English Is A Strange Language.（英語って変な言語）

今回は会話です。

Mr. A: English is a strange language.

Ms. B: Yes, every language is strange from some point of view. And how strange is English?

Mr. A: For example, there’s no egg in an eggplant, and no ham in a hamburger.

Ms. B: Interesting. We usually take English for granted, but there are many paradoxes.

Mr. A: English muffins were not invented in England. French fries were not invented in France. We call it a boxing “ring,” but it’s square.

Ms. B: I’ve never thought about that.

Mr. A: How can weather be as hot as hell on one day, and as cold as hell on another? If the plural of “tooth” is “teeth,” why shouldn’t the plural of “phone booth” be “phone beeth”?

Ms. B: I guess that’s because English was invented by people, not computers. It reflects the creativity of the human race.

Mr. A: You don’t mean a “track race” or “car race,” do you?

Ms. B: Of course not.

Mr. A: 英語って変な言語だと思うね。

Ms. B: どこの国の言葉だって、ある意味変なものだと思うけど。それで，英語はどう変だって言うの？

Mr. A: 例えばナスは e(・)g(・)g(・)plant って言うけど、卵（e(・)g(・)g(・)）は入ってないじゃないか。それに、ハンバーガー（h(・)a(・)m(・)burger）にもハム（h(・)a(・)m(・)）が入ってるわけじゃないしさ。

Ms. B: 面白いわね。私たちはふつう当たり前に考えて、気にもかけないけど、考えてみればたくさんの矛盾があるわ。

Mr. A: イングリッシュ・マフィンだってイギリスで出来たわけじゃないし、フレンチ・フライもフランスで出来たものじゃない。ボクシングの「リング」って言うけど、丸じゃなくて四角じゃないか。

Ms. B: そんな風に考えたこともなかったわ。

Mr. A: 天気だってなぜある日は「地獄みたいに暑い」のに、別の日は今度は「地獄みたいに寒い」なんて言うんだろう？歯（to(・)o(・)th）の複数形が te(・)e(・)th なら、電話ボックス（phone bo(・)o(・)th）の複数形は phone be(・)e(・)th のはずなのに、なぜそうならないんだろう？

Ms. B: あのね、それは多分英語を作ったのがコンピューターじゃなくて人間だからよ。人類（the human r(・)a(・)c(・)e(・)）の創造性の反映なのよ。

Mr. A: raceって、陸上競技（track r(・)a(・)c(・)e(・)）やカーレース（car r(・)a(・)c(・)e(・)）の意味で言っているんじゃないよね？

Ms. B: 何言ってるの！もちろん違うわよ。
