Episode 1: “The Night the Sky Turned Red”
A high school boy lived in a quiet rural town in Jpan.
His name was Soma Amagi.
“All right, that’s it for today’s class.”
As soon as the lesson ended, one of his friends walked up to him.
“Hey, Amagi, did you see that teacher? Isn’t she cute?”
Soma laughed and replied casually.
“You’re always talking about stuff like that.”
The two of them burst out laughing. It was just another ordinary moment at school.
After homeroom, Soma headed home with his friend.
“So anyway—”
While his friend was talking, Soma noticed the sky.
It looked red.
(The sky is red… what’s that about?)
Strangely enough, whenever misfortune was about to happen, the sky always seemed to turn red.
“Huh? Amagi? You okay?”
“Ah—yeah, I’m fine.”
Convincing himself it was just his imagination, Soma kept walking.
“See you tomorrow!”
They parted ways, and Soma headed home alone.
“Welcome back, Soma. Dinner’s ready.”
“Soma! It’s curry today—your favorite!”
His mother and father were waiting for him at home.
“I’m home. I’ll eat in a second.”
The three of them sat down at the table together.
“Today at school, Tanaka kept saying, ‘Isn’t that teacher cute?’ He’s really like that all the time.”
“Hahaha! Tanaka-kun sounds funny—just like me when I was younger!”
“He even says I’m cute in public. It’s embarrassing.”
“Dad, you really did that?!”
“Your mom and I love each other, so it’s fine!”
“You really say that in front of your son?”
It was a peaceful dinner.
Then suddenly, the lights went out.
“Oh? A power outage?”
As his mother spoke, his father stood up.
“I’ll go check the breaker.”
He headed toward it—
And at that moment, the sound of shattering glass echoed through the house.
“The window?!”
Then his father shouted.
“H-Hey! Who are you?! An intruder?! Call the poli—”
A disturbing sound cut him off.
Slowly, the lights came back on.
“Da—”
A monstrous figure was holding what remained of his father’s body.
“Dad… what… is this…?”
In an instant, the creature turned on his mother.
“Soma—!”
Her body collapsed unnaturally. The creature did not stop.
That attack took her life.
It all happened in seconds.
His parents lay motionless. The air was filled with the smell of blood.
Soma trembled, unable to move.
“Ugh…!”
He vomited. It was far too much for an ordinary high school student to endure.
“You’re next… young… looks tasty…”
The creature stepped closer to Soma.
It reached out and touched his face.
“That’s a nice face… makes me want to ruin it…”
Then, pain exploded through him.
Along with the agony, not only the vision in his right eye vanished—
but his ordinary life disappeared as well.
“Aaagh!”
Soma screamed. The creature laughed with clear delight.
“No one’s coming to save you… how pathetic…”
I’m next.
Just as that thought crossed his mind—
A blade pierced straight through the creature’s neck.
“W-Who…?”
Standing there was a tall man in his early twenties, holding a Japanese sword.
“Explanations later. This place is dangerous. Run.”
He grabbed Soma and fled.
“Don’t let them escape!”
More creatures appeared in their path.
Without a word, the man cut them down and continued running.
After what felt like forever, Soma was brought to a shelter.
(This… has to be a dream… right?)
He couldn’t believe it. He didn’t want to believe it.
Even in a safe place, the memories and sensations came back, and he vomited again.
“…I’m going to treat your wounds. Stay still.”
The swordsman calmly began first aid.
Still in shock, Soma forced himself to speak. He needed answers to survive.
“Um… who are you?”
“I’m Kei Himuro. A B-rank member of the Kadan Corps.”
“Kadan… Corps?”
“An organization that hunts Marei.”
“Marei…?”
After being asked repeatedly, Kei sighed.
“This is why ignorance is a pain. If you can’t understand, stay quiet. The situation comes first.”
Soma felt anger rise within him.
“My family was just killed. And that’s how you talk to someone who asks a question?”
“So what? That doesn’t matter. This is an extreme situation. People who can’t fight shouldn’t step forward.”
Soma fell silent. He realized arguing was pointless.
“Still… I’m the only one who can fight. One B-rank… this is bad.”
“B-rank…?”
“You don’t need to know.”
Soma sat down in the shelter, trying to calm himself.
(The Marei won’t come here… I’m safe now…)
He told himself that, yet his heartbeat and trembling wouldn’t stop.
“Listen. From now on, you—”
Before Kei could finish, the shelter’s window shattered.
“Uuugh…”
A Marei appeared.
“Tch.”
Kei’s expression hardened. People screamed. Soma shook in fear.
“So… I’m the only one who can fight.”
“W-Wait! I’ll fight too!”
Soma shouted without thinking.
But the moment he tried to move, memories flooded back—
His parents’ deaths. Losing his eye.
Overwhelmed by trauma, he vomited again.
“Amateur. Stay back!”
Kei shoved Soma away.
(Damn it… I’m completely useless… I can’t fight… I can’t help anyone…)
Suddenly, an attack flew toward him.
It was right in front of his eyes.
(This is bad… I’m—)
A single slash cut it apart.
“Not happening. I’ll take you on, monster.”
The Marei fired a beam, but Kei sliced through it.
A violent gust of wind burst forth from his blade.
“That was… wind… from his sword…?”
Soma could only stare at his back.
That was his reality.
