Misunderstood Heart: I Was Ready to Confess… Until a Heartbreaking Sight Changed Everything.
"Love is never simple, especially when misunderstandings get in the way. Just when I gathered the courage to confess, I saw something that shattered my heart. Was it really what it seemed, or was my love lost in a moment of confusion? This is a story of emotions, second guesses, and the fragile line between truth and assumption."
The sun was shining overhead but there was no warmth, only a cold breeze, the natural beauty was heavenly and the chirping of the birds was very relaxing. There she stood.
"The world around me seems blurry.
Yumi was standing there with her friends, smiling and laughing, making me feel like everything in the world was perfect.
"The way you smile, the way you talk, I want to stare at you forever," I whispered to myself.
Then she turned to me and her lips moved.
"Kaito, are you okay? Is there something you want to say?" Yumi asked.
My body would not move, I could not make a sound, my feet were like stone, and I stood there helpless.
Before I could say anything, there was a noise.
Everything shattered like glass, everything disappeared, everything became dark.
And then I woke up!
"Ooh, ooh, ooh, ooh, ooh."
"Again?
The sunshine got stronger, and a cool, gentle breeze blew in through the window. I closed the window and thought,
"Was it just a dream?
"Why does it always end up like this?"
"I saw you again in my dreams. I dream that you are mine. But in reality, you are just a dream."
I got up from the bed, fell to the floor and hit my face. Oh, I was a little worried. I looked at the calendar and it was December 25th, Christmas Eve. As of December 24th, I had decided to confess my feelings to Yumi-chan on Christmas Eve night.
After 7pm, I picked up my cell phone to ask Yumi out. I dialed her number and got the message: "The line is busy. Please wait or try again later."
"Hmm..."
"Okay, I'm fine."
"Maybe she is busy, maybe she hasn't woken up yet," I muttered to myself.
I went to the bathroom to freshen up. As I splashed cold water on my face, the dream came back to my mind. I tried to forget it, but I couldn't. I looked at myself in the mirror and said,
"I don't know why I love you. Maybe it's because of your kindness, or maybe it's because of your beautiful soul. I don't know the reason, but one thing is for sure, I really love you, Yumi-chan."
"You're not my soulmate. More than a soulmate, you're a part of my soul."
I came out again, sat on the floor and thought about Yumi-chan. I closed my eyes and saw her sitting alone, as if she was waiting for someone. It seemed like she was waiting for me.
Suddenly, my cell phone rang.
Betts, Betts, Betts.
I opened my eyes in a panic, thinking it was a call from Yumi-chan, but instead there was a message notification from Itsuku-san.
"Hello Kaito! Merry Christmas! Make the best memories today." A message from Itsuku.
I smiled and replied,
"Thank you, Itsuku. Enjoy today and make the best memories of your life."
Why hasn't Yumi call me? I decided to try again. I call Yumi, but she didn't answer.
I was overthinking it.
"Why won't it come out?
"Is she avoiding me? Or is she with someone? I asked myself.
Okay, I'll send her a message.
"Merry Christmas! I invite you to a cafe near my house after 7pm. I'll be waiting for you there. I sent you a message.
"Ha ha ha, mhmm, this love is completely one-sided."
"Loving someone who doesn't love you is like singing a beautiful song to a deaf person."
Today was a beautiful day, like one that seemed to last forever: shining sun, a soft cool breeze, the buzzing of butterflies, the smooth sound of leaves falling gently.
I sat on the balcony and remember about old times.
The first day I met Yumi-chan, the first day of Kyoto High School. I sat in the back seat, and she sat two seats ahead. From that day on, I fell in love with her. But I couldn't tell her how I felt. But today was the day to make the best memories.
"But what if she starts to hate me? What if she starts to ignore me even more? What if she slaps me in the face?" I muttered to myself.
I checked my cell phone several times, but there was no response from her. Suddenly, itsuku-san came to my house.
"Kaito-san, let's go! Hey, Kaito-san, let's go!" It would be a waste to stay at home, and I don't want you to waste a day either. Let's go!" Itsuku said.
"Hahaha, that's right, Itsuku-san! Wait a minute, I'll be right there!" I replied.
I quickly changed my clothes.
"Mom, I'm just going to outside for a bit," I said.
"Okay, be careful," Mom replied.
"Let's go, Itsuku-san."
For a while we just walked forward in silence.
"Kaito, say something. You seem a bit nervous today."
"Um, yeah, just ignore me. I'm just thinking about someone," I replied.
"Hmm, I see. You're thinking about Yumi, aren't you?" said Itsuku.
I blushed. "Well, why did that?" I stammered.
