真ん中に窓。その脇にヴァンダーデッケンの肖像画。反対側に女羊飼の肖像画、その下に船箪笥。外套が掛けてあり、他に机椅子など。
侍女ルーシーはトランク解錠を試みており、レステレはリュートの弦を調整中。
Window in centre , on one side portrait of Vanderdecken , screen beneath it ; on the other , portrait of a Shepherdess , sea trunk beneath it - cloak hanging up ; table , chairs , & c .
Lucy trying to unlock trunk - LESTELLE arranging chords of lute .
ルーシー：うーん。砦にあった鍵は、どれも合いませんね。
レステレ：別に良いから、こっちへおいで。古いバラッド歌ったげる、ヴァンダーデッケンの奥さんが独り寝の徒然に歌ったっていう。
ルーシー：お嬢様のお歌なら、あたし聞いてますから。
［2人は座り、ルーシーは作業
Lucy . I've tried every key in the fortress to no purpose .
Les . Never mind ; come and sit by me , l'll sing you the old ballad Vanderdecken's wife used to sing in his absence .
Lucy . You sing, I'll work.
[ They sit , Lucy at work .

この歌の間、ヴァンダーデッケンはまず窓に現れ、次に箪笥から出てくる。部屋を調べ、音楽を聴き、......。
箱の蓋がバンと落ち、女性たちが悲鳴を上げ、そのとき落ちたマント
の下に、ヴァンダーデッケン消滅。
During this ballad Vanderdecken first appears at the window , then rises out of the chest : he surveys apartment , listens to the music , & c .; as lid of box falls , women scream he goes under the cloak , which falls ; Van derdecken is gone .
ルーシー：何あれ！あの箱の蓋が勝手に開いて閉じた、私見ちゃった……心臓バクバクですわ。こういうとき、二人とも結婚してないのが…
レステレ：私、立てないかも。
Lucy . Murder ! that box lid opened and shut I'm sure it did -- how my heart beats : Ah ! marm , its a great pity we are not both married .
Lest . I'm so frightened .
ルーシー：お嬢様はもっと怖気づくでしょうね、スマッタの話を知ったら。
ここから遠くないところに悪魔の洞窟があり、若い乙女をヴァンダーデッケンが連れ込むことがあるそうです。そこにある運命の帳簿に名前を書き込まれたら、彼と海の魔女ロカルダの奴隷になるのだと。
Lucy . You'd be more frightened , did you know what Smutta says . He says , not far from hence is a cavern , called the Devil's Cave , to which Van derdecken sometimes spirits away young maidens , to set their names in a fatal log - book there -- when they become slaves to him and Rockalda , the Hag of the Waters .
レステレ：何てこと！…また叔父上か。
Lest . Horrible ! -here's my uncle again.
ペッパーコール登場、手紙を持って。
Enter PEPPERCOAL , with Letter .
ペッパーコール：来たか、…よい子よ。御目見得だ、スマッタ。似ているな父親に、ピーター・フォン… 着いたぞ、
Pep . He's come - the dear boy ! Shew him in , Smutta . So like his father , Peter Von - here he is ,
ヴァンダーデッケン登場。
Enter VANDERDECKEN .
ようこそ、親愛なる少年よ！親父殿そっくりだな。
こちらは、私のレティ。 - あそこに、お前さんにと手入れした船。
Welcome , my dear boy ! Exactly like his father . This is my Letty - there's a trim built vessel for ye .
レステレにもヴァンダーデッケンが見えてくると。男は女羊飼の絵に目を遣り。
Vanderdecken starts at sight of Lestelle — he glances at Shepherdess .
ほう、あなたも似ているとお感じですか？古い写真ならたくさんありますぞ、お気に召したらどうぞ。
What , you perceive the likeness , too , eh ? We've plenty of old pictures , if you fancy them .
ルーシー : （傍白）ちょっとご主人、似てるというなら、あそこのさまよえるオランダ人は - 小声で）
Lucy . (aside) Sir , sir , if you talk of likenesses , the one there of the Flying Dutchman is — whispers)
はっとしたヴァンダーデッケンは手を振る、するとその絵姿はピーターに似る。
Vanderdecken notices , waves his hand , and the picture of himself resembles Peter .
ペッパーコール：ハハッ！この女は狂っている、ナンセンスだ！
ほら此奴め、こっちだ。恥ずかしがらずに話しかけてみろ。
Pep . Ha , ha ! is the wench ' mad ! nonsense ! Come , you dog ! don't be bashful - speak to her .
ヴァンダーデッケンは喋ろうとして、何か思い出した様子。仕草で口がきけないと伝える。
Vanderdecken is about to speak , recollects himself , and makes signs that he is dumb .
全員：唖だって！
All . Dumb !
ヴァンダーデッケンは机に駆け寄り字を書き、ペッパーコールはその書付けを読む。
Vanderdecken runs to table and writes-- Peppercoal reads the paper .
ペッパーコール：「航行中に雷に打たれ唖然と。間もなく回復すると言われています。」
憐れな！自問自答しかできないのか。
それならレティ、…（握手させようとしたところで、扉が叩かれ）
Pep . " Struck dumb on my passage by lightning I'm told I shall soon recover . " Poor fellow ! Then you'll have all the talk to yourself , Letty , so- (As he is going to join their hands , a knock at door)
スマッタ登場
Enter SMUTTA .
