7. Chaos

Medical condition of Kate was getting worse and worse. Her blond hair fell off completely and she wore a ski cap instead. Due to the progressing necrosis the color of her skin changed to dark in some area.

“Yesterday I vomited blood a little.”

The cellular necrosis had damaged her stomach mucosa. Though the painkiller was still effective, horrible pains would strike all over her body sooner or later. Nobody knew when, where and how.

“Very sorry. It’s my fault.”

“Don’t say that. Just I was unlucky.”

“But if I didn’t suppose that experiment, then…”

“Yes, you did. It’s a right choice at that time. Therefore our theory was proved. The next Novel Prize will be ours.”

Kate pretended cheerfully, but deep sadness was seen in her eyes expecting the worst result. A few conversation with Kohei was the only relief for her.

But it was the next day that Kohei received a personnel reassignment notice. He was selected as a member for Japanese nuclear shelter.

“Then you would never go back to Japan. Why? Is there any reason…”

The meeting with the Japanese Chief Research Officer had been continuing. Kohei refused the reassignment many times.

“I think there is nothing to do here anymore. If you stay, you will definitely die. Is that OK?”

“Yes, I will never change my mind.”

During the discussion Kohei felt his deep love to Kate. Without Kate it would be meaningless for him to survive.

The next day.

An unexpected affair had arisen from overseas. It was USA again. The President of USA suddenly revealed the current situation. American was not satisfied with being kicked out of CERN. An emergency declaration was issued from the White House.

“I must say that we are now facing the big crisis of human race. Black Hole which was produced during the experiment at CERN will gulp everything of this world. I would like to ask all of you to abandon selfishness and show your braves of self-sacrifice. Please act deliberately. Do not fear anything. Fear will arise the confusion. The God will give all of you awards for your precious actions. I promise the United State will always be with you.”

The USA government proclaimed the martial law and military forces were dispatched to all the corners of every town.

This news was spread to the EU all at once. The EU countries which intended to proceed the preparation confidentially were totally fallen into panic. They declared the emergency call immediately but failed. People ran about in confusion throughout countries. All kinds of violence occurred. Burglars, set-fires, murders…. The law became meaningless and the crime was not punished. Money lost the value. People could do anything as they liked. Thus the modern constitutional states were easily collapsed.

“Damn, stupid”

Dr. Holmstein clicked his tongue looking at this disorder.

A human was week and sinful after all. The lucky tickets for nuclear shelters would be less than 100 thousands all over the world. Further more highly scientific knowledge was required. Who could pass such narrow examination? There was a rumor on the website a private shelter was sold for the billionaire. Many of ordinary citizens began to move away by cars as far as possible but failed due to heavy traffic jams.

“Kohei, it is time to say goodbye.”

“What do you mean by that? Kate.”

“I have heard Japanese delegations will depart tomorrow.”

“I won’t go. I would rather stay here with you.”

“Don’t worry about me. Anyhow my life won’t be so long. Please get the Nobel Prize even for myself.”

“I will stay here, because everything will be over soon.”

“Over? What do you mean?”

Kohei handed a piece of paper. Kate looked into it. It was a familiar analysis diagram of the calorimeter. According to the recorded time it showed the last moment of their experiment.

“Look at the upside left.”

Kate deliberately inspected the diagram.

“Well, is this an interference fringe?”

“Yes, I found it when I rechecked the diagram.”

An interference fringe is usually observed when two lights coming from different directions are doubled. It is the proof that the light is transmitted as a wave. Similarly the gravity is also transmitted as a wave, so called “Gravitational Wave”. The interference fringe was the very proof that gravitational waves had come from two directions. The strong gravity of Black Hole made it possible to amplify those waves..

“That’s another great discovery. It would be worthy to one more Nobel Prize. Kohei, you are really amazing.”

Kate smiled cheerfully. But Kohei looked a little gloomy.

“One of waves came from our space and the other came from Extra Dimension. If my calculation is correct, the scale of Parallel Universe may be larger than a galaxy size.”

“What?”

Kate froze. Even if the size was same as a baseball, it would be enough to make the earth ruined. Then what would happen if it was a galaxy size? That meant the growth of Black Hole would not stop until all the matters in the Milky Way Galaxy would be offset by anti-matters in the neighbor galaxy.

“Is that true? Is your calculation correct? Have you already informed Dr. Holmstein of this?”

“No, I‘m not still confident. But even if I inform somebody, nobody won’t believe.”

“Well, in case you are correct, how long will the earth hold on?”

“I am not sure. But it can be one month or…, 3 months at best.”

At this moment Kate understood the meaning of “Over”.

Suddenly the loud emergency alarm was echoed throughout CERN.

“Emergency Warning, Level 5. Extraordinary energy level in D Factory. All the staffs should evacuate immediately. Repeating…”

At the heliport of CERN.

The last fright was now departing.

“Mr. Kohei. Hurry up. Get on the helicopter with us.”

Dr. Michel shouted. But Kohei would not move and shake his head. .

“Mr. Kohei. Will you really stay here? Is that OK?”

Dr. Holmstein who was standing by Kohei confirmed again.

“Yes, I will.”

At last the helicopter fried up and gradually went away. Dr. Holmstein, Kohei and several other researchers were standing at the heliport for a while.

“Dr. Holmstein, would you do me a favor? I would like to borrow one working vehicle.”

“It’s no problem. Anyhow everything here will be swallowed by that monster soon. Then what will you do by that?”

“It’s Kate. I would like to bring her to Dover, her birth place.”

“Oh, it’s a nice idea. The journey is really suitable for your Honeymoon.”

Dr. Holmstein grinned. He had already knew that Kohei and Kate hold a simple wedding ceremony at the small chapel in CERN. Kohei started the preparation soon. He loaded some foods, water, medicines and oxygen tanks.

“Kohei, hurry up. You will not have so much time.”

Kohei held Kate firmly in his arms and laid her down in the vehicle.

“Dr. Holmstein, it is time to say goodbye.”

“Kohei, I want to say thank you for your great contribution as one of physicists. You gave me a wonderful dream at the last moment of my life. May the God blessing be on both of you.”

The working vehicle was moving slowly. Its speed was only 30 kilometers an hour because of its thick iron body which can shield strong radioactivity and extreme high temperature. Kohei chose this heavy metal vehicle, expecting the destructive event occurring soon.
