2. Emerging

D Factory, CERN

“Raise the power much stronger.”

Howard’s shout was echoed in the monitoring room. The PC monitor screen projected colorful visions like a kaleidoscope. It was the energy trace scanned by a calorimeter.

The LHC can accelerate protons by 99 percent of the light speed and make them collision with each other. Of course we cannot observe such small scale directly. Instead a calorimeter detects the energy trace created by the collision.

“It’s impossible. Too dangerous.”

Steven, an assistant of Howard, shouted.

Howard Smith, who was the chief research officer of the Institute of Particle Physics of Harvard University, participated in CERN with leading more than 100 researchers. He felt a big pressure for their research at CERN, because it had been long time since USA got the Nobel Prize in Physics before.

His specialized field was the Super Gravity Theory, the most advanced area in the Super String Theory, which was expected to give a clear answer to the biggest mystery of cosmophysics namely “Hierarchy Problem”. Among four physical forces, Strong Force, Weak Force, Electromagnetic Force and Gravity, only the gravity is far smaller than other three. The only way to answer this question would be to probe beyond the Event Horizon of Black Hole. Theoretically inside Black Hole the gravity becomes infinitely large at the Singularity.

It was prospected that the artificial Black Hole would be produced by the proton collision experiment at CERN. If we actually succeed in such result, we can observe the collapse of Black Hole just under our noses and study detail characters of it. .

“Raise the power to 9 Tev (Tera electron volt). This experiment equipment is designed with 30 percentage of allowance. Then we can proceed to approximately maximum about 12 Tev”

Howard shouted again and Steven unwillingly followed.

One month later. At the cafeteria.

Outside windows short summer of Switzerland had already been close to the end and autumn was creeping in. Kohei had concentrated on writing in his notebook since morning for hours. A vacant coffee cup showed the length of passing time. Kate called his name a little irritating.

“Kohei, Hey, Kohei.”

“Wait, wait a moment. A little more.”

Kohei had devoted himself to some calculations since that event at the Sild See. He had sometimes been absent from the laboratory and shut himself in his own room. What was he doing? Though it was not rare for many theoretical physicists, Kate could not wait any longer at this moment.

“Kohei, Ko…”

“That’s finished. I did it. It completed.”

Kohei shouted suddenly and tore the last page of his notebook. Kate found one equation scrawled on the paper.

“Kohei, what is this?”

“Extra Dimension. Yes, extra dimension. Do you remember the event at the Sild See. When a waterfowl dived into water, its form completely disappeared from our sight.”

Kate nodded calmly.

“But a waterfowl did not actually disappear. It was just hidden under water, not erased. It’s same for an anti-matter. An anti-matter did not disappear but it was only isolated in Extra Dimension. It may be possible that “Parallel Universe”, which is totally made of only anti-matters, is existing in Extra Dimension.”

Kohei kept going at a breath.

“That means the Symmetry was not broken.”

“No, it wasn’t. It looked like being broken but actually keeping. Just matters and anti-matters were separated. Dark Energy is the very proof of isolated anti-matters. As you know only the energy can seep out from Extra Dimension.”

“G, great. If it’s true, the world of physics will be upset. But is there something…”

Kate didn’t easily agree to his assumption. She was also one of major theoretical physicists. It was not seldom in physics that the bigger a discovery was, the more suspected it was.

“Yes, yes. Therefore I ask you for the review of my calculations, the most severe one.”

“OK, I will do it soon.”

“Sorry, it’s still messy. I will summarize and pass you tomorrow. By the way, what is your problem?”

Kohei finally looked at Kate’s face seriously.

“Yes, 2 days ago D Factory was closed.”

“What? Closed?”

“Yah, the official announce says there was some malfunction in the beaming device. But members of the American team is still admitted to access. Further the entrance is guarded by securities.”

“Securities? It’s not usual. Strange. Is there something wrong?”

Kate raised her hands with disappointed expression.

“How about the Home Page of USA?”

“It has not been updated since last week.”

Kohei felt a faint bad feeling, remembering his worst idea.

Around the same time, D Factory.

“Strange. It does not disappear. What’s going on?”

Howard looked into the monitor screen and tapped the keypad. His shaggy beard and untrimmed hair told the length of passing time.

During several weeks of Kohei’s absence, the American team had already achieved the amazing discovery, an artificial Black Hole. It came out when they raised the beam power at 11 Tev. It had surely evaporated as quickly as it emerged, as many physicists had prospected. The scale of Black Hole was the minus 30 power of 10 meters and its lifespan was only the minus 35 power of 10 seconds. The calorimeter could narrowly detect its creation and termination as the energy flows.

The American team did not open this achievement soon and continued their experiment to get more solid confirmation. But this caused the fatal mistake. One of Black Holes did not disappear and was gradually growing up to the scale of minus 28 power of 10 meters within only 2 weeks. Such result was really unexpected one, but according to the Kohei’s new theory such case could be likely to happen.

“Howard, give up. It seems useless to continue any more. We should rather report to the Committee.”

“Never, the scale is still minus 28 power of 10 meters. Nobody can find it if we keep it secret. The US government also directed us to make it confidential at the moment. Now the priority is how we can terminate it. Let’s try again with raising the beam power.”

One week later.

A big alarm echoed throughout CERN.

“Emergency Warning, Emergency Warning, Radiation leaking in D Factory. Repeating radiation…”

Bad event cannot be hidden.

Black Hole emited the strong X-ray to the vertical direction from its accretion disk. Inside Black Hole both matters and anti-matters were expected to be annihilated and exchanged into energy. Such energy would be very enormous and burst out the X-ray jet. Actually at the center of galaxy a super large scale Black Hole is existing and the strong gamma ray is emitted which can be observed from the earth. Even if Black Hole is very tiny, the X-ray can be emitted likewise.

D Factory was temporarily closed for the investigation. According to CERN’s regulation, when an accident occurs the LHC must be stopped and the investigation must be done even if the accident is trivial.

3 days later.

“Why didn’t you report soon? What kind of experiment have you done at D Factory?”

Severe questions were uttered by the Investigation Committee member. The Investigation Committee was urgently established in case of the serious violation of rules or the significant accident etc. It would be necessarily to confirm the peaceful utilization of CERN. The Committee is given the strong authority which cannot be intervened even by the participant government.

“Do you still keep silence?”

Both Howard and Steven had stated no words for hours. They were just obedient to the USA Government’s directions. It was obvious that there was some kind of intervenes by the Pentagon for their experiment.

“OK, you may go. We will do the on-site inspection tomorrow.”

The next day. D Factory.

Ten members of the Committee prepared to step into “the Radiation Hazard Area”. Every member wore the protective clothing like a space suit with a shield helmet. They cautiously entered the room step by step. Inside the room it seemed very calm rather than expected. There seemed to be no fire nor explosion. Only quiet atmosphere was expanded.

One member who brought the radioactivity detector proceeded at the head of other members through several desks. Still no sign. They moved ahead further and approached to the monitoring site.

Suddenly Beeping.

“Radioactive Level 2”

All at once everyone was frozen in astonishment. But Level 2 was not critical with a protective clothing. Some of them sighed with relief.

The chief of members slowly turned on the monitor screen. Soon later the familiar kaleidoscope like view was projected.

“What is this?”

“Is that an artificial Black Hole?”

“Impossible”

The Calorimeter indicated 40 Tev which was more than 3 times as strong as the designed maximum.
