Chapter 18: The Ambush and the Razor's Edge

Chapter 18: The Ambush and the Razor's Edge

The morning following the incident at the stables broke with a heavy grey sky over Teguma. Rain threat hung in the coastal air, carrying the salty aroma of the sea mixed with the cold dampness coming from the surrounding mountains. Inside Lord Arl's private solar, maps of the Valia territory were spread across a heavy oak table.

— Count Baxter... — Lord Arl murmured, resting his knuckles on the parchment, his expression hardened by years of military command. — If your account is accurate, Katriny, Baxter's shadow reaches further than we anticipated.

— He is a ruthless tactician, my lord — Katriny replied, her posture immaculate as she maintained our fabricated narrative with impressive naturalness. — The information we gathered suggests his agents are operating along the main trade routes leading toward the interior.

— He wants to disrupt the agreement between House Vance and Baron Claus — Arl stroked his chin, analyzing the trade routes. — A collapse of our salt and sugar logistics would weaken the southern border, opening an avenue for Earl Solano's influence to expand without military intervention.

I stood beside my mother, observing the map with a strategic eye disguised behind my six-year-old demeanor. The geopolitical board was becoming remarkably clear: Count Baxter was acting as Solano's instrument, attempting to destabilize intermediate fiefdoms like Baron Kenneth's and our own without launching an explicit declaration of war.

— We depart within the hour — Arl declared, rolling up the maps. — We won't give them time to organize a second attempt within Teguma's walls. The coastal guard will escort us to the border, and from there, our own veterans will take point.

The Departure from Teguma

The departure from Teguma was swift and methodical. Baron Claus made sure our escort was reinforced, deploying eight heavy mounted guards alongside our four Vance retainers. The carriage's sabotaged axle had been replaced with reinforced ironwood, inspected multiple times by Katriny herself.

As the coastal stone walls faded into the mist behind us, the landscape shifted dramatically. The open maritime roads gave way to the dense, towering canopy of the Black Forest. The ancient trees arched over the dirt path, filtering the sunlight into pale, flickering beams that barely illuminated the muddy tracks.

Inside the carriage, Lady Sylvia kept a gentle hand on my shoulder, while Katriny sat opposite us, her eyes darting toward the narrow glass windows every few seconds.

— You seem restless, Katriny — Sylvia noted softly.

— A habit of my order, my lady — the panda-monk replied smoothly. — Dense woodlands are ideal terrain for asymmetric skirmishes. It pays to remain vigilant.

In truth, both Katriny and I knew that an encounter was almost inevitable. If Baxter's agents had been forced to abandon their stealthy sabotage in Teguma, their only remaining option was a direct strike on the isolated forest road where reinforcements could not easily reach us.

The Forest Road and the Razor's Edge

Two hours deep into the woodland pass, the carriage ground to a sharp halt.

The horses whinnied in alarm, and the sound of drawing steel echoed from the front of the convoy.

— Halt! — the voice of Sergeant Vane rang out, authoritative and firm. — Clear the road!

I peeked through the side curtain. A massive fallen pine tree completely blocked the narrow pathway, its branches tangled in heavy brush. But what caught my attention was not the obstacle itself—it was the eerie silence that suddenly enveloped the forest. The birds had stopped singing, and even the wind through the leaves seemed to freeze.

— It's a bottleneck trap — I whispered to Katriny.

Before the monk could respond, a volley of black-feathered arrows rained down from the dense upper canopy.

— Ambush! Protect the carriage! — Lord Arl's command thundered over the sudden chaos.

Shields clashed against iron arrowheads. Three coastal guards fell from their mounts in the first second, struck before they could locate the archers hidden in the high branches. From the shadows of the thickets on both sides of the road, dozens of armed men dressed in dark leather and unmarked iron breastplates surged forward with drawn broadswords.

— Stay inside! — Sylvia shouted, pulling me toward the floor of the carriage.

However, the carriage doors were suddenly violently struck from the outside. A heavy battleaxe shattered the wooden paneling of the left door, splitting the frame in two. An attacker with a scarred face reached inside, grabbing for the interior latch.

Katriny didn't hesitate for a fraction of a second.

With a fluid, predatory grace that belied her bulky form, she kicked the remaining half of the door outward with incredible force. The heavy oak panel struck the attacker square in the chest with a sickening crunch, launching him three yards back into the dirt.

