Anza
She is locked in a mid-dance battle with another girl whose feet move like magic on the beat.
Ah, shuffling!
Her steps flash back and forth—a flawless motion. It is a mesmerizing optical illusion, her heels and toes switching so fast she looks like she is gliding effortlessly across the floorboards while her hair whips through the air.
Asuka frantically tries to keep pace, but her movements drag slower and slower.
“Go, Asuka! Go, go, go!” I cheer, waving my arms.
Shun
“Stop, stop, stop, stop. What do you think you’re doing, Shun? Riku halts me with a palm flat against my chest. Why are you bringing civilians into the back?”
“Civilians,” I scoff, brushing his hand off me. “We’re all students here, Riku.”
“The Chief will make this place a crime scene if she catches you breaking the rules again.”
“Yeah yeah, I know.” I step in front of him, spreading my arms out to clear the path for Jiro.
“Besides,” I glance over my shoulder, shooting a wink and a tongue-click to Riku, “he’s my witness.”
Jiro
Witness—more like victim.
“Here, here!” Shun points toward a workspace. “Take a seat. This is the desk of the big boss man.”
“The Chief’s?” I take a step back.
“Nooo, the bigger boss! Me.”
“I think I’ll take this seat instead.” I drop into the chair before his desk, scanning the room over my shoulder.
The back office holds about a dozen people. Staff members sit huddled behind their desks, immersed in their own screens and paperwork.
At the end of the central walkway, a velvet-lined lectern showcases a thick leather-bound volume under a direct spotlight.
“What’s the deal with that book over there?” I point toward the spotlight.
“Ah, that’s the Club Diary.” Shun tosses his jacket over the back of his chair.
“Like for daily logs or something?”
“No, no, we have digital logs for that. It’s a book that each club on campus has. Members write down their experiences for the next generation to learn from. It has things like gossip, personal experiences and highly sensitive trade secrets.”
I lock eyes with him. He returns the stare.
Longer more, we look silently at each other, the tapping of the keyboards only intervening in between.
“Wee-eelll,” he draws out the word, tapping his chin. “Ordinarily, it’s strictly for club members. But I guess...” His expression snaps up with excitement. “Heck, why not? Absolutely—”
Sayoko
“—not!” The bank clerk thrusts a hand between me and the glass display case housing the lectern, wearing a defensive look.
He straightens his tie and clears his throat. “Besides, this is just a display model. We keep the real volume in a high-security vault. But the point remains the same.”
He turns and continues down the hall.
He straightens his tie and clears his throat. “Besides, this is just a display model. We keep the real volume in a high-security vault. But the point remains the same.” He turns and continues down the hall.
“Just an empty husk for show...” I murmur.
My open umbrella fabric brushes past the display case as I follow close on his heels.
“This way.” He turns a corner. “This is our private lounge, reserved strictly for our most esteemed customers.”
He offers a dramatic bow, gesturing toward the open doorway.
Click.
“I feel special already…”
Jiro
I step up to the display, staring down at the thick volume. “So what kind of special things can we find in here exactly?” I ask, looking over at him. “Like manuals to tools or something?”
He scoffs. “Don’t be so dry! This book contains the very soul of the club. You can’t just write that down in a manual. Well... I guess you can write it down.” He leans in, dropping his voice to a conspiratorial whisper. “And technically, there is a digital backup on the mainframe... But still!”
I flip the cover open and let my thumb fan through the edges, watching pages of columns and dates blur past before I let it snap back to the beginning.
‘Generation 1’ is stamped across the header of the very first leaf.
“What does generation refer to? Like the first year of the school?” My finger hovers over the text.
“Exactly!” He snaps his fingers with a smug grin. “We keep the term ‘years’ for us actual students, so we can easily tell the fresh meat apart from the better years.” He clicks his tongue.
“Right...” I track my finger down the page, refocusing on the ink.
[Generation: One Function:
Rank: Chief
Student: Hiroshi
As the first Chief of the OPB, I am honored to be the first one to write into this book of knowledge. In my function—]
“Oh, Chief Hiroshi,” Shun murmurs, leaning over my shoulder. “Haven’t seen his name in a while. Word has it he was one of the strictest leaders, though I guess people forgot to add our current Chief.”
I grab a chunk of the volume and let a couple dozen pages fall over at once, skipping ahead.
[Generation: Three Function
Rank: Captain

...The Soggy Sardines have been making a mockery of my department for weeks. My workforce is totally spent, staying up past midnight just to find a shred of evidence linking those greaseballs to the largest whipped cream heist this campus has ever seen. I tried the usual textbook tactics, but for this case, I had to think outside the box... So I grabbed a round—]
“Ah!” Shun snaps his fingers. “I worked on that case too. Tough nut to crack. The secret lay in the pudding—literally.” He throws his arms up, mimicking an explosion.
My thumb digs deeper into the edge, turning more of the parchment.
[Generation: Four Function
Rank: Commander
Name: Vali
I don’t really have a grand case to report here, or tricks that aren’t already boring public knowledge, sorry to disappoint. But hey, maybe I can still give you a piece of my mind. This whole setup is supposed to be a stream of information meant for the next generation after all. I suppose you could call this my future current for you. Let me tell you about the most horrifying event that I witnessed on this island—]

Author’s note:
Ten chapters and over thirty thousand words published—the series has reached a great milestone in a short time.
Milestones are a good moment to pause, look back at how far the story has come, and glimpse what lies ahead. By now, you likely have a solid feel for this world, the dynamics that move within it, and where the narrative could be heading.
Can you already picture what an anime opening sequence for this series would look like? Imagine Jiro gliding around the fountain on electronic skates, only to have to duck under Sayoko opening her umbrella wide just as the background drums begin to roll in.
Writing from multiple perspectives has proven challenging, but it remains a powerful tool for expanding this world in a more intimate way. You could have noticed that visual descriptions have been deliberately left sparse so far. These will eventually be woven into both past and future chapters when there is decisive vision for them. Names for characters, clubs, and other elements are also tentative and may change as earlier chapters are refined, particularly for supporting characters.
Looking ahead, the story is only on day two of the new school year and the bell has not even rung. Expect to dive much deeper into this world by meeting students from different years and groups, exploring unique locations across the campus, and watching the plot expand into several main story lines. The collective stories are projected to comfortably exceed one hundred chapters, though the pace remains based on interest of everyone in the series.
You may also notice that this chapter is roughly twice the length of a standard one. This longer format and style will likely become the norm for turning points in the plot.
As a teaser, can you extrapolate what these draft chapter titles—listed in no particular order—could be about?
“Both Righteously Wrong”
“Your Absent Presence”
“Silent Click”
Keep enjoying the story from here on out as the world expands and the plot thickens.
