We went back to Doc’s laboratory
茶トラ先生の実験室にもどり
and were going to continue the strategy meeting.
作戦会議を続けた
But I remembered by chance that
だけどそのとき、ぼくは偶然に、あることを思い出した
Doc was going to the Physical Society meeting
茶トラ先生は物理学会に出席予定だった
from August 24th.
８月２４日から
This meant that

there had to be ‘Doc’ in his house
もう一人の茶トラ先生がいるはずだ
who was ‘living’ on August 23rd.
８月２３日の
So I asked him,
それでぼくは言った
“Well, I wander if you run into ‘Doc’
もし自分に出くわしたらどうするの？

“It’s quite OK
ぜんぜん問題ない
since I’m always sleeping soundly in my bed
わしはベッドでぐーぐー寝ておる
on the second floor
二階で
until one o’clock in the afternoon.”
午後一時まで
“Oh, I see.
そうなんだ
By the way, shall I look for the bat?
ところで、バットを探してあげようか
You can try the ‘Time paradox’ once again!”
もう一度バットで殴り殺す実験やってみる？

状況は大体つかんだ

そうだ お前さんの親父さんは飛行機を飛ばしておった

グレーのビジネススーツを着て
“I understand. But there are only the black suits you painted for the wake.”
分かったよ だけどスーツはお通夜で着た塗装した喪服だけだろう？
“Well, I have another but…”
もう一つある だが…
“Ah, that’s good. So what’s the color?”
そうか よかったね で、何色？
“It’s dark brown stripes on yellow.
黄色にこげ茶のストライプだ
I’ll go to the Physical Society wearing it.”
これは物理学会に着ていく予定だ
“Wow! It’s the color of a brown tabby cat! It’s cool!”
茶トラ猫カラーじゃん！ イカしてる！
“But I don’t want to paint it in any color
だがそれだけは塗り替えたくない
since it so splendid.”
お気に入りなのだ
“Well I see. And it must be a serious problem.
分かったよ だけどこれって重大な問題だね
Then, shall we go to a tailor?”
それなら紳士服屋へ行く？
“Such wasteful spending!”
そんな無駄遣いなんて！
“I think so too.”
それもそうだよね
“OK. Take off the suit.”
そうだ そのスーツを脱げ
“You’ll paint this?”
これを塗装するの？
“Certainly.”
