ヴァーニッシュが見えてくる。熊面を手に
VARNISH discovered : bear's head in his hand .
ヴァーニッシュ：ふむ、ペッパーコール爺さんは酒を恐れつつ、俺にお面を持たせて閉じ込めたと。ルーシーは何処だろう？
Var . So , old Peppercoal was afraid of his wine and locks me up here with my head in my hand . Where can Lucy be ?
蝋燭を手にしてペッパーコール登場。
後をつけてきたルーシーが吹き消す。
Enter PepperCOAL , a candle in his hand ;
Lucy follows and blows it out .
ペッパーコール：ちいっ、持ってきた蝋燭が消えちまった。俺が戻るまで好きにしろ(退場)
ヴァーニッシュ：（ルーシーに口づけ）叫ばないで、奴が来るから。
ルーシー：そう簡単には火も着けられやしないわよ。あたしが火口箱をひっくり返して、竈門の火種は揉み消しておいたから。
あんたのご主人には手紙を出したよ、夜になったらオランダ人の幽霊になってここに来てと。
ヴァーニッシュ：拙いな、それじゃ殺されるぞ。それって俺が同じ事 、ペッパーコール爺さんに言っちまった、その場しのぎの出任せだったのに。来なけりゃ良いんだが…
ルーシー：いや、来るよ。こっちで縄ばしごも用意したんだし。向こうからは短信も返してくれて…はっ、落としちゃった。
Pep . Deuce take the candle , gone out - enjoy yourself fellow till my return . (exit.)
Var . (kissing Lucy) I intend it : don't scream -- he's coming .
Luc . He can't readily obtain a light -- I've upset the tinder box and poked out the kitchen fire-- I've sent a letter to your master , to come here to night as the ghost of the Flying Dutchman .
Var . The deuce ! then he'll be murdered . In order to save my own bones , I've told old Pepper coal the same thing . - Perhaps he won't come .
Lucy . Yes he will : I've provided here a rope ladder - he's written me a note - l've dropped it .
蝋燭の灯を囲うようにしてペッパーコール登場、ルーシーは背後に回る
Enter PepperCOAL , screening candle - Lucy runs behind him .
ペッパーコール：一体全体、何処から来やがった？てめえ拾ったのは、どういう書き付けだ？
ヴァーニッシュ：書き付け？
ペッパーコール：（拳銃突き付け）そうだ、言え。さもなければ…（短信を取り出して読む）「大部屋の窓の所で。時間通りに、3叩。さまよえるオランダ人より」その部屋、ここだな。
ヴァーニッシュ：主の字ではないな。
ペッパーコール：早くしろ。
ルーシー：灯がお入り用で？
ペッパーコール：出ていけ。
ルーシー：この耄碌爺。（文句つけつつ退場）
ペッパーコール：どれ、皆で一杯といくか。ケッケッケ！さまよえるオランダ人の健康に乾杯、っと。それ、酒だ！
（酒が運び込まれると、奴隷を追い払い）来い、飲め。
ヴァーニッシュ：嫌なこった。
ペッパーコール：飲めってんだよ！窓を開くか。[窓に3叩
ヴァーニッシュ：何だありゃ、蹄か？
Pep . Where the deuce did you come from ? What note is that you picked up ?
Var . Note ?
Pep . (producing a pistol) Yes ; give it me , or (takes note and reads) "At window in large room --- punctual at the time - three knocks -- yours , The Flying Dutchman." This is the room , I shall sup here.
Var . 'Tis not my master's writing .
Pep . Go you about your business .
Lucy . You called for a light .
Pep . Go along .
Lucy . You old bear ! [ exit , grumbling .
Pep. We'll have some wine : ha , ha ! you shall drink the Dutchman's health . Wine , there ! (wine brought in - he drives the slaves out) Come , drink .
Var . N -o , n -o .
Pep . I say , Y -e-s ! There open the window . [ three knocks at window.
Var . I - I see his cloven foot . Oh dear !
ペッパーコールは拳銃を構えて窓を開け、コートとマスクを着けたピーターが現れる。
ペッパーコールが撃つも弾は外れ、脱走。
ヴァーニッシュは身を隠し、ピーターは狼狽してテーブルに上り、背後でピストルが発射され、倒れ、…
Peppercoal presents pistol , window opened , Peter appears in a cloak and mask -- Peppercoal fires at him , misses him , and runs out . Varnish conceals himself , Peter climbs on the table in consternation , a pistol fired behind , he falls in , & c .
ピーター！
ピーター：ヴァーニッシュ！
ヴァーニッシュ：扉に鍵かけろ、縄梯子はこっちだ。
[ピーターは扉に鍵かけ、ヴァーニッシュは外に出る、縄梯子が壊れ。
ピーター：ちっ、縄梯子が使えん。かくなる上は、（どんどんどん、めりっ）
いかん、この箱の、（机から箱を小刀で引き摺ろうとして、指先を切ってしまう）
痛、切れてしまった（テーブルクロスで縛る）、
いざ、中の人に。それっ［箱に入り座り蓋を閉め
Peter !
Pet . Varnish !
Var . Lock the door - heres a rope ladder .
[ Peter locks door , Varnish gets out , ladder breaks .
Pet . Ladder given way - pretty way I'm in (noise) Oh dear ! -box - fast - (forces box with knife from table , cuts his finger) Now I've cut my finger . (ties it up with table cloth) In I go - private box to myself . [ gets in , &c .
ペッパーコールが奴隷陣引き連れ。
Enter PeppeRCOAL and Slaves .
ペッパーコール：誰も居なくなった…呪われたのか此の家。あの絵と、あの悍ましい箱のせいだな、持って行って海へ投げ捨てろ。
俺は兵隊を呼びに守備隊へ行く。 [と言って退場、箪笥は力づくに退かされ…
Pep . All gone -- the house is bewitched : it's those pictures and that infernal chest : take and toss them into the sea . I'll to the garrison for soldiers .
