Chapter 41 - Pilse Arc

Lela tells Sonny everything she can remember.

Much of it confirms what he already suspects or has heard in Pilse, but hearing it from someone who has lived through it gives the truth a different weight. She speaks in a flat, exhausted voice at first, like she has repeated the same horrors so many times in her own head that the words have gone numb. Then the details start to sharpen.

She tells him which members are the cruelest. Which rooms the slaves fear most. Which doors stay locked. Which members of the Anti Society are true believers, and which are only still breathing because they learned how to obey and use their magic.

She tells him about punishments carried out in the courtyard so everyone can watch. About slaves being denied food until they agree to fight. About villagers being forced to hurt each other for the amusement of the people who took them. About those who resist disappearing into the annex buildings and returning hollow, bruised, and barely able to stand.

The more she speaks, the quieter Sonny becomes.

None of it shocks him. That is what unsettles him most. It all feels too familiar. Too close to the years he spent under the Omegas, just with a different lens.

As the time for the fight draws near, Sonny rises from the chair by the door.

"Stay here until I come back," he says.

Lela looks up at him, still pale, still trembling.

He stole a knife from the throne room and flips it to her handle-first. She catches it awkwardly.

"If anyone comes in before I return, defend yourself… or take the easy way out and save yourself a life of misery." he says. "Do not open this door unless you hear my voice."

She stares at the knife, then at him. "You really mean to fight all of them?"

"As many as I need to until Ruin taken care of."

Her fingers tighten around the handle. "How are you so calm?"

Sonny reaches for the door, then pauses.

"Because I grew up in a place like this," he says. His voice stays level, but his eyes harden. "I lived in it for nineteen years."

Lela cannot hide her surprise.

He looks at her over his shoulder. "I know what this kind of hell does to people. That is why I am ending it. I don’t want these people to end up emotionless shells, like me."

Her lips part, but no words come out.

Finally, she says, "Thank you."

Sonny opens the door. "Not yet," he replies, and steps out.

When Sonny enters the training room, the noise hits him first.

The place is packed. Anti members line the walls shoulder to shoulder. Others crowd the upper viewing deck, leaning over the rail with wild grins and hungry eyes. The energy in the room is feverish. They want blood. They want spectacle. They want to watch a death match.

Ruin stands near the center, smiling like a host about to begin a performance.

He strolls toward Sonny with his hands behind his back. "So," he says, his tone playful, "how was your time with the girl?"

Sonny does not break stride. "Gave me the clarity I needed. I am ready to fight."

Ruin laughs softly. "Good answer."

He turns and throws his arms wide to the room. "Look alive, all of you. We have a death match today."

The crowd erupts.

Rosco steps into the center from the opposite side of the room, eager to fight.

Ruin points toward Sonny. "This is our challenger. The newcomer. The one who thinks he can take Rosco's place. I introduce to you, Sonny."

The room answers with boos, jeers, and thrown scraps of trash. Sonny stands motionless through all of it.

Then Ruin's grin changes. It sharpens.

"But that is not the only reason he is here," Ruin says. "Our guest has bigger ambitions. He wants to free our slaves. End Anti Society. Drag everyone here back to their dull little village lives."

The crowd roars louder.

Sonny's stomach tightens. Ruin knows his true ambition. Someone in Pilse must have fed them intel. A traitor on the council.

Ruin glances sideways at him, enjoying the realization. Then he leans in close enough that only Sonny can hear.

"I know everything that happens in this basin." Ruin whispers.

He steps back and raises his voice again. "So tell me. Do we let that happen?"

"No!" the room shouts.

Ruin nods like a conductor pleased with his orchestra. "Good. Then today, we break him together."

His eyes flick to Sonny. "Any last words?"

Sonny steps forward. His voice is not loud, but it cuts through the noise anyway.

"He is telling the truth," Sonny says. "I came here to end Anti Society and return the basin villages to their peaceful lives."

A few members laugh. Others glare.

Sonny keeps going.

"Most of you were villagers not long ago. You had homes. Families. Friends. There are people waiting for you to return. This may be your only chance to return to your former life. If you step aside now, if you refuse to fight, I will do you no harm. But if you choose to stand with him and attack me, I will treat you as enemies. I will not hesitate to kill."

The reaction is mixed.

Most of the room mocks him. They laugh, spit insults, and shout that they would never go back. But a smaller group says nothing. Their faces tighten. Their eyes shift. Fear and doubt move through them at once.

Ruin sees it immediately. His smile vanishes seeing some of his followers waiver.

He turns toward the room. "Listen carefully," he says. "If any of you see hesitation in the person next to you, kill them. If anyone here forgets where their loyalty belongs, remind them with blood."

The silence that follows is colder than the shouting.

Sonny studies the room one last time. "You will die if you fight me," he says.

Some of them flinch. Most remain steady, prepared to fight.

