゃ１５
“Fifteen? It’s unsatisfactory!”
１５じゃ物足りない
“Unsatisfactory? Then make it ten.”
物足りない？ じゃ、１０は？
“Why you are so passive?
どうしてお前さんはそう消極的なんだ？
You must be more daring!”
もっと大胆に！
“Daring? OK, seven.”
積極的？ じゃ７
“It must be, well…it must be five!”
そうだなぁ、よし！ それじゃ５にしよう！
“You should have decided the number yourself!”
だったら数字、自分で決めればよかったじゃん！
“Hold your tongue!
黙れ！
Now I guarantee, you will be thoroughly astonished.
いいか、これからお前さんが、完璧にぶったまげることを請合おう
Keep watching the mirror carefully in front of you!”