— Stay behind me, Lady Sylvia! Master Kaelen, hold fast! — Katriny bounded out of the carriage, her dual curved short swords unsheathed in a single smooth motion.

The Spectacle of Combat

What followed was a masterclass in martial discipline. Katriny moved through the chaotic melee like a force of nature. Her combat style—a seamless blend of monastic agility and brutal efficiency—turned the narrow space around the carriage into an impenetrable defensive sphere.

When two mercenary swordsmen charged her simultaneously, she lowered her center of gravity, deflected the first blade with a swift parry of her left short sword, and used the momentum to drive her palm directly into the second attacker's solar plexus. The kinetic impact was so intense that the man collapsed instantly, gasping for air.

From my vantage point near the broken door, I kept my focus sharp, monitoring the entire battle layout.

*Three archers on the ridge... four mercenaries flanking the rear guard... two coming around the right wheel...*

My child's body was still recovering from the neural overload of the previous night, but I couldn't remain entirely passive while our guard was being pressed. I focused a minimal, subtle pulse of Telekinesis—not a grand shield this time, but micro-disruptions.

When an archer on a high branch aimed a heavy longbow directly at Lord Arl's unhelmed head, I gave a tiny nudge to the archer's footing. The heel of his leather boot slipped two millimeters on the damp bark. His shot veered wildly off course, embedding itself harmlessly into a tree trunk five feet away from my father.

When a mercenary tried to stab Katriny from her blind spot while she was engaging two opponents, I pulled lightly on the hem of his tunic. The subtle tug threw off his balance just enough for Katriny to sense his presence. She spun around effortlessly, sweeping his legs out from under him with a low kick before finishing him with a precise strike from the pommel of her hilt.

Despite our resistance, the sheer numbers of the ambushers began to tell. Baxter had sent at least thirty experienced mercenaries, and our guard was down to seven effective fighters.

— Form a shield wall around the carriage! — Arl bellowed, his longsword covered in dark blood as he felled another attacker. — Hold the line!

The Vance Cavalry

Just as the circle of defenders began to tighten precariously and the pressure grew critical, the deep rumble of galloping hooves echoed through the forest floor from the north.

It wasn't the heavy, clattering rhythm of merchant guards. It was the synchronized, thunderous beat of heavy warhorses trained for charge tactics.

— House Vance! For the Falcon and the Sun! — a resounding war cry pierced through the trees.

Bursting through the foliage on the northern side of the road came a squadron of ten heavily armored cavalrymen, led by none other than Captain Roderick, one of my father's most trusted commanders from the home fiefdom. Their silver breastplates gleamed even under the dreary grey sky, and their long lances were set in lethal formation.

The ambushers' morale shattered in an instant. Caught between the resolute defense of our remaining guards and the devastating charge of heavy cavalry on their flank, the mercenaries began to break formation and flee into the thick undergrowth.

— Pursue them! Leave none to report back! — Roderick shouted, guiding his heavy charger through the thickets to cut off the retreat.

Within ten minutes, the forest road fell quiet once more, save for the heavy breathing of winded soldiers and the groans of wounded mercenaries.

Lord Arl wiped his blade on a fallen soldier's cloak and walked swiftly toward the carriage, his eyes scanning Katriny, my mother, and me.

— Is everyone unharmed? — he asked, his voice strained with adrenaline.

— The young master and Lady Sylvia are safe, my lord — Katriny replied, sheathing her blades with a crisp metallic click. — Your arrival was impeccably timed.

— Captain Roderick was already en route to meet us at the border — Arl explained, looking at the dead mercenaries scattered along the path. — It seems my instincts about Baxter were correct. He knew we were returning and wanted to wipe us out before we reached our territory.

He looked down at me, offering a firm hand to help me out of the carriage.

— You showed remarkable composure, Kaelen — my father noted, his stern eyes showing a rare glimmer of pride. — Most children your age would have been paralyzed by fear.

— I knew Katriny and your guards would hold, father — I replied calmly, adjusting my coat.

As Roderick's men cleared the fallen pine tree from the road, I looked back at the dark trees of the Black Forest. Baxter had failed twice now—first with stealth, then with raw force. But a man of his standing wouldn't stop here. The game on the board of Valia had only just begun, and House Vance was now firmly in his sights.