Ruin walks backward toward the far end of the room, slips a vial from his pocket, and drinks it without taking his eyes off Sonny. He tosses the empty container aside.

Sonny will finally see what these power supplements contain.

Dark pressure rolls off him almost instantly.

Then he lifts one hand. "Begin."

The room erupts.

Sonny enters his battle form in the same breath. Bandages unfurl across his body. Black clothing takes shape over him like shadow pulled tight.

The first wave crashes in. Magic streaks from all sides. Energy users rush him head-on. Wind, fire, stone, and water all converge at once.

Sonny plants his feet and forms Ether Dome around himself. The translucent sphere flashes as attacks slam into it from every angle. The barrier shudders, then Sonny expands it outward with Ether Force. A violent concussion wave bursts across the room. Bodies are thrown back. Magic blasts scatter. Several fighters crash into the walls hard enough to crumple.

One man breaks through anyway, riding the momentum of the wave with wind around his fist. He drives straight at Sonny.

For a split second, Sonny sees the old woman outside the cafe. The photograph in her hand. The smile on her son's face.

This is him. The same boy. He is already committed to the strike.

Sonny's chest tightens, but his body does not hesitate.

He slips to the side and drives an open palm Ether Force into the man's torso at point-blank range.

The impact folds the attacker in half, crushing his rib cage and organs, and sends him flying across the room. He hits the floor and does not rise. Dead on impact.

Then the rest of the room reaches him.

He summons his sword.

The fight turns savage.

Sonny moves through the crowd like a storm cutting through dry timber. His blade flashes. Ether Orbs launch from his free hand and detonate among clusters of attackers or parry magic attacks. Ether Strings guide kunai through shifting targets, tearing holes in flesh of rushing fighters. Ether Jab punches through defenses and drops opponents before they can recover. Fire Breath rolls low across the floor in controlled arcs, forcing groups apart and breaking their formation.

Every second is motion. Every opening is punished.

An Anti lunges from Sonny's blind side with a hooked blade enhanced with magic. Sonny pivots, catches the man's wrist, and slams him into another attacker. Both go down. A stone spear thrust from the left. Sonny cuts the shaft, drives the sharp end back into the man's throat, then turns and sends Ether Shot through the shoulder of a fire user lining up an attack from the rear balcony.

Rosco enters the fight with a roar.

He covers his body in lightning, enhances it with energy, and swiftly charges through his own comrades. He swings a fast and heavy fist at Sonny's head. Sonny raises his forearm and blocks, but the impact still sends a sharp tremor through his bones.

Rosco grins. "There you are."

The two clash in the center of the room while the rest of the Antis circle for chances to strike. Rosco fights like a speedy brawler. Brutal. Direct. He uses his lightning magic to speed up each swing. When combined with his energy, it turns every punch into the force of a collapsing wall. Sonny slips one strike, ducks under another, and carves a shallow line across Rosco's side.

Rosco only laughs. "That all you've got?"

Sonny answers with a knee to the ribs and a burst of Ether Force that sends Rosco skidding backward through two of his own men.

Bodies continue to fall.

The training room changes shape under the violence. The floor cracks. Blood runs into the seams between the stone tiles. The cheers from the viewing deck grow less confident as more and more bodies pile up beneath them.

Ruin watches it all with rising irritation. He can feel the spreading fear.

At first it is only uncertainty. Then it becomes something uglier. Doubt.

He shouts for everyone to stop. The room obeys. For one brief moment, the battle holds still.

Sonny stands in the center of it, breathing hard, blood on his face and clothes. None of it changes his expression.

Then Ruin steps forward. He no longer bothers to hide what he is using.

His magic pressure surges. His muscles swell. Veins rise beneath his skin. His eyes flood red. A twisted aura bleeds off him in dark waves. Demon ether. Sonny’s hunch about his power supplement was correct.

Sonny feels it immediately. So does Draco, who reaches out to Sonny.

"So it is demon ether," Draco says inside his mind. "But it has fused with his magic. Be careful."

Sonny shifts into Terra form.

Markings flare across his body and bandages. His presence deepens. The air around him steadies as his defense rises.

Ruin attacks at once.

He is a dual caster. Water and metal answer both of his hands, and his energy control is strong enough to drive each movement with frightening speed. Needles of blood lift from the fallen around the battlefield and lance through the air like sharpened wires aimed at Sonny.

The room becomes chaos again.

Ruin drives a wall of water forward to blind Sonny, then sends blades of metal through it. Sonny raises his sword, turns his body, and lets the worst glance off bandage-wrapped arms and shoulders while he bursts through the center of the attack. Ruin meets him there with a punch loaded with energy. Sonny blocks, but the hit still forces him back three steps.

Rosco joins from the side, lightning surrounding his body, trying to trap Sonny between them.