"Kaito, today is Christmas," Itsuku said.
“But I’ve already call to ask her out, and she hasn’t responded yet.
"Kaito, don't worry. Kaito, If she comes, it means she likes you too. Believe it."
"Yes," I replied.
We kept walking, Itsuku’s chatter fading into the background as my eyes caught something—or someone—through the window of a nearby café. Yumi-chan. She was there, sitting across from a boy I didn’t know, laughing at something he’d said. Her smile, so effortless and warm, was like a punch to my gut. My chest tightened, and for a moment, I couldn’t breathe.
If she was here, with him, and hadn’t answered my calls or messages… what did that mean? The realization hit me like a wave: she didn’t feel the same way. Not even a little. The hope I’d been holding onto all day crumbled, leaving me feeling foolish for even dreaming she might.
"Okay. If she's happy with him, I won't get in Yumi's way."
"I hope we meet again in the next life, I want to reach you before anyone else," I whispered to myself.
I couldn't stand there any longer. I felt so weak I thought I might collapse at any moment. So I decided to go home.
"Itsuku-san, I'm sorry but I have to go now. Goodbye!" I said and ran away.
"Hey, wait up, Kaito! What's wrong? Wait!" said Itsuku.
I didn't stop or look back. I just ran as fast as I could. I felt the heat of tears building behind my eyes, my vision blurring as I struggled to keep my composure. This beautiful day had turned into the darkest day for me. The sounds of nature were starting to irritate me. I had been waiting for this day for so long and now I just wanted to forget it forever. I got home and ran straight to my room.
"What's wrong, Kaito?" my mother asked.
"No, mom, it's nothing. I just remembered something important," I answered.
I looked at the door, lay in bed and thought how stupid I was, she was happy with someone else, I can't explain my feelings and actions.
I stood up, sat down, closed my eyes, and Yumi was there again.
I thought,
"Whenever I close my eyes, I always see you. If closing my eyes means I can see you, Yumi-chan, then I choose to close my eyes forever."
It was 6:46pm and I was so disappointed, I had planned so much for her, bought gifts and bouquets, and now everything was gone, just like the dream I had this morning.
Beck, beck, beck, beck.
Suddenly, my phone rang with a message. I quickly opened it and saw a message that made my heart flutter: "Merry Christmas, I’m on my way to the café! See you soon?”
It was from Yumi-chan. I was shocked. I didn't expect to get such a response. I felt like everything was back to normal, and I couldn't contain my excitement. Instantly regaining my energy, I scrambled to change into my best clothes, pulling on a clean shirt and smoothing out the wrinkles. My hands moved quickly, but my mind was racing even faster. Tonight had to be perfect—every detail, every moment. I glanced in the mirror, running a hand through my hair, and took a deep breath. This was it
I grabbed the bouquet of flowers and the present I'd bought for Yumi and ran out the front door.
"Mom, I'm off! I'll be back later, okay?" I yelled.
"He's totally angry... What happened? God only knows," my mother muttered as she watched me leave.
The atmosphere on Christmas Eve was fantastic. Shirakawa Street was lit up with lights, and every shop was beautifully decorated. People were smiling, the cold wind was gentle, and the scene was like a dream.
I arrived at the café a little before 7 pm, my heart pounding like a drum. The place was cozy, with warm lighting, the smell of coffee and pastries filling the air, and Christmas decorations everywhere. It was exactly the kind of place I thought Yumi would love.
I found a table by the window, where I could see the snow falling outside. The waitress came over, and I ordered a hot chocolate, mostly just to have something to do with my hands
As the minutes ticked by, my anxiety grew. "Maybe she’s running late", I told myself, trying to stay calm. The café was filling up with couples and groups of friends, all laughing and enjoying the festive atmosphere. I felt completely out of place, sitting there alone, staring at my phone.
By 7:30 pm, I couldn’t sit still anymore. The café felt suffocating, like the walls were closing in on me. I needed air, space, somewhere to think. I left some money on the table for the hot chocolate I barely touched and stepped outside.
Maybe I just need to clear my head, I thought, shoving my hands into my pockets. Without really thinking, my feet carried me toward the beach. It was a place I always went when I needed to think, to escape. The sound of the waves, the vastness of the ocean—it always made me feel small in a comforting way.
The beach was quiet, the only sounds the gentle crash of waves and the distant hum of the city. I sat on the sand, staring out at the dark horizon. The snow had stopped, and the stars were beginning to peek through the clouds.
Suddenly, I heard someone call my name.
"Suzunoumi-kun!"
