第3場 船の甲板、貨物やら何やら。SCENE 3 . A Ship’s Deck , set with Luggage , &c .
トム・ウィリスと水夫たちが見張る。
Tom Willis and Sailors on the look out .
トム：ヨーホー！船は進むぜ、陸！やーい！
乗組員：やーい！陸よ！
Tom . Yo ho ! steady she goes ! -Land ! huzza !
Crew . Huzza ! land !
青ざめ元気のないピーター・フォン・バメル、スウィグスに連れられてくる。
Peter Von Bummel runs in pale and languid , followed by Swiggs .
ピーター：陸！どこだ、水夫殿？僕は具合悪いんだ。
トム：いや、まだ見つからん。言ってもいいか？水ばっかりだ！ついでに雲が湧いて、ありゃ嵐になるぞ。
ピーター：陸ないって！本を詰めとかないと。弁護士なんだ僕！なあ、顔色悪いの解るだろ？言わなかったかな、船酔いする質なんだ。航海の間ずっと、僕は… おろおろおろ［船縁に駆け出す
トム：こんな霞んだ天気にこんだけ暗いと来ては、船首から1縺も見えやせん。もうじき嵐だな、ヨーホー！其許は「さまよえるオランダ人」をご存じないので？
ピーター：さあ？横たわるオランダ人ならともかく。
［だらりと横たわる
トム：いや真面目に、本物のさまよえるオランダ人、ヴァンダーデッケンのことだ、その船は常に風に逆らって走っている。
ピーター：言うにや及ぶ。汽船でマーゲートに行ったとき、僕も同じようなことをやったが？
トム：これは汽船ではなく、正直な男の船に手紙を持ってくる妖怪だ。しかし、そんなものを受け取っても、良いことはない。その重さは、これまで航海してきた最も頑丈なオーク材の船すら沈めてしまうほどだ。
スウィグス：本当ですとも。
ピーター：けっ、このズラ載せマネキンが。…うぐ？これは堪らん！[貨物にへばりつく、嵐に呑まれる
トム.向こうに灯りが！羅針箱の灯りだ！誰か船外に落ちて溺れているぞ、ロープ、ロープ！
Pet . Land ! where , Mr. Sailor ! Oh ! I'm so sick .
Tom . No , now I can't diskiver it ; blow me if I can ! nothing but water ! and the clouds rising shall get a storm .
Pet . No land ! Bag my books , I'm a lawyer ! Don't think I'm to be bad . Don't I tell you I'm sea sick ? -been so the whole voyage . I-O-h ! [ runs to Vessel's side .
Tom . The weather's got so hazy and so dark , one can scarcely see a cable's length from the bows Hawl taught ! -we shall have a storm . Yo ho ! Did your honor never hear of the Flying Dutchman ?
Pet . No - but I've heard of the lying Dutchman.［lies doron .
Tom . I means the real arnest Flying Dutchman , Vanderdecken , whose vessel drives constantly against the wind .
Pet . Well ! that's nothing to brag about , you know . Didn't I do the same thing when I went to Margate in the steamer ?
Tom . This is no steamer , but a happerition , who brings letters aboard of honest men's ships ; but no good comes to them as has to do with such despatches ; the weight on ' em is enough to sink the stoutest bit of oak as ever sailed .
Swiggs . Dat ish all true .
Pet . Yaw , yaw ! you old wigblock ! you — o - h ! I'm so ill . [ Sits on luggage , storm encrudes .
Tom . Lights there ! lights in the binnacle ! A drowning man overboard ! A rope - a rope !
音楽：船外に放り出されたヴァンダーデッケン。くたくたになった様子。
Music - Vanderdecken is hawled aboard : he appears exhausted .
ほらよ、飲め（酒瓶渡し）
天は汝を助けたまえり、哀れなる者よ！
Drink there ! ( gives flask ) Heaven help thee , decken the de Pute poor fellow !
音楽：天の名に於て、酒瓶取り落とすヴァンダーデッケン。持ち直すや、手紙の束を渡そうとして。トム及び乗組員拒絶。
Music - At the word Heaven , Vanderdecken drops flask, recovers , and offers letters - Tom and Crew refuse them .
いやいや、俺たちゃ古参でな。お前の居場所なんざここにゃねえよ。お前のお友達は皆、落ち着く所に入ってんだよ、もう長いこと。
No , no , we are old cruizers ; you gets no quarters here : your friends be all stowed in their last hold long ' ere this .
音楽- ヴァンダーデッケンは、青いリボンで結ばれた手紙を取り上げキスし、指さすや、これを検めろと言わんばかりに振り回し、その答えを求める。
Music- Vanderdecken takes a letter tied with a blue ribbon , kisses it , points to direction , offers it wildly for inspection , then offers its answer.
ふむ、何々。「レステレ・ヴェンへレム嬢へ、スタンケンのヨット埠頭、アムステルダム。」俺の知る所では、その通りは60年前に潰されて、今じゃでっかい教会1つきりなんだが。
Yes , I see ; -- " To Miss Lestelle Vanhelm , Stancen Yacht Quay , Amsterdam . ” To my knowledge , that street was pulled down sixty years since : -a large church now stands in its place .
ピーター：レステレ・ヴェンへレム嬢だって？だったらそれは、僕の妻だ！何なら見てみろ、ここに僕の手紙の書き出しがある…ほら。
Pet . Miss Lestelle Vanhelm ! that's my wife , as is to be . Ah ! you may stare , but here's my letter of introduction -look at it .
ヴァンダーデッケンはその手紙を引ったくって隠してしまい、自分のものと交換を求める。
Vanderdecken snatches letter , conceals it , and offers his own in exchange .
トム：（ピーターを遮り）何してくれてんだてめえは！その紙切れに触れたが最後、鉄砲玉並みにデイヴィ・ジョーンズの監獄行きだぞ。
ピーター：いや、手紙！僕の手紙が！
Tom . (siezing Peter) What the devil are you about ! Touch one of them bits of paper , and we drop into Davy Jones's locker like a shot .
Pet . My letter ! my letter !
音楽：いよいよ嵩にかかったヴァンダーデッケンが手紙を押し付けようとするも、全員拒否。と見るや、それを甲板に投げ込み、ピーターが取ろうとするも、風に吹かれて海に散る。
Music - Vanderdecken offers his letter more wildly , all refuse — he throws it on deck , Peter attempts to take it , and it is blown into the sea.
トム：何だってんだ、こりゃ？悪魔が！奴を船から追ん出せ！
…いや掴まえろ！
…くそ、ちょこまかと。撃て！
Tom . What is all this ? the demon ! Drive him from the ship ! -sieze him ! -he eludes us ! fire !
音楽：水夫の一人はヴァンダーデッケンを捕えようとするも、すり抜けてしまう。落ちていく敵を水兵が撃ち、…と思ったら、ヴァンダーデッケンが波間に顔出し、幽霊船の姿が絵に現れる。
Music - A Sailor attempts to sieze Vanderdecken , he vanishes , and the Marines shoot the Sailor , who falls — Vanderdecken rises on the waves , and the Phantom Ship appears— Picture .

your friends be all stowed in their last hold long ' ere this . :この hold は船室を指し、同時に「墓に入ってろ」とも言っている。
Davy Jones's locker:「デイヴィ・ジョーンズの監獄」とは海底を指し、そこに送られるとは溺死を意味する。但し海の悪魔デイヴィ・ジョーンズについては由来不明。
