場面は変わり、舟の主から
人の来る足音は聞こえながら、
挨拶の声は耳に届かないから。
もっと…ターバン各々区別つくほど
近くに、銀の鞘履くアタガンも。
I hear the sound of coming feet,
But not a voice mine ear to greet;
More near - each turban I can scan,
And silver-sheathed ataghan;
その最前列に見えるは
緑の衣纏える…君侯か。
「や！お主、何者？」 「この身を屈める額手こそは、
モスレム信徒にありますべき返礼なれば。」
The foremost of the band is seen
An Emir by his garb of green:
‘Ho! Who art thou?' - ‘This low salam
Replies of Moslem faith I am.'
「はなはだ柔らかくお持ちになるお荷物、
よくよく気を遣うものとお見受けする、
何やらお大事の御進物遊ばすに違いなし、
我が慎ましき小舟もて、喜びお待ち申しましょう。」
‘The burden ye so gently bear,
Seems one that claims your utmost care,
And, doubtless, holds some precious freight,
My humble bark would gladly wait.'
「ウムよう言うた。汝が小舟解き放て。
即ち音なき岸辺より我等送り出せ。
イヤ、帆は畳んだままにして、
四散せる櫂の手近を取り漕ぎ出せ。
かの眠れる岩の中腹に
水路の水も暗く深い。
‘Thou speakest sooth; thy skiff unmoor,
And waft us from the silent shore;
Nay, leave the sail still furled, and ply
The nearest oar that's scattered by,
And midway to those rocks where sleep
The channeled waters dark and deep.
さて休むがよい、 …かくも勇ましき業に。
如何にも、恙無く速やかに来たり。
これ然し、永きも長い船旅ならん、
あれなるは……」

Of course had been right swiftly run;

garb of green:中世ヨーロッパに於ける緑は、道化・子供・恋人・勢子・回教徒くらいしか着ない、まともではない服装であったのに対し、イスラム教より古くからアラブに伝わる聖人ヒドゥルal-Khidr「緑の人」は常に緑衣を纏い、不死・永遠・再生の象徴とされた