My heart leapt at the sound of her voice. I turned and there she was~ her golden hair shining in the soft light, her cheeks flushed from the cold, her smile just perfect and for a moment the world seemed to freeze.
"Y-Yumi?” I stammered, scrambling to my feet. “What are you doing here?”
She took a step closer, her hands clutching the straps of her bag. “I was on my way to the café, but… I saw you walking toward the beach. I thought maybe you needed some space, so I waited. But then I realized… I didn’t want to wait anymore.”
My breath caught in my throat. “You… followed me?”
She nodded, her eyes searching mine. “I didn’t want to miss this chance. Not tonight.”
For a moment, Yumi just stood there, the tension between us palpable. Then she smiled, a small, shy smile that made my heart race.
She stepped closer and sat down next to me, her movements graceful and deliberate. Without a word, she handed me the gift, her eyes soft and full of anticipation.
"Merry Christmas, Suzunoumi-kun. Here's a present for you."
“Thank you, Yumi-chan,” I said, my voice trembling slightly as I held out the bouquet of flowers and the carefully wrapped present. “This… this is for you.”
"Thank you so much," Yumi said, her eyes shining and smiling warmly.
"By the way, Suzunoumi-kun,” Yumi said, her voice soft but teasing, “you’ve really become so handsome.”
I blushed with embarrassment and nervousness. "Thank you, Yumi. But you're... beautiful and even elegant."
"Thank you for the compliment.
As I sat there, I was about to gather up the courage to confess to her, but before I could, she spoke up again.
“Suzunoumi-kun, do you believe in love at first sight?”
The question caught me off guard, and I stammered a little. “Uh, I don’t know. Maybe? I think it’s more about… getting to know someone, you know?”
She nodded, her gaze drifting to the ocean. “Yeah, I think so too. But sometimes, you just meet someone and feel like… they’re going to be important to you. Does that make sense?”
“Yeah,” I said softly, my heart skipping a beat. “It does.”
After some time I Gathered up my courage and hesitantly asked, "Yumi-chan, do you have a crush on anyone?"
She looked at me with a serious expression. Was it a mistake to ask?
She smiled and sweetly replied, "I don't know. His smile is so beautiful, it's mesmerizing. And his eyes... I just can't stop thinking about him. Everything about him, the way he talks... I love everything about him. He's my perfect prince."
Her words made me both happy and anxious. I assumed she was talking about the boy she had been laughing with at the cafe. I nearly let my feelings go, but I had to ask.
"who is he?"
Yumi looked at me again and slowly moved her lips.
"The boy I was talking about...it's you, Suzunoumi-kun."
I froze. My mind went blank. My heart pounded. Was this real? Was she really talking about me?
"Hey Yumi, if that boy is me, then who was the boy you were talking and laughing with at the cafe?" I asked gently.
Yumi's eyes sparkled as she smiled, "The boy at the cafe is just a friend. The cafe belongs to his father and I had just reserved a special table for us. I was busy making all the arrangements, so I didn't reply to your calls or messages. But when I saw your message, I replied."
I was still sorting it all out.
"But why did you go through all this for me?"
Yumi-chan smiled gently. "Well... Suzunoumi-kun, I like you. I've liked you ever since the first time we met. I've always liked you."
"I was planning to confess today, on Christmas Eve.
Relief washed over me, so intense it made me laugh. “I guess we were both overthinking it, huh?”
She laughed too, the sound blending with the sound of the waves. “Yeah, we were.”
We sat there on the beach for what felt like hours, talking and laughing, the sound of the waves blending with our voices. I couldn’t believe how perfect the night had turned out.
At one point, Yumi glanced at her phone and smiled. “Oh, I almost forgot! I made some arrangements earlier. Do you trust me?”
I raised an eyebrow, curious. “Arrangements? What kind of arrangements?”
She stood, pulling me to my feet. “You’ll see. Come on, let’s go.”
We walked back toward the town, our hands still intertwined. The streets were quiet, lit by the warm glow of Christmas lights. I knew we were heading to the café, but I didn’t know what to expect. All I knew was that being with her was enough.
When we reached the café, Yumi stopped outside and turned to me with a mischievous smile. “Wait here for a second, okay?”
Before I could respond, she slipped inside, leaving me standing on the sidewalk, confused but intrigued. A few minutes later, she reappeared, her eyes sparkling.
“Okay, close your eyes,” she said, taking my hand again.
“Yumi, what are you—”
“Just trust me,” she interrupted, her voice soft but insistent.
I closed my eyes, letting her lead me inside. The warmth of the café enveloped me, and I could smell the rich aroma of coffee and freshly baked pastries.