Sonny drops low, sweeps Rosco's leg out, then hammers Ether Force into his knee. Bone cracks. Rosco staggers, snarling. Sonny follows up with an Ether Orb that blows a hole through Rosco’s chest, killing him instantly.

Alertly, Sonny turns and slashes through a blood spear Ruin sends for Sonny's spine.

The remaining Antis rush in again behind their leader.

Now Sonny has two battles to fight. Kill too many, and he becomes the monster he thinks he is. Hold back too much, and Ruin will butcher everyone in the room.

He changes tactics. He disables where he can rather than killing. A cut to the thigh. A shattered wrist. A precise strike to the jaw. When someone comes at him with full intent to kill, he answers with final force. There is no room for half measures against those trying to drive blades into his back.

Still, the number of dead continues to climb.

By the time another wave breaks, more than half the room is down.

The surviving Antis look less like zealots now and more like frightened people trapped in a storm they helped create.

Ruin sees it.

"Keep fighting!" he roars. "Or I will kill you myself!"

No one moves quickly enough. So he proves it. With a flick of his hand, a metal spike tears through the skull of the nearest follower. The body drops instantly. The room recoils.

Sonny's eyes narrow.

Ruin points at the others. "Move."

Desperation forces them forward. Their attacks lose conviction. Their timing is worse. Their fear is obvious.

Sonny tries to use that. He presses Ruin harder, trying to end the fight before more of them die, but every shift toward offense opens new angles for stray magic and desperate swings from the sides. A blade nicks his ribs. Fire scorches his shoulder. A blood spike tears a line across his thigh.

He grits through it and keeps moving.

Soon only a handful of followers remain standing, and none of them want to fight anymore, but Ruin does.

If anything, the demon ether has pushed him further past reason. The last trace of human restraint leaves him.

He stops commanding the others. Stops caring who is in the way.

Water whips around him in heavy arcs. Metal forms into jagged blades around his arms. Blood rises from the floor in spinning streams that lash at anything nearby. Two of his own followers are shredded when they fail to clear his path quickly enough.

Now that remaining Anti members have ceased fighting, Sonny can focus solely on Ruin.

The final clash begins.

Ruin hurls a storm of metal shards, hiding himself behind them. Sonny hardens his defense with Ether Wall, pushes through, and meets him inside the barrage. Their blows shake the room. Ruin swings with monstrous force. Sonny parries, slips, counters. Ruin drives an elbow toward Sonny's temple. Sonny catches the arm, twists, and slams a bandage-wrapped fist into Ruin's ribs. Something gives.

Ruin spits blood and answers with a burst of water pressure that cuts the stone floor open beneath Sonny's feet.

Sonny jumps clear and fires Ether Shot into Ruin's chest, blowing him backward into a cracked support pillar.

Ruin tears himself free with a roar and charges again. The two blur across the room.

Ruin is still powerful, but anger has made him sloppy. Sonny sees the pattern now. Every heavy swing leaves a seam. Every rush to overpower him opens Ruin's center for an instant too long.

Sonny starts taking those openings one by one.

A strike to the ribs.

A kick to the knee.

An Ether Force burst into the shoulder.

A blade across the forearm.

Another crushing hit to the side.

The demon ether keeps Ruin upright longer than he should be, but it cannot hide the damage forever. His breathing roughens. His attacks lose shape. His body begins to fail under the strain.

Sonny decides to end it.

He wants Ruin alive. Calo asked for retribution, not a corpse.

Ruin charges with everything he has left.

Sonny steps in. His blade flashes.

Ruin's left arm falls away.

At the same instant, Sonny's bandages coil around Ruin's injured right leg. Sonny clenches his fist. The bandages constrict and crush the bones within. The damaged limb gives out beneath him.

Ruin crashes to one knee.

Before he can rise, Sonny closes the distance and drives a bone shattering blow into Ruin's other arm. The limb buckles uselessly. Ruin collapses face-first onto the floor, gasping.

Sonny stands over him and begins a sequence of hand signs.

He has one chance to test the theory of Demon Reaper.

Ether gathers around him and takes on a darker shape. A demonic figure rises over Sonny's body like a shadow made solid. The room turns colder. Even the surviving Antis recoil.

The figure reaches into Ruin's back. Ruin convulses.

The hand sinks deeper, as though passing through flesh and bone to seize something beneath both. Then it pulls. Dark ether comes first. But it is tangled with something else. Magic.

The two have fused too deeply to separate. The demonic figure drags both free in one motion.

Ruin screams once. Then everything leaves him at once.

His body shrinks back to normal. The swelling in his muscles fades. The red in his eyes disappears. The pressure crushing the room vanishes.

The figure over Sonny studies what it has taken, then dissolves into ether.

Silence fills the training hall once more.

Broken stone. Fallen bodies. Blood across the floor. A few terrified survivors staring at Sonny like they are no longer sure what they are looking at.

Ruin lies at Sonny's feet, shattered, powerless, and alive.

The battle is over.
