5 アテネ・噂
イアンテに惹かれるオーブリーは、遺跡めぐりに足を伸ばす計画を立てる。すると、途中の森には夜になると、吸血鬼が出ると引き止められる。しかしヴォルテール流の啓蒙主義にかぶれたオーブリーには、そんな化け物など信じられない。
オーブリーは段々と、イアンテから離れられなくなってきた。ロマンスに夢見た女性の美点とは全てが対照的な、無邪気な彼女こそが、彼の心を奪ったのだ。イギリスの生活習慣に凝り固まった若者が、無学なギリシャの娘と結婚して虐められるのかと、笑い飛ばそうとしても、自分の前にある妖精への愛着が増すばかり。
彼女から身を引くべきと考えて、よくある好古家の研究計画を立て、目的達成まで出たら戻るまいと決心したこともある。しかし最早、さるイメージに頭の中がいっぱいになってしまって、自分の周りの廃墟に注意を向け続けることができないと気づいた。
Aubrey began to attach himself more and more to Ianthe; her innocence, so contrasted with all the affected virtues of the women among whom he had sought for his vision of romance, won his heart; and while he ridiculed the idea of a young man of English habits, marrying an uneducated Greek girl, still he found himself more and more attached to the almost fairy form before him. He would tear himself at times from her, and, forming a plan for some antiquarian research, he would depart, determined not to return until his object was attained; but he always found it impossible to fix his attention upon the ruins around him, whilst in his mind he retained an image that seemed alone the rightful possessor of his thoughts.
イアンテの方は愛されても意識せず、初めから変わらぬ野生児であった。離れるとなると、決まって嫌がったけれど。それは自分の連れが、時の流れに耐えて残った断片少々をスケッチしたり掘り出したりするのに気を取られたりすると、お気に入りの場所へ連れて行ってくれる人が居なくなるからのようだった。
彼女が頬を膨らませて吸血鬼のことを両親に訴えると、2人とも、その名を怖じ恐れて青ざめ、その存在を確言した。
Ianthe was unconscious of his love, and was ever the same frank infantile being he had first known. She always seemed to part from him with reluctance; but it was because she had no longer any one with whom she could visit her favourite haunts, whilst her guardian was occupied in sketching or uncovering some fragment which had yet escaped the destructive hand of time. She had appealed to her parents on the subject of Vampyres, and they both, with several present, affirmed their existence, pale with horror at the very name.
その後間もなくオーブリーは、2～3時間ほどかかる遠足に行こうと決めた。場所を聞いた途端、どうか夜に戻ることがないようにと皆で懇願してきた。どうしても森を抜けなければならないのだけど、そこは日が暮れてからは、何があろうと地元民が残ることはないと。懇々と説くところでは、吸血鬼共の百鬼夜行になるのだと。そんな連中にわざわざぶつかりに行くような馬鹿な真似はするものでないと、血相を変えて止められた。
オーブリーは皆が言うことを軽く見て、そんな迷信をと、笑い飛ばそうとした。しかし、かくも強烈な地獄の力、正にその名を大胆に嘲るとはと、血も凍るような顔をされては、口を噤むしかなかった。
Soon after, Aubrey determined to proceed upon one of his excursions, which was to detain him for a few hours; when they heard the name of the place, they all at once begged of him not to return at night, as he must necessarily pass through a wood, where no Greek would ever remain, after the day had closed, upon any consideration. They described it as the resort of the vampyres in their nocturnal orgies, and denounced the most heavy evils as impending upon him who dared to cross their path. Aubrey made light of their representations, and tried to laugh them out of the idea; but when he saw them shudder at his daring thus to mock a superior, infernal power, the very name of which apparently made their blood freeze, he was silent.