“Okay, open them,” Yumi said.
I did, and my breath caught in my throat. The café was beautifully decorated, with fairy lights strung across the ceiling and a small table set up by the window, complete with candles and a single rose.
“Yumi, this is… amazing,” I said, my voice barely above a whisper.
She smiled, her cheeks tinged with pink. “I wanted tonight to be special. For us.”
We sat down at the table Yumi had arranged, the candles casting a warm, flickering light over her face. The waitress brought over two steaming mugs of hot chocolate, topped with whipped cream and a sprinkle of cinnamon. Yumi’s eyes lit up as she took a sip.
“This is amazing,” she said, her voice filled with delight. “You have to try it.”
I took a sip, the rich, creamy flavor warming me from the inside out. “You’re right. This is the best hot chocolate I’ve ever had.”
Yumi smiled, her cheeks still flushed from the cold. “I’m glad you like it. I thought this place would be perfect for tonight.”
“It is perfect,” I said, glancing around at the cozy café, the fairy lights twinkling above us. “But honestly, Yumi… anywhere would feel perfect as long as you’re there.”
Yumi’s cheeks turned an even deeper shade of pink, and she looked down at her mug, a small smile playing on her lips. “You’re such a romantic, Suzunoumi-kun.”
I laughed, feeling a little embarrassed but also relieved. “Only when it comes to you.”
She glanced up at me, her eyes soft and warm. “Well, I’m glad I’m here with you tonight.”
“Me too,” I said, my voice quiet but sincere.
For a moment, we just sat there, the silence between us comfortable and full of unspoken understanding. Outside, the snow continued to fall, blanketing the world in a quiet, peaceful glow.
Hey, Suzunoumi-kun,” Yumi said after a while, her voice soft but steady. “Do you remember the first time we met? I mean, really met?”
I tilted my head, thinking. “At the classroom?”
She shook her head, a playful smile tugging at her lips. “No, before that. It was at the school festival last year. You were helping out at the book stall, and I came by to buy a novel. You recommended one to me, and we ended up talking for almost an hour.”
My eyes widened. “That was you? I remember that! But… I didn’t realize it was you.”
Yumi laughed, the sound light and melodic. “I know. I thought it was funny that you didn’t recognize me later in class. But that day… it meant a lot to me. You were so kind, and you listened to me in a way no one else did.”
I felt my heart swell. “I guess that’s when it started for me too,” I admitted. “I didn’t realize it at the time, but… I think that’s when I started falling for you.”
Yumi’s eyes sparkled, and she reached across the table to take my hand. “Then I guess this is where our story really begins.”
We stayed like that for a while, talking and laughing, the world outside fading away. At one point, the café played a slow, romantic song, and Yumi stood, pulling me to my feet. “Dance with me,” she said, her voice soft but insistent.
I hesitated, my cheeks flushing. “Here? Now?”
She grinned. “Why not? It’s Christmas Eve. Anything can happen.”
And so we danced, right there in the middle of the café, oblivious to the other patrons. For me, it felt like a dream—one I never wanted to wake up from. Yumi’s hand in mine, her head resting lightly on my shoulder, the warmth of her presence filling every corner of my heart.
As the night wore on, we stepped outside into the snow-covered streets. The city was quiet, the only sound the crunch of snow beneath our feet and the distant hum of Christmas carols. Yumi reached for my hand again, lacing her fingers through mine.
“Thank you,” she said suddenly, her breath visible in the cold air.
“For what?” I asked, turning to look at her.
“For being brave enough to tell me how you felt. For not giving up on me, even when I didn’t reply right away.”
I smiled, my heart full. “I’d wait forever for you, Yumi.”
She stopped walking and turned to face me, her eyes shining. “You don’t have to wait anymore.”
And then, under the soft glow of the streetlights, with snowflakes falling around us like stars, we shared our first kiss—a moment so perfect it felt like it had been written in the stars all along.
--------------------------------------------------------
The next morning, I woke up with a smile on my face. For the first time in a long time, I didn’t feel the weight of uncertainty or doubt. Yumi’s text was the first thing i saw when i checked my phone:
“Good morning, Suzunoumi-kun. Last night was perfect. Let’s make more memories like that, okay?”
I replied with a simple, heartfelt message:
“Good morning, Yumi. I can’t wait.”
And as i looked out at the snow-covered world outside my window, i knew that this was just the beginning of something beautiful.
"Thank you for reading Misunderstood Heart. Sometimes, love isn't about grand gestures but about understanding the truth hidden between words and actions. Misunderstandings can shape or break a story—just like in real life. I hope this short tale resonated with you in some way.
