Let not young souls be smothered out before

They do quaint deeds and fully flaunt their pride.

It is the world’s one crime its babes grow dull,

Its poor are ox-like, limp and leaden-eyed.

Not that they starve, but starve so dreamlessly,

Not that they sow, but that they seldom reap,

Not that they serve, but have no gods to serve,

Not that they die, but that they die like sheep.

彼らは古風な真似をして彼らの倨傲をはためかす。

その世界は無二の犯罪であり、その赤子たちを鈍くする。

その世の貧者は畜牛のよう、力ない疲れた目をする。

彼らは飢えるのではなく、夢もなく飢えるのだ。

彼らが種を撒かないのは、収穫があるからではない。

彼らは奉仕しないのではなく、奉仕する神もないのだ。

彼らは死ぬのではなく、羊のように死ぬのだ。
