6月7日--起床。 腰が痛く、節々がだるい。 朝食をとり、目録に目を通した。
June 7.—Up at ——. Pains in my loins and languor in my bones. Breakfasted—looked over inventory.
夕食時にバイロン卿に会う。父とシェリーに手紙を書く。船頭付きの英国式端艇に、バイロン卿と一緒に乗った。聞かされた事では、ナポレオンのせいで子を授かったとか。シェリーに再会。
Saw L[ord] B[yron] at dinner; wrote to my father and Shelley; went in the boat with L[ord] B[yron]; agreed with boatman for English boat. Told us Napoleon had caused him to get his children. Saw Shelley over again.

[It seems rather curious that Polidori, living so near Shelley, should now have had occasion to write to him; ought we to infer that the challenge was now at last sent? Perhaps so; and perhaps, when Polidori "saw Shelley over again," the poet laughed the whole foolish matter off.—The boatman's statement that "Napoleon had caused him to get his children" means, I suppose, that he wanted to rear children, to meet Napoleon's conscriptions for soldiers.]
訳注 ナポレオンの百日天下から1年も経っていないこの時期に産まれた子というのは、出征して帰ってこれなくなるのを恐れて仕込んだ子という意味であろうか。ジュネーブ人ならフランス側についた筈だが、ナポレオン率いるフランス大陸軍はワーテルロー会戦で、イギリス・オランダ・プロイセン及びドイツ諸侯国連合軍に敗北した。ので、この船頭はその敗残兵か、参戦しなかった卑怯者という事になり、その事を敵陣に居たかもしれないイギリス人に話すというのは、些か無謀の振舞いに見える。
