Are standing desks good for you? What are the health benefits of them?


Let's wander back thousands of years. Early humans didn't crunch numbers, write articles or sell cars to support themselves and their families. They certainly didn't sit at desks all day. They survived by hunting relentlessly: walking, walking fast, running and tracking their prey until it was exhausted. It was not until the prey was cooked over the fire that our ancient ancestors sat down.


Since then, our knowledge and manipulation of the world has (apparently) progressed, but our bodies have actually barely evolved. We're still designed for persistent predation - we're designed to stand.

Sitting at a desk for 8 hours a day, 5 days a week, for decades on end can have serious consequences for our bodies and our health. In recent years, a great deal of research has been conducted on the effects of sedentary behavior on the body, and some of the findings will make you think twice about continuing to work as usual. The human body cannot withstand the constant stress placed on the musculoskeletal system while sitting. Ultimately, this seemingly calm posture can lead to back and neck pain and the development of musculoskeletal disorders (MSDs). In one study, it was determined that "sedentary time was associated with an increased risk of diabetes, cardiovascular disease, and cardiovascular and all-cause mortality." So, if sitting leads to all of these dire consequences, what can you do to prevent them? It's simple, do the opposite: stand.

Unfortunately, a sit stand deskwon't help you lose weight

In a perfect world, standing at a adjustable height deskfor most of the day instead of sitting would result in extra calorie burning.


However, one study showed that the reality is that standing only burns more calories per hour than sitting - about 88 calories per hour versus 80 calories per hour. This small increase is unlikely to help you achieve any weight loss or weight maintenance goals.


Instead, this study found that walking instead of sitting resulted in more energy expenditure - in fact, about 130 more calories were burned. (Wait a minute ...... should we invest in a electric standing deskinstead of a standing desk??) The exact number of calories burned per hour while walking depends on your weight and pace, but walking can often help some people lose weight - especially when combined with efforts to eat healthy.


But while standing doesn't really burn more calories than sitting, know that sitting too much can affect your health over time - even if you do a lot of exercise.

Reduce overhead and fixed costs

Unlike a typical workstation, a adjustable desk with drawerswill help you save on overhead and fixed office costs. What do we mean? You may be asking. Think about it! If you are using a typical workstation, you will need an office chair and a table for your computer, monitor and other work supplies. That's only good for one person. What if you have more people on your team?


On the other hand, a standing gaming deskcan help you save on the cost of buying office seating because you don't need it. In addition, the ideal standing desk has enough space for your computer, stationery, lamp and other office essentials.

Research in this area is ongoing, but recent studies have shown that sitting and standing and active work increase the flow of blood and oxygen to the brain. This may go some way to explaining the increase in productivity and focus, as well as the improvement in the way we feel in keeping our energy levels high.

Alternating standing and sitting after meals may benefit blood sugar

A sedentary lifestyle (aka sedentary) increases a person's risk of developing type 2 diabetes by more than 90%. One theory about why is that being sedentary makes it harder for your body to absorb sugar from your blood, which causes blood sugar levels to rise. Over time, blood sugar spikes can lead to insulin resistance (aka type 2 diabetes).


Admittedly, the evidence is not overwhelming, but one study found that alternating sitting and standing during an eight-hour workday had a modest but beneficial effect on the regulation of post-meal blood sugar. This suggests that purchasing a standing desk (and actually standing) may help reduce the risk of developing diabetes.


In addition, being sedentary is not only a risk factor for type 2 diabetes. It is associated with a variety of health problems.


Improved posture

Standing allows you to become more aware of your body and overall posture. It also makes it easier to correct poor habits developed through movement, exercise and stretching over a lifetime. This isn't just advice from health professionals for back pain sufferers, because we all need it! Everyone around the world, young and old, would benefit from this change to a healthier way of working, and we can all enjoy the benefits of sitting and standing.




Better overall health

Any activity that gets you standing, moving and more active in the workplace can help reduce the risk of obesity. The risks of being sedentary include elevated cholesterol, type 2 diabetes, cardiovascular disease and high blood pressure. Being sedentary can also lead to lethargy and fatigue, and can lead to mental health problems.
