小説本文は、これで終わる。アンソロジー『吸血鬼ラスヴァン』新刊を聞いて始めた翻訳も、刊行前に終わらせる事ができた。出た本を読んでみて、思っていた程でなかったというか、前書きと小説以外は訳されず、訳注も参照も載らないのは残念。
オーブリーは、医者と後見人が立ち去った後、使用人を買収しようとして果たせず。ペンと紙を所望し、これは与えられた。妹に手紙を書き、彼女自身の幸せ、名誉、そして今は墓に入ってしまった、かつて自身の希望、家の希望として彼女を両腕に抱いていた人々の名誉を思い起こすようにと、あまりにも重い呪いのゆえに結婚を数時間だけでも遅らせてほしいと懇願した。使用人はそれを届けると約束しながら、それを医者に渡し、医者は狂人の戯言如きで、オーブリー嬢の心をこれ以上掻き乱したりしないほうがよいと診断した。
夜が更けていく… 屋敷の者たちは、休む間もなく忙しく。そしてオーブリーは、説明されるまでもなく想像のつく恐怖を以って、忙しない準備の音を聞いているしかなかった。

Night passed on without rest to the busy inmates of the house; and Aubrey heard, with a horror that may more easily be conceived than described, the notes of busy preparation.
朝が来て、馬車の音が耳に響き渡った。オーブリーはもはや半狂乱。
使用人たちの好奇心はついに警戒心を上回り、次々に居なくなり、監護に残ったのは無力な老婆のみ。機会を捉えるや、一跳びで部屋の外に出たところ、ほぼ全員が集まっている大部屋だったのが直ぐに判った。ラッスェン卿が真っ先に気づき、さっと近づき、怒りに言葉を失いながらも、力づくで腕を掴んで部屋から連れ出した。階段でラッスェン卿は耳元にささやいた。
「誓いを忘れるな。そして今日、私の花嫁になれなければ、お前の妹が不名誉を蒙るまで。女とは脆いものよ！」
そう言って、老婆に呼ばれて探しに来た従者たちの方へ、彼を押しやった。オーブリーはもはや自分を抑えることができず、怒りが爆発して血管が破れてしまい、ベッドに運ばれた。入室時に、その場に居なかった妹には、動揺させるのを恐れた医師が、このことを伝えなかった。結婚式が挙げられ、新郎新婦はロンドンを後にした。
Morning came, and the sound of carriages broke upon his ear. Aubrey grew almost frantic. The curiosity of the servants at last overcame their vigilance, they gradually stole away, leaving him in the custody of an helpless old woman. He seized the opportunity, with one bound was out of the room, and in a moment found himself in the apartment where all were nearly assembled.
Lord Ruthven was the first to perceive him: he immediately approached, and, taking his arm by force, hurried him from the room, speechless with rage. When on the staircase, Lord Ruthven whispered in his ear—"Remember your oath, and know, if not my bride to day, your sister is dishonoured. Women are frail!" So saying, he pushed him towards his attendants, who, roused by the old woman, had come in search of him. Aubrey could no longer support himself; his rage not finding vent, had broken a blood-vessel, and he was conveyed to bed. This was not mentioned to his sister, who was not present when he entered, as the physician was afraid of agitating her. The marriage was solemnized, and the bride and bridegroom left London.
オーブリーの衰弱は激しくなり、出血もあって死期が近いと思われた。彼は妹の後見人を呼ぶことを望み、真夜中を打った時になって、かくかくしかじかと落ち着いて話し、…その後すぐに世を去った。
Aubrey's weakness increased; the effusion of blood produced symptoms of the near approach of death. He desired his sister's guardians might be called, and when the midnight hour had struck, he related composedly what the reader has perused—he died immediately after.
後見人たちはオーブリー嬢を守ろうと急いだけれど、着いたときには手遅れだった。ラッスェン卿は姿を消しており、オーブリー妹は吸血鬼の渇きを癒した後だった！
The guardians hastened to protect Miss Aubrey; but when they arrived, it was too late. Lord Ruthven had disappeared, and Aubrey's sister had glutted the thirst of a Vampyre!
