14 紫のカシミア蝶
蝶に準え、美人の運命が語られる。
紫の翅に乗り舞い上がるのは
東洋の春の昆虫の女王か、
As rising on its purple wing
The insect-queen of eastern spring,
エメラルド色のカシミール草原上空
近くの若い追っ手を誘う、
O'er emerald meadows of Kashmeer
Invites the young pursuer near,
花から花へと引っ張り廻して
無駄に暇かけ草臥れ儲け、
And leads him on from flower to flower
A weary chase and wasted hour,
遂に去る、空高々と舞い上がる、
残るは若者、涙にくれ心臓鐘打つ。
Then leaves him, as it soars on high,
With panting heart and tearful eye:
さる程に美人は成長した子供を惹きつけ、
鮮やかな容色と気まぐれな翼もて
So beauty lures the full-grown child,
With hue as bright, and wing as wild:
希望と恐怖を追い求め、
愚行に始まり、涙にくれて。
A chase of idle hopes and fears,
Begun in folly, closed in tears.
捕まれば、裏切りの罪に等しい、
蝶よ乙女よ待つは災い。
If won, to equal ills betrayed,
Woe waits the insect and the maid;
針の筵に座るのか、茨の道を歩くのか、
幼児の遊びから人の気まぐれから。
A life of pain, the loss of peace,
From infant's play and man's caprice:
猛烈に求められた可愛い玩具も
捕らえられては魅力半減も良いところ、
The lovely toy so fiercely sought
Hath lost its charm by being caught,
とどめようとして触るその都度
擦り落とされる鮮やか過ぎる鱗粉も、
For every touch that wooed its stay
Hath brushed its brightest hues away,
魅惑色合い美しさが逝かないうちに
飛んで逃げるか、独り堕ちるかに。
Till charm, and hue, and beauty gone,
‘Tis left to fly or fall alone.
傷ついた翅、あるいは血を流す胸。
どこで休めと、犠牲者何れ？
With wounded wing, or bleeding breast,
Ah! Where shall either victim rest?
この色褪せた風切羽で出来ようか、
バラからチューリップへと、以前のようには？
Can this with faded pinion soar
From rose to tulip as before?
あるいは美人、一刻のうちに萎れ窶れた、
彼女お楽しみか、壊れた東屋と化した？
Or beauty, blighted in an hour,
Find joy within her broken bower?
有り得ぬ、まだ元気な虫たち傍に飛び交うは
決してせぬ、死にゆく者に翅を垂れ瞑するなどは。

可愛い顔して、慈悲を示すは
しくじり全て、自分のもの以外には
And lovelier things have mercy shown
To every failing but their own,
涙の一滴くらいは災難すべてに
道を踏み外した姉妹の恥辱は別として。
And every woe a tear can claim
Except an erring sister's shame.
The insect-queen:紫の翅というと、コムラサキ？ポリドリ『吸血鬼』でカシミヤ蝶とされた。コールリッジの註釈に拠れば、詩人はクレアモント嬢に、"that blue-winged Kashmirian butterfly of book-learning."…つまり「本で読んだ青い翅のカシミア蝶」と答えた(The Works Of Lord Byron, Vol. 3 注[82])。現地で見た訳ではなく、カシミールに居るという蝶を想像して書いたものらしい。その本というのが変人W.ベックフォードの奇譚 "Vathek" だったようで
... but her course was as difficult to follow as the flight of one of those beautiful blue butterflies of Cashmere , which are at once so volatile and rare .
という一節があった（プロジェクト・グーテンベルクによるhttps://www.gutenberg.org/ebooks/42401）。S.Henryによる同書のNotesには
Butterflies of Cashmere. The same insects are celebrated in an unpublished poem of Mesihi, another of the MSS. mentioned in the preface. Sir Antony Shirlie relates that it was customary in Persia“to hawke after butterflies with sparrows made to that use, and stares.” It is perhaps to this amusement that our author alludes in the context.

Byron praises “Vathek” for its correctness of costume, beauty of description, and power of imagination . “As an Eastern tale,” he says, “even Rasselas must bow before it; his Happy Valley will not bear a comparison with the Hall of Eblis."
とあり、バイロン卿は『ヴァテック』を高く評価している。これがネタ元なら、教主を異教徒が地獄に落とす『ヴァテック』の筋書が、バイロン卿『異教徒』に引き継がれたのではないか。
青い蝶ということなら、インド一帯に住む Junonia orithya という種があり、Blue Pansy と呼ばれている。画像はWikipediaから。
