Christine Was A Serious And Hardworking Student（真面目で勉強熱心なクリスティーン）
今回は物語です。
正直言うと、筆者は英語が嫌いです。
より正確に言うと、日本語の会話にすぐ英語を混ぜて気取ったりする、英語大好き人種が嫌いなんです。
別に英語って特別に高級な言語じゃありませんよね！
この短編集は、実はある必要に迫られて創った物語を集めたものです。
Christine was a very serious and hardworking student. But unfortunately she caught a bad cold just a week before the final exam of her junior year in college. She wasn’t a bit prepared.
On the very day of the examination, she took her seat in the classroom, stared at the test booklet, which consisted of “yes / no” type questions. She was all at a loss what to do, and closed her eyes just for a short while. But then, all of a sudden, a fit of inspiration hit her. She quickly took a coin out of her purse, and started tossing it and marking the answer sheet － “Yes” for heads and “No” for tails.
Within half an hour, she was all done. The rest of the class were still working.
Yet, during the last few minutes, Christine was seen desperately throwing the coin, sweating and sweating.
A professor, alarmed, approached her and asked what was going on.
She said, “I finished the exam in half an hour. Now I’m rechecking my answers for the fourth time. Each time different answers come out …”
Poor Christine. She was very serious and hardworking.
クリスティーンは真面目な、勉強熱心な学生であった。しかし運の悪いことに、ある時、ひどい風邪をひいてしまい、全く試験の準備ができなかった。それは大学２年生の最終試験の１週間前であった。
試験のまさに当日、教室で席に座り、問題用紙を見つめる。それは〇×式の問題で構成されていた。途方に暮れて、ちょっとのあいだ目を閉じた。しかし、その時突然にひらめいた。彼女は急いで財布からコインを取り出し、それを投げて問題に答えていった ― 表が出れば 〇、裏が出れば × である。
３０分もしない内に、全ての問題に答え終わった。他の生徒は皆、まだ解答中だ。
しかしながら、テストの最後の数分に至ってもまだ、彼女は汗を大量にかきながら必死にコインを投げていた。教授は不審に思って彼女の所へ行き、何をしているのかと尋ねた。すると彼女は言った。
「３０分でテストは終わったんですけど、答え合わせをしているんです。もう４回目です。困ったことに、毎回、違った答えが出るから、何度も何度も答え合わせを繰り返さなくてはならなくて……」
可哀そうなクリスティーン。真面目で勉強熱心な娘。