翌朝、オーブリーはお供も連れず、遠足に出かけた。見て驚くほど主人が陰鬱な顔をしていたのは、自分の言葉が恐ろしい悪鬼の迷信を嘲笑したことで、恐怖に取り憑かれたらしい。出発しようとしたとき、イアンテが馬の側に来て。どうかお早いお戻りをと、真剣に懇願してきた。夜には例の存在の力が行動に移れるようになるのだからと。これは約束した。
Next morning Aubrey set off upon his excursion unattended; he was surprised to observe the melancholy face of his host, and was concerned to find that his words, mocking the belief of those horrible fiends, had inspired them with such terror. When he was about to depart, Ianthe came to the side of his horse, and earnestly begged of him to return, ere night allowed the power of these beings to be put in action;—he promised.
ところが、研究に夢中になっていたら、いつの間にか日の光が陰ってきた。地平線には、シミのようなものが認められる。温暖な気候では直ぐにも巨きな入道雲になり、雨を乞う郷にすべての怒りをぶちまけるであろう。
…ようやくにして、自分の馬に乗り跨るや、飛ばして遅れを取り戻そうとした。もう遅すぎた。たそがれ時など、こんな南国の風土では、ほぼ解らない。たちまち太陽が沈み、夜が始まる。
さして遠くまでも進まないうち、頭上に嵐の勢力が。おどろおどろしく神鳴ることひっきりなし、濃い大雨が天蓋なす葉っぱ通り抜け、青い稲妻二股に落ちて足元照らすよう。途端に、馬は恐怖に襲われ、絡み合った森の中を恐ろしい速さで運ばれた始末。
He was, however, so occupied in his research, that he did not perceive that day-light would soon end, and that in the horizon there was one of those specks which, in the warmer climates, so rapidly gather into a tremendous mass, and pour all their rage upon the devoted country.—He at last, however, mounted his horse, determined to make up by speed for his delay: but it was too late.Twilight, in these southern climates, is almost unknown; immediately the sun sets, night begins: and ere he had advanced far, the power of the storm was above—its echoing thunders had scarcely an interval of rest—its thick heavy rain forced its way through the canopying foliage, whilst the blue forked lightning seemed to fall and radiate at his very feet. Suddenly his horse took fright, and he was carried with dreadful rapidity through the entangled forest.
とうとう動物は疲労のあまり立ち止まり。稲妻の光で気づいたことには、取り巻く枯れ葉や枝の塊にほぼ埋まった、あばら家の近くに居ると。馬を降り、町への道案内が見つかればいい、最低でも雨宿りはできるものと安心して近づいた。
The animal at last, through fatigue, stopped, and he found, by the glare of lightning, that he was in the neighbourhood of a hovel that hardly lifted itself up from the masses of dead leaves and brushwood which surrounded it. Dismounting, he approached, hoping to find some one to guide him to the town, or at least trusting to obtain shelter from the pelting of the storm.
Ianthe:かくもオーブリーを惹き付けるイアンテとは、誰をモデルにしたのか、訳者には見当つかなかったところ。The Bylon Society のWebサイトに、Konstantina Tortomani による "The Vampyre as a literary war on the image of Greece" があった。ポリドリ『吸血鬼』は、当時のギリシャがオスマン・トルコ支配下にあった事実を背景とし、文学でギリシャ独立を戦わんとした作品だとする、非常に興味深い論文である。
Ianthe について
〇アテネの農奴の娘であり、現代ギリシャの象徴である
〇バイロン卿『異教徒』のレイラに対比される。レイラは野鹿 Gazelle に例えられ、カシミヤ蝶 Kashmeer butterfly として描写される
〇バイロン卿『チャイルド・ハロルドの巡礼』は Ianthe に献呈されている
〇作者はバイロン卿に同じく、ギリシャの現状を嘆く。遺跡の描写を見よ
〇レイラが "a soulless toy for tyrant’s lust" であるのに対し、イアンテは「魂のない人間ではない」と明言されている
と列挙されるのは、御説まことにごもっとも。論者の炯眼というより、こんな解り易いネタに気づかなかった訳者の不明を恥じる。
uncover:一般的に「覆いを取る」意であり、進んでは「発掘」を意味する。
the very name:単語 Vampyre そのものが禁忌、つまり言霊信仰があったように読める。しかし、そのような資料は見たことがない。
these southern climates:アテネは北緯37度59分02秒。日本の都市で言えば、福島市と仙台市の間に位置する。……南国とな？