スマッタ：フォン・バメル殿、水夫、それと巨きな熊。
ペッパーコール：ほほう、嗅ぎつけたぞ！連れてこい。（スマッタ退場）
あなたは幕の後へ。（ヴァンダーデッケン退場）
ルーシー、この熊がお前の情夫だな。
ルーシー：何のことやら。
Smut . Anoder Von Bummel , sailor ; and large bear .
Pep . O ho ! I smoke the plot . Shew them up ; (exit Smutta) and you go behind the screen . (Vanderdecken retires) Lucy , I know this bear's your lover .
Lucy . Laud , sir !
水夫に扮したモウドリイ登場
Enter MOWDNEY , as Sailor .
モウドリイ：お伺いします、閣下。貧しい船乗りだ。よく見てくだされ、このクマ全く無害。業務の最初は、フォン・バメル氏を港にご案内。
Mor . Sarvice , your honor- poor seaman - please to see the bear - quite harmless . I first does my duty by piloting into port Mynheer Von Bummer .
ピーター登場
Enter PETER .
ピーター：手紙を失くしてしまったから、これでは… 僕は、まるで…一オランダ人じゃないか。
( ペッパーコールに )ヨーヨー！オーランダー語話す、ミンヒアー…うわっ！
ペッパーコール：いや、吾友には似てないな。どちらかと言うと（絵を見る）なんてこった、あのオランダ人にそっくりだ。
ピーター：いや冗談は顔だけに、老君トンガラシ。
ペッパーコール：誰がトンガラシだゴルァ(# ゜Д゜)！いや、落ち着こう…座れ、友よ。ともあれ熊公は、芸でもさせろ。俺は何か、さっぱりしたものでも注文する…トンガラシかよ、畜生（退場）
モウドリイ：レステレ！
レステレ：モウドリイ！…幕の後に、フォン・バメルが。
Pet . I suppose , as I've lost my letter , I - a little Dutch . ( to Peppercoal ) Yaw , yaw ! spriggens a Dootch , mynheer - ugh !
Pep . He's no more like my old friend than- (looking at picture) D - n me ! but he's very like the Dutchman .
Pet . None of your jokes , old hatchet face .
Pep . Hatchet face ! but I'll settle them . Sit down , friends - let Bruin show his antics , by all means . I'll order refreshments , and - hatchet face , eh : ( exit )
Mow. Lestelle !
Lest . Mowdrey ! -behind the screen_Von Bummel .
2人は幕を開くが、ヴァンダーデッケンはもう居ない。
They pull down screen , Vanderdecken is gone .
熊に扮したヴァーニッシュ登場、ルーシーへ向かい、彼女は身構える。
Enter VARNISH as bear , goes to Lucy , she faints .
ヴァーニッシュ：何やってんだ、俺は！…被り物をしてたんだ、（熊の頭を外して机に置いて）ほらヴァーニッシュだよ、ルーシー。
Var . What the deuce have I done ! -- forgot my head , ( placing the bear's head on table ) 'Tis Varnish , Lucy .
皆あたふたするうち、ペッパーコール爺さんが窓を開け、熊面を抛り出す… べしゃ。
While they are all busy , old Peppercoal opens window and takes away the head - Noise .
ハイロー！あれはどこ行った？お面失くしちまった、どうしよう！［幕後に隠れる
Hillo ! where's my head ? -- I've lost my head ! Oh !
[ runs bedind screen .
女性陣退場、熊面抱えてペッパーコール登場、続いて棍棒かまえた奴隷陣。ピーターとモウドリイは打ちのめされ、ヴァーニッシュが物陰から引きずり出され。
Exit ladies , as Peppercoal enters with bear's head , followed by Slaves with cudgels . Peter and Mondrey beaten off - Varnish dragged from behind screen ,
ペッパーコール：悪党め、筋書きを吐け。
ヴァーニッシュ：適当こいて解放願うとするか。
(傍白)筋書きか！そうだな、主人が今夜ここに来る。オランダ人に化けて姪御を運ぼうと。
ペッパーコール：奴が！では、お前が人質だ。
スマッタ：ワインセラに繋ぐよい、だ那。
ヴァーニッシュ：けっ、麗しき胡椒入れが！
ペッパーコール：あの減らず口をチャックしてやれ。
［全員喧嘩
Pep . Rascal ! confess the plot .
Var . I'll tell a lie , then he'll let me go . (aside) Plot ! yes -- my master is coming here tonight , disguised as the Flying Dutchman , to carry niece .
Pep . Is he ! - then you become his security .
Smut . Lock him in wine cellar , massa .
Var . Sweet Peppercoal !
Pep . Stop his mouth with - saw - dust .
［They all fight off.
BALLAD:アリア『ゼンタのバラード』とは歌詞が異なり、音楽も譜面が散逸して不明ながら。何故イギリスで流行ったバラッドが、ドイツ人作曲家のオペラの中心に据えられたのか、理由が判った気がする。
Come , you dog ! :ペッパーコールが（ピーターだと思い込まされた）ヴァンダーデッケンを娘に引き合わせる。この dog は、男性に対して親しみを込めた呼びかけである一方、「不細工」を意味する事も。
Yaw , yaw !:以下、オランダ人なふりをして胡麻化すピーター。
hatchet face:「尖った顔」と煽る、そのエモーショナルな意味は不明。ペッパーコールの反応からして、当時の流行り物があったのではないか。
