年寄り船乗りの歌 第2部 THE RIME OF THE ANCIENT MARINER.PART THE SECOND.
船は南極から北上し、天候は回復する。しかし、風のない「静かの海」（赤道無風帯？）に入ってしまい、渇きに悩まされ、怪異を見るに至る。本作に於て有名な一節
Water, water, everywhere,
And all the boards did shrink;
Water, water, everywhere,
Nor any drop to drink.
も、この部分に含まれる。
今や太陽右舷から上る、
海の下から現れる。
霧に隠れて左舷に進み
かの海の中へと没する。
The Sun now rose upon the right:
Out of the sea came he,
Still hid in mist, and on the left
Went down into the sea.
ついて行くべき鳥はなし、
南風未だに後ろから推すも
餌やり遊ぶ日とてなく
乗組員が呼んで来る事も！
And the good south wind still blew behind,
But no sweet bird did follow,
Nor any day for food or play
Came to the mariners' hollo!
そして地獄を見る事になる、
皆に災難の種と思われる事に。
全員断言、殺してしまったあの鳥が
風を吹かせていたのだと。
クソッ！皆言った、屠った鳥こそ
風を吹かせていたのだと！
And I had done an hellish thing,

That made the breeze to blow.

暗くもなく赤くもなく、神の後光の如く、
栄光の太陽が復活果たすと。
あっさり全員翻し、殺した鳥は
霧や靄を齎したものと。
違いない、と皆言った、そんな鳥は屠れ、
霧や靄を齎すものはと。
Nor dim nor red, like God's own head,
The glorious Sun uprist:
Then all averred, I had killed the bird
That brought the fog and mist.
'Twas right, said they, such birds to slay,

晴れの風が吹き、白く飛沫が飛び、
航跡は尾を引き、離れて消えた。
我等が初めてだったらしい、
その静かの海に飛び込んだのは。
The fair breeze blew, the white foam flew,
The furrow stream'd off free:
We were the first that ever burst
Into that silent sea.
風が止んでしまう、帆は垂れ下がる。
こいつは実に最低に最低。
ひたすら話すはただ耐え難く
あまりにもしんとした海に！
Down dropt the breeze, the sails dropt down,
'Twas sad as sad could be;
And we did speak only to break
The silence of the sea!
何もかも熱く、空は銅色にして、
血の赤さの太陽が、正午になり
帆柱真上に居座るのだが、
それが満月より大きくはない。
All in a hot and copper sky,
The bloody Sun, at noon,
Right up above the mast did stand,
No bigger than the Moon.
来る日も来る日も、来る日も来る日も、
一そよぎもなく身動ぎもせず立ち往生。
役立たずなこと絵に描いた船が
絵に描いた海に浮かぶよう。
Day after day, day after day,
We stuck, nor breath nor motion,
As idle as a painted ship
Upon a painted ocean.

板は縮み反るまで乾き。

飲み水だけが一滴もなし。

途方もない腐れよう。おお神よ！
未だかつて無い代物！
スライム状のものが足で這う
スライム状の海の上を！
The very deep did rot: O Christ!
That ever this should be!
Yea, slimy things did crawl with legs
Upon the slimy sea.
ゆらりゆらりと輪になり不穏に
夜には群れなす鬼火が踊る。
水は魔女の油のよう、
焦げた緑に、青くも白く。

全員の舌はすっかり渇き、
その根から枯れてしまう。
話すこともままならず、
煤で窒息したかのよう。
And every tongue, through utter drought,
Was wither'd at the root;
We could not speak, no more than if
We had been choak'd with soot.
いや、何たる一日！老いも若きも
どんな悪人に俺は見えたのだ！
十字架代わりに、かの信天翁を
この首に掛けやがったのだ。
Ah! well a-day! what evil looks
Had I from old and young!

silent sea :風がなく音もしない死の海のイメージは、サルガッソ海の伝説を持ち込んだとしか思えない。無風に悩まされるサルガッソー海の存在については既にコロンブスが報告している(1492)。しかし実際には、Thomas A. Janvier:In the Sargasso Sea(1898)以下、小説に取り上げられ死の海サルガッソーの伝説が広まったのが20世紀に入る頃、本作当時の評判は不明。
どうやらサルガッソ海というより、赤道無風帯または熱帯収束帯 Intertropical Convergence Zone と呼ばれる海域の経験から来ているようだ。redbull.com が公開している動画のページがある。
No bigger than the Moon.:何故か唐突に出てくる月のことが、後に意味を持ってくる。
boards :船の板材という以外に、「舷」「航程」「会議」「集団」と様々な意味を持つ。
slimy :「ヌルヌルした」というような意味合いだったが、今となっては。
death-fires :will o' the wisp の1種。正体不明
